A catastrophic engine failure on a Southwest Airlines flight from New York to Dallas left one person dead and prompted an emergency landing in Philadelphia today. Southwest flight 1380, a Boeing 737, encountered a problem with the engine shortly after take-off from New York's LaGuardia airport, Robert Sumwalt, chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board, told a news conference. There was one fatality, he confirmed. "We are saying this is an engine failure," Sumwalt said, confirming that parts flew out of the engine, which witnesses said hit a jet window, seriously injuring a woman. Iran's official news agency says a rescue helicopter has crashed in the Persian Gulf, killing at least two people on board. IRNA reported that the helicopter was flying from an offshore rig toward Kish Island yesterday, transporting an oil worker who had suffered a heart attack. It says the oil worker and a paramedic died in the crash. Another two passengers are missing, and the pilot survived. They said that the casualties might go up as many more people were trapped inside the vehicle. Fifteen people are killed and nearly 14 are injured, Sidhi District Collector Dilip Kumar told PTI. The injured were admitted to the district hospital. Expressing deep sorrow over the accident, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced an assistance of Rs 2 lakh each to the kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 each to the injured, the district collector said. A 28-year-old man, who was digging a sewer pit, was killed today after a mound of mud caved in on him, police said. Umar got trapped inside the pit and though he was rescued, he was declared brought dead at a hospital, they said, adding that he died due to suffocation. The other labourers, who were working on top of the pit, escaped as soon as they noticed the mound caving in, they said. Police have registered a case and are probing whether the incident was caused due to someone's negligence. The pit was 10-feet deep and the mud.

?Two garments godowns were today gutted in a major fire in suburban Kurla in Mumbai, a Fire official said. No casualty is reported in the mishap so far and efforts are on to put out the flames. The godowns are located in a ground plus three structure in Gulab Shah market in Kurla (west). Eight fire engines and water tankers have been mobilised to douse the blaze. "Our fire brigade control got information about the blaze in a shop at 9.18 PM, following which fire brigade personnel and fire fighting teams were rushed to the spot," said Mumbai fire brigade chief said P S Rahangdale. He said the fire was confined to the godowns. The exact cause of the blaze cannot be known immediately.
A double storey building was gutted in a fire in Rapadi Bamta village in Rohru subdivision of Shimla district today morning and property worth lakhs of rupees was destroyed, police said. There was no loss of human life in the incident, they added. The fire spread fast and the heavily timbered building with nine rooms was reduced to ashes before the fire brigade could reach. The owner of the house Mangat Ram and Rakesh Kumar ran out to save themselves but the building and other belongings could not be salvaged, police said. The house was stood a little away from the village and fire tenders took time in reaching the spot through a narrow road, an official said. The villagers tried to douse the fire but could not control it as the flames engulfed the house within minutes. The cause fire could not be ascertained but sources said short circuiting could be the reason. A case has been registered and investigations are in progress, police said.

A fire broke out at the Mubarak Mandi Heritage Complex in the heart of the Old Walled City here today, a senior official said. The fire in one of the buildings along the Tawi river was noticed around 10 am and extinguished promptly, Director of Fire and Emergency Services Rajinder Kumar Hak told PTI. Three persons, including the wife of a municipal commissioner, were killed and as many injured in two separate accidents in Rajasthan today, the police said. Shashikant Sharma, the commissioner of Dholpur municipal corporation in Bharatpur district, was on his way to Jaipur with his wife, Seema Sharma (36), and daughter, Navika, said Shrawan Pathak, station house officer (SHO) of Chiksana. Their car crashed after a tyre-burst in Chiksana area of the district. Seema and the car driver, Ghanshayam (25), were killed, while Navika was referred to a Jaipur hospital for treatment, the SHO said. In Nagaur district, an SUV collided head-on with a truck, which was coming from the opposite direction in Parbatsar area. The driver of the car, Munnaram Jat (40), was killed and the truck driver injured, a police official said. The deceased's body was handed over to his family after post-mortem examination. The government has fixed the national highways project award target at 20,000 km for the current fiscal, up 25 per cent over the previous year, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said today. However, the highway construction target for 2018-19 has been pegged at 16,420 km, and per day construction target has been fixed at 45 km for the current fiscal as against last year's about 27 km per day. "The ministry is making all-out efforts for improving and strengthening the highways network in the country. This year, the focus would be more on construction, but the award would be more than last year. There will also be focus on completing the DPRs (detailed project reports) of all the 'in-principle' declared NHs," the road transport and highways minister said.
