32 injured in bus accident

At least 32 persons were injured today in a road accident in Uri area of Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said. A passenger bus skid off the road and overturned in Uri this morning, resulting in injuries to 32 persons, a police official said. He said one person was referred to a hospital here while others were admitted to a local hospital.

J-K: 22 FIRs registered, Rs 4.24 lakh collected from traffic violators in Rajouri

As part of efforts to check violation of traffic rules, the Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri police has registered 22 FIRs and fined 3000 vehicles in the first three months of this year, a senior police officer said today. Fines to the tune of Rs 4.24 lakh were collected during this period, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Rajouri, Yougal Manhas said. Drive is going on in the district to prevent road accidents by taking action against violators of rules as violation becomes the main reason for loss of precious human lives in road accidents, the SSP said. Under the same drive last year, the police claimed to have registered 35 FIRs and imposed fine on 8722 vehicles realising a fine of Rs 9,23,912. According to Manhas, the main focus of the drive is to catch hold those who drive two-wheelers without using crash helmets, drive car without wearing seat belts, and indulge in overloading the passenger buses. Two killed in accident in Odisha

Two persons were killed after two trucks collided head-on in Balasore district, police said today. The incident happened near Soro on NH-16 yesterday, when a brick-laden truck collided with another truck coming from the opposite direction, the police said. Two persons with serious injuries were rushed to a hospital where they were declared brought dead, a police officer said.

Body of last missing Indian family member found in California river

Searchers have found the body of the last missing member of an Indian family which perished when their sport utility vehicle plunged into a swollen river in the US state of California some 11 days ago. The Thottapilly family, from Santa Clarita, disappeared in early April while driving in a Honda Pilot through the Redwood Coast Highway on vacation, officials said. Their disappearance coincided with reports that a vehicle had sunk into the Eel River in Northern California. Searchers yesterday found the body of Siddhant Thottapilly, 12, the last to be found after the family of four went missing. Sandeep Thottapilly, 41, and Saachi Thottapilly, 9, were found dead inside a vehicle encased in sediment in the Eel River, the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office said. Separately, an adult female body recovered on Friday from another area of the river was identified as Soumya Thottapilly, 38. "At approximately 4:00 PM water searchers located the body of a juvenile male submerged in the Eel River .

Two men die after fire in crockery factory

Two men died after a fire broke out in a crockery factory in southwest Delhi's Nawada, said an official from the Delhi Fire Service. A call was received at 10 pm yesterday night about the blaze and 12 fire tenders were rushed to the spot, he said. The fire was doused by 12 am, he added. Two persons were rescued and taken to a hospital where they were declared brought dead, he said. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.

Trade resumes at NCDEX after minor fire

Commodity bourse NCDEX today resumed trading after the system was shut down yesterday due to a minor fire that broke out at its headquarters here. The exchange spokesperson said that live trading resumed at 1000 hours and is facing no problems. The fire was reported in the basement of the NCDEX headquarters at the Akruti Corporate Park on Kanjur Marg. The power supply to the entire building was shut down that led to halting of the trading operations yesterday.

Bomb blast outside Indian consulate office in Nepal

A bomb went off outside an Indian consulate office in Nepal's Biratnagar, damaging the wall of the premises, a media report said today. Morang SP Arun Kumar BC said the blast took place last night in an open space behind the building that caused minor damage to the wall. Police said they are investigating to find out on who caused the blast, Kathmandu Post reported. Investigating officers suspect that cadres of a local political group have caused the blast. The party had called a general strike in Biratnagar yesterday. The security around the blast site has been upped after the incident. Meanwhile, security sources in New Delhi citing inputs from Nepal said a small explosion took place at Biratnagar at the Indian Embassy consulate office. This is a temporary office which had been set up during floods in Nepal and north Bihar and continues to function since then. Oklahoma wildfires kill 2; threat nears historic level

Wildfires that have killed two people in western Oklahoma are nearing conditions not seen in at least a decade because of the mixture of high temperatures, low humidity and heavy winds, the National Weather Service said today. Weather service meteorologist Doug Speheger said tomorrow's forecast represents the most potential for the spread of wildfires in the past 10 years of a database that considers a variety of factors. Temperatures are projected to reach the mid-90s with humidity below 10 per cent and winds gusting to 64 kph. The forecast includes northwestern Texas and the Texas Panhandle where firefighting aircraft is stationed in Amarillo, Childress, Abilene and Fort Stockton. US rescue team recovers bodies of missing Indian, daughter

