Newly married couple dies as car hits their two-wheeler in Baramulla

A newly married couple died in a road accident in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir Friday when their motorcycle was hit by a car, police said. Muzaffar Ahmad Khan and his wife died on the spot after their motorcycle was hit by a car at Tapper in Pattan area of the district, a police official said. The couple got married last week. Police said they are looking into the case.

AP seeks Rs 1401 Cr assistance to take up drought relief works

The Andhra Pradesh government Friday appealed to the Centre to immediately release Rs 1401.54 crore as financial assistance for drought mitigation measures in the state. As many as 347 mandals spread over nine districts have been declared drought-hit because of 34.8 per cent deficit in rainfall during the Kharif season, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu told a central delegation during a meeting at the state Secretariat. The Rabi crop season too experienced a 55 per cent rainfall deficiency even as the state was hit by drought for the seventh year in a row, the chief minister told the inter-ministerial team that came to study the drought situation. The ten-member team, led by Neeraja Adidan, joint secretary in the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperation, toured Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore, Prakasam, Kadapa, Chittoor, Kurnool and Anantapuramu districts and inspected crops damaged due to drought. Haryana policeman killed in road accident

A Haryana police constable driving a highway pilot vehicle was killed and two of his colleagues injured on Friday when their vehicle was hit by a canter truck near Pehowa near here, police said. The accident took place on the Pehowa-Kaithal road when the pilot vehicle collided with the canter coming from the wrong side, police said. Pawan, the driver of the police vehicle, died on the spot while Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Jai Pal and Constable Madan were injured, police said. The two injured were rushed to a nearby hospital from where Madan was referred to Chandigarh for treatment.

Mahindra Marazzo gets 4-star adult safety rating from Global NCAP

Utility vehicles major Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) Friday said its recently launched multi-purpose vehicle Marazzo has received four-star rating by Global NCAP for adult occupation protection. The Marazzo, which comes with standard double airbags, ABS, seatbelt reminders (SBR) for driver and ISOFIX anchorages, achieved the four-star rating form Global NCAP, an internationally renowned safety accreditation body. As per the crash test results, the model offered good protection for both adult head and neck, marginal protection for the driver chest and adequate protection for passenger chest, M&M said in a statement. JK govt to conduct survey on needs of women and children during disaster

The Jammu and Kashmir administration will conduct a survey to understand the needs of women and children during natural disasters in the state and help in creating a realistic emergency response plan, an official said Friday. State Disaster Management Director Aamir Ali said a capacity gap analysis will help it understand what is needed to focus on the needs and vulnerabilities of women and children during such accidents. The risk profiling will also aid the administration build its capacity, particularly in social sectors to reduce, vulnerability of people during and after any natural disaster, he added. Ali also said while most sections get affected during a disaster, those vulnerable feel a greater impact. Various departments associated with disaster management will be given assistance to outline their strategy and plans to respond to identified humanitarian emergencies affecting children and women, he said. Nexon gets 5-star adult safety rating in Global NCAP test

Tata Motors Friday said its compact SUV Nexon has received the highest 5-star adult safety rating by Global NCAP, an internationally renowned safety accreditation body. The company also said Nexon achieved a 3-star rating for child occupant safety. The Nexon's structural integrity and overall safety have been evaluated in Global NCAP crash test. The vehicle was tested for both front and side impacts, Tata Motors said in a statement. The combined evaluation of both the tests by Global NCAP has resulted in a full 5-star rating, the highest adult occupant safety score of (16.06/17.00), it said. 'Construction sector may need 2.5 lakh drone operators soon'

The construction sector is the fastest-growing adopter of commercial drones, and is likely to require 2.5 lakh people with UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) operating skills in the coming years, a report said. Probe ordered into Talcher land subsidence incidents

Union Coal Minister Piyush Goyal Friday ordered a probe into the incidents of land subsidence reported from two houses in Talcher town in Odisha. Angry residents of Talcher in Odisha's Angul district on Thursday had observed a 12-hour bandh over the issue. Goyal ordered a fact finding inquiry by a team of experts following a request from Union Petroleum and Natural Gas minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Road accident deaths swell to 1.35 million each year: WHO

Road accidents kill someone every 24 seconds, with a total of 1.35 million traffic deaths around the world each year, the World Health Organisation said Friday, demanding global action. The number of fatalities annually has swelled by around 100,000 in just three years, with road accidents now the leading killer of children and young people between the ages of five and 29, the UN health agency said in a new report. "These deaths are an unacceptable price to pay for mobility," WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a statement. "There is no excuse for inaction. This is a problem with proven solutions," he said. The WHO's Global Status Report on Road Safety, based on data from 2016, showed that the situation is worsening. 8 killed in separate accidents in UP

Eight persons were killed in separate accidents in Uttar Pradesh, police said Friday. Five persons were killed after an SUV collided head-on with a truck near Khandauli on Agra-Aligarh road on Thursday evening, they said. Police said three persons died on the spot. One of the injured died on the way to S N Medical College hospital and another succumbed during treatment, they added. The SUV was headed to Agra from Aligarh while the truck, which was loaded with potatoes, was on its way to Hathras. In the second incident, three members of a family were killed when their car hit the road divider and turned turtle, police said. The family hailed from Faizabad and was headed to Ghaziabad.

'To check info vacuum during disasters, Army asks ground operatives to go to media directly'

The Army has instructed its ground operatives working during disasters to go to the media directly whenever there is need, as such occasions lead to an information vacuum that need to be plugged, Defence Ministry spokesperson Colonel Aman Anand said on Thursday. Speaking at a conference on 'Media and Disaster', Anand said that in recent floods in Kerala the ground operatives were allowed to interact with media without prior permission of the higher ups. In case of a disaster, there is an information vacuum and nobody provides information to the media and the leaked information starts taking round, he said. "There is a need to fill this vacuum. During Kerala Floods, the Army had instructed its ground operatives that they needed no permission to interact with media. "During tragedies now, we have taken this decision that ground operatives may go directly to media whenever it is required," Anand said. NDMC panel passes resolution on Signature Bridge accidents

The standing committee of the BJP-led north corporation Thursday passed a resolution seeking "compensation of Rs 1 crore" for each of the families of the persons who have recently died due to accidents on the Signature Bridge here, the civic body said. The North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) in its resolution also alleged that the bridge was "inaugurated without finishing the entire work" leading to accidents. "The Standing Committee resolves that a compensation of Rs 1 crore each for the next of kin of the persons who have died in accidents on Signature Bridge and and Rs 25 lakh each for those who have been injured," the resolution read. A magisterial probe into the Amritsar train tragedy in which around 60 people died, has held the gateman at a nearby railway crossing and the organisers of the Dussehra event responsible for "various acts of omissions and commissions", leading to the incident. The probe report, however, gave a "clean chit" to Navjot Kaur Sidhu, wife of Punjab minister Navjot Singh Sidhu, who was the chief guest at the Dussehra event, saying "she had no role in organising the event".
