Two killed, 3 injured in bus-container truck crash

At least two persons died on the spot and three others were injured when a goods-laden container truck collided with a stationary luxury bus on the Ahmedabad-Mumbai highway near here this morning, police said. The deceased included a 61-year-old woman, Madhuben Solanki, a resident of Bhavnagar in Gujarat, they said. The bus was on its way to Mumbai from Ahmedabad when it suffered a tyre burst and was brought to a halt by the driver. A goods-laden container truck coming from the opposite direction crashed into the bus at around about 7.30 am, they said. The accident left two persons dead and three injured, who were admitted to local hospitals for treatment, police said. The bus driver, identified only as Rameshbhai (45), was the other deceased, they added.

Jharkhand: Nine killed in road accident, CM announces ex-gratia

Nine persons were killed and eight others injured when a vehicle they were travelling in turned turtle near Adharma village in Simdega district, police said today. While state's Chief Minister Raghubar Das has announced one lakh rupees each to the bereaved families, the Simdega administration has also given Rs 20,000 to the family of accident victims, an official release said. The bus, which was on its way from Kamdara in Gumla district to Simdega, overturned yesterday night as the driver lost control on the steering, police said. Superintendent of Police Sanjiv Kumar said that seven people died on the spot, while two others succumbed to their injuries in the hospital. Three passengers, who were seriously injured, have been referred to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences in Ranchi, the officer said.

Kin get Rs 7.86L compensation for student's death in accident

The Thane Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) has awarded a compensation of Rs 7.86 lakh to a couple for the death of their 19-year-old son, an engineering student, in a road accident in 2015. MACT member and district judge K D Vadane, in an order passed last week, directed the Thane Municipal Transport (TMT), the transport wing of the city civic body, to make the payment to the kin of the deceased. The victim, Vinayak Achare, a first-year engineering student at a college in Karjat township, was riding his motorcycle back home in Thane on April 3, 2015 when a speeding TMT bus hit his two-wheeler from behind. The boy sustained multiple grievous injuries in the mishap and died, his family told the tribunal. The Shree Nagar police had registered an offence in connection with the incident, they said. 4.7-Magnitude quake hits temblor-prone central Italy

A 4.7-magnitude quake has hit an area of central Italy near Macerata which was struck by a series of powerful quakes in 2016. No deaths or injuries have been reported. Mayors in towns affected are reporting some damage from the temblor, which struck around dawn, and said that checks were under way. Schools in many towns have been closed for the day, as was a local train line. 'Want US diplomat on no-fly list'

Pakistan has initiated the process to put a senior US diplomat, involved in a fatal road accident that killed a biker, on the Exit Control List. A fast-moving Land Cruiser, driven by Col Joseph Emanuel Hall, the defence and air attache at the US embassy, jumped the red light and hit a motorcycle carrying two men at a traffic signal near Islamabad's Daman-e-Koh area on Saturday. One of them died and the other was injured. The capital police sent a letter to the Ministry of Interior, asking to include Hall's name in the Exit Control List (ECL). The ministry has started the process, Dawn News reported. Inspector General of Police Sultan Azam Temuri said that a written request was sent to the ministry yesterday seeking the name of the American diplomat on the ECL. Prior to take-off, Rai, expressed concerns regarding mosquitos on board. Mumbai airport's main runway shut for 6 hrs; 225 flights cancelled

Flight services at the Mumbai airport were badly hit today with various airlines cancelling as many as 225 flights, besides rescheduling scores of others, due to the closure of the main runway for six hours for pre-monsoon maintenance work. The Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), which runs the city airport, has announced the closure of the main runway (O9/27) between 11 am and 5 pm for today and tomorrow. As many as 225 flights operated by various airlines, including Jet Airways, IndiGo, Air India, SpiceJet, GoAir and Vistara, were cancelled during the closure of the runway, an airport official said. The city airport is the main base of Jet Airways and a bulk of its operations, both domestic and international, are carried out from here.