An inter-agency search and rescue team has recovered two more bodies of an Indian American family who were feared drowned in a California river some 10 days ago, US officials said today. The bodies have been identified of that of Sandeep Thottapilly, 41, and his daughter Saachi, nine, who along with his wife, Soumya, 38, and son Siddhant, 12, went missing 10 days ago. They were driving from Portland, Oregon to San Jose in Southern California. The bodies of Sandeep and Saachi were recovered yesterday inside the vehicle, a Honda Pilot, which was recovered from about 4-6 feet of river water, the police said. Trackmen found working in senior officials' homes: NR suspends officials

Northern Railway has suspended some senior officials who were found to have employed trackmen as domestic help in their homes, a NR spokesperson said. A TV channel showed how the men who were supposed to be engaged in safety work on the tracks were doing menial jobs at the homes of senior officials. "The officials of Northern Railway who have been identified have been suspended forthwith. Further disciplinary action is underway," said Northern-Railway's spokesperson Nitin Chowdhury in a statement. Fire in Kolaghat power station, generation not affected

A fire broke out at the Kolaghat Thermal Power Station this evening but was brought under control without any generation getting affected. "A fire was reported in a transformer but was brought under control. There have been no impact on generation," a West Bengal Power Development Corporation spokesperson said. Officers rushed to the site for a detailed investigation. The fire brigade and other emergency agencies present within the premises of the plant controlled the blaze, he said. Two labourers killed as under-construction building collapses

Two labourers were killed and 23 others injured as an under-construction building collapsed here today afternoon. Additional Superintendent of Police S Sahu said, "Two pillars of an under-construction building at Bargi Hills under Tilwara police station limits collapsed. The iron net structure of the roof came down subsequently. Two labourers, trapped under the debris, died while 23 others were injured." The deceased were identified as Vinay Bari (36) and Sunil Dubey (30). Sahu said the injured were rescued with the help of other labourers and rushed to Government Medical College Hospital. There were ten women among the injured. District collector Chhavi Bharadwaj, who visited the site, said a judicial inquiry would be conducted into the incident by an SDM-level officer, and if the construction was found to be sub-standard, an FIR would be registered against the builder. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday attached two commercial properties in Delhi and land in Gurugram worth Rs 14.53 crore in a money laundering case involving M/s Pushp Steel and Mining Pvt. 4 killed, 21 injured in two separate road accidents in HP

Four persons were killed and 21 others injured in two separate road accidents in Himachal Pradesh today, police said. The first incident took place when a car veered off the road and fell into a deep gorge near Lug Valley in Kullu district this afternoon, they said. All the four occupants of the car were killed, police added. The police reached the spot on receiving information and retrieved the bodies with the help of local people, they said. The deceased, which included a woman, were identified as Sarla Devi, Sohan Lal, Hari Singh and Tikkam Ram, all residents of Pachahali village near Kullu. Several govt, aided schools lack fire safety NOC: DoE tells HC

The city government's Department of Education (DoE) today told the Delhi High Court that around 26 government-run and 105 government-aided schools did not have valid 'No Objection Certificate' from the Fire Service department. In its affidavit, the DoE said that as per the information collected from the government schools and Delhi Fire Service department, out of the 725 government school buildings, only 463 have been issued valid fire NOC at present. Of the remaining 262 schools, 198 have applied for the renewal of fire NOC, it added. "Out of the remaining 64, the fire service department has conveyed shortcomings like width of staircase, width of classroom gate in 38 schools while 26 do not have the feasibility to be issued the fire NOC. "Out of the 208 government-aided schools, 103 have valid fire NOCs, while the remaining 105 do not have it and have been asked to apply for the same at the earliest," the affidavit said. PIL in HC claims Jet Airways violating flight safety regulations

The Delhi High Court today sought the responses of the Centre, aviation regulator DGCA and Jet Airways on a PIL alleging that the airline was flouting national and international flight safety regulations by allowing unauthorised persons to travel overseas by "masquerading" as its crew on a "general declaration". A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar issued notice to the Civil Aviation Ministry, Directorate General of Civil Aviation and the airline and sought their replies to the plea which has alleged that the general declaration allowed such persons "to avoid obtaining a visa and pass undetected into foreign territory". The petition by one Rajneesh Kapur, who claims to be a journalist, submits that General Declaration (GD) is a declaration of the passengers, air crew and cargo, being ferried in an international flight by the flight operator.
