Cyclone Vayu continues to move northwards; may intensify in next 12 hours: IMD

Cyclonic Storm 'Vayu', that is likely to hit Gujarat on June 13, continues to move in Northerly direction and will presumably intensify into Severe Cyclonic Storm in next 12 hours, India Meteorological Office (IMD) said on Tuesday."It is very likely to intensify further into a Severe Cyclonic Storm during next 12 hours. It is very likely to move nearly northwards and cross Gujarat coast between Porbandar and Mahuva around Veraval and Diu region as a Severe Cyclonic Storm with a wind speed of 110-120 kmph gusting to 135 kmph during the early morning of June 13," the IMD said in a statement.The cyclone currently lays centred at 350 kms West-Southwest of Goa, 510 kms South-Southwest of Mumbai (Maharashtra) and 650 kms South of Veraval (Gujarat).Jayanta Sarkar, IMD Ahmedabad Director said: "The cyclone is likely to cross the Saurashtra coast as a severe cyclonic storm. More bodies found as Hungary lifts sunken tourist boat from river

Hungarian police recovered more bodies on Tuesday as they lifted a sightseeing boat that sank in the river Danube in Budapest last month in an accident that has claimed at least 24 lives. Police were seen removing another four bodies from the vessel while four people are still missing about two weeks after the tragedy, the worst such incident in Hungary in 75 years. The lifting operation began at around 6 am (0400 GMT) and six hours later the Mermaid tourist boat was almost entirely out of the water. Early on in the operation, police were seen by an AFP photographer at the site removing four bodies from the vessel. Several dozen rescue workers could be seen taking part in the operation, including members of a team sent from South Korea. The Mermaid was carrying mostly South Korean holidaymakers when it capsized and sank on the evening of May 29, just seconds after colliding with a bigger river cruise boat on a busy stretch of the river. As many as 49 people have died in Odisha due to lightning since April 1, said PR Mohapatra, Joint Relief Commissioner, Bhubaneswar."This year we have information about the death of 49 people from April 11 till yesterday due to lightning," Mohapatra told ANI here.He that in 464 people died in the state due to lightning during 2017-18 while the number reduced last year to 318."In 2017-18, 464 people died and last year this reduced to 318 people in Odisha. We are now sending messages to people to be aware of upcoming lightning so that they can save their lives," Mohapatra said.

Fire breaks out at timber factory in Jammu

A massive fire broke out at a timber factory in the Toph Sherkhaniyan area of Jammu city on Tuesday and spread to adjacent areas, officials said. Ten fire tenders were pressed into service, they said. The Fire Department and the armed forces were trying to extinguish the flames even as people in the neighbourhood vacated their houses, the officials said. No loss of life or injury to anyone was reported, they added.

Cyclone Vayu: Amit Shah chairs high-level meeting to review preparedness

Wreckage of AN 32 aircraft found in Arunachal

The wreckage of the AN-32 aircraft of the Indian Air Force was spotted on Tuesday 16 km north of Lipo in Arunachal Pradesh, eight days after it went missing after taking off from Assam's Jorhat. The aircraft had 13 people on board and the IAF said efforts are on to establish the status of the occupants. "The wreckage of the aircraft was spotted today 16 kms north of Lipo, north east of Tato at an approximate elevation of 12,000 ft by the IAF Mi-17 helicopter undertaking search in the expanded search zone," the IAF said in a statement. "Efforts are now continuing to establish the status of occupants and establish survivors. Further details will be communicated as the recovery actions progress," it said. 16 killed due to heavy rains in China

Floods triggered by torrential rains have wreaked havoc in southern China, killing at least 16 people and affecting the lives of 3.60 lakh people, authorities said Tuesday. The floods have toppled or damaged more than 1,300 houses and caused nearly 17,000 residents to evacuate. In Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, week-long downpours triggered floods in six cities and 32 counties in which nine persons were killed and disrupted the lived over 3.60 lakh people, according to the regional emergency management department, state-run Xinhua news agency reported. The regional meteorological bureau issued a yellow alert on Tuesday, forecasting heavy rain to persist for the following 24 hours. China has a four-tier colour-coded weather warning system, with red representing the most severe weather, followed by orange, yellow and blue. Six dead in fire at Ukraine psychiatric hospital

Six people died when fire swept through a psychiatric hospital for war veterans in the Ukrainian city of Odessa, authorities said Tuesday. The fire erupted late Monday evening in the one-storey building, Ukraine's emergency services said in a statement. "Six people died and four have been hospitalised," the statement said. Nine other people escaped unharmed. The facility provided mental health care for veterans of the Soviet Union's 1980s war in Afghanistan and World War II. Police and emergency services did not immediately comment on whether the fire was started deliberately, but said it did not appear to have originated inside the building. Three of family killed in accident in Rajasthan's Sriganganagar

Three of a family were killed when their car collided with a bus head-on in Rajasthan's Sriganganagar district Tuesday, police said. The accident took place near Tattarsar village. The victims was returning Sriganganagar from Padampur after attending a function. They were killed on the spot, Chunawadh SHO Parmeshwar Suthar said. The deceased were identified as Satya Chawla (58), her son Simar Gopal (34) and grandson Saksham (12). The bodies were handed over to family members after a post-mortem examination, he added.

TN govt seeks Rs 5,000 cr central funds for drinking water schemes

The Tamil Nadu government Tuesday requested the Centre for sanctioning over Rs 5,000 crore for various drinking water supply schemes in the state, including a desalination plant for Villupuram district. The plea comes in the backdrop of the state facing an acute water shortage, especially the capital city of Chennai, with water managers resorting to various measures like supply through tankers to manage the situation. S P Velumani, Minister for Municipal Administration, presented a memorandum to Union Minister for Jal Shakti Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, in New Delhi on Tuesday, and sought sanction for projects totalling Rs 5,398 crore. The proposed projects include a desalination plant and connected pipeline works with a capacity of 100 MLD to Villupuram and Tindivanam municipalities and Marakkanam and Vikkaravandi town panchayat, estimated at about Rs 2,000 crore, the memorandum said. 'Mercury-level tops among fish-eaters near coal-fired units'

: People living in a city with active coal-fired power plants and consuming local aquatic produce may have higher body levels of mercury, a study by the Indian Institute of Technology-Hyderabad has revealed. Researchers of the institute said they arrived at this finding after analysing the amount of mercury in the hair of over 600 people in three cities- Hyderabad, Nellore and Vasco da Gama, a press release said here Tuesday. The study has recently been reported in the Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology, a peer-reviewed public health journal, the release said. Mercury, a neurotoxin, is distributed in the environment and present in many products encountered in daily life.
