Mexico hit by earthquake

An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter Scale struck Mexico City early on Monday morning, sending many people out onto the streets.Media report said that the epicentre of the tremblor is 43 kilometers east of Oaxaca at a depth of 10 kilometers.The earthquake is said to have occured at 6.56 GMT, the US Geological Survey said. Iran resumes hunt for missing plane

Iranian rescue teams resumed their search today for a passenger plane that disappeared high in the Zagros mountains the previous day with 66 people onboard, local media reported. State television said the weather had improved after blizzard conditions hampered search efforts Sunday, and that helicopters were now able to take part in the hunt for Aseman Airlines flight EP3704. The authorities had called off the rescue effort overnight as heavy snow and rain made it impossible to work. The ATR-72 twin-engine plane, in service for 25 years, left the capitals Mehrabad airport at around 8:00 am (0430 GMT) on Sunday and was heading towards the city of Yasuj, some 500 kilometres to the south. It is thought to have crashed on the Dena mountain of Irans southwestern Zagros range, but one official said there could be as many as 100 peaks to search in the vast and remote area. Five students killed in Pune-Bangalore NH accident

Five students were killed and 29 others were injured in a road mishap in Kolhapur district of western Maharashtra on Monday.The accident took place when a truck carrying the students overturned after an unidentified vehicle dashed against it at Nagaon Phata on Pune-Bangalore National Highway on Monday.The deceased are yet to be identified while the injured have been rushed to a local hospital for immediate treatment.Police rushed to the spot on immediate information.A case has been registered and further details are awaited.

Iran plane crash: UN Secretary-General offers condolences

The United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has extended condolences to the families of the victims and the people and Government of Iran, over the plane crash in the country that claimed 66 lives.A statement released by Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesman for the Secretary-General, read, "The Secretary-General was deeply saddened to learn of the tragic airplane accident today near Yasuj, Iran.The Secretary-General extends his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and to the people and Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran."On Sunday, 66 people were killed after a commercial plane crashed in a mountainous area in central Iran.Aseman Airline's Tehran-Yasuj flight, which had taken off from Mehrabad International Airport in Tehran disappeared from the radars within 50 minutes and crashed near Semirom city in the Padena Mountain in southern Isfahan province.

A fire gutted a textiles market in Haitis capital, less than a week after a blaze partially destroyed a historic market, underscoring authorities failure to ensure public safety. Death toll in Beawar cylinder blast in Rajasthan reaches 19

The death toll in an LPG cylinder blast during a wedding function on Friday night in Beawar town of Ajmer district rose to 19 with the recovery of 10 more bodies today, police said. Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje has also ordered an inquiry into the incident and has appointed the chairman of the Ajmer Revenue Board as the investigating officer (IO), an official said. The IO has been asked to submit a report to the state government and also give suggestions so that such an incident does not not recur, he said. The officer will also investigate for lapses by departments concerned. Ten more bodies were recovered today from the debris. With this the toll rose to 19. MACT awards Rs 1.04 cr compensation to man hurt in road accident

The Motor Accident Claims Tribunal has awarded a compensation of Rs 1.04 crore to a 38-year-old man who became disabled following a road accident in 2015. MACT member KD Vadane in his recent order awarded the compensation to the claimant, Kiran alias Kirron Patil, a resident of Bhiwandi. Vadane ordered the two respondents--owner of the container Roshan Freight Carriers and the insurer The New India Assurance Co. Limited--to jointly and severally make the payment along with 8 per cent interest from the date of filing of the claim that is December 2015. The owner of the container, involved in the accident, did not appear before MACT and hence the case was decided ex-parte against him. As per the plea, on September 2, 2015 when Patil was going to Bhiwandi from Thane, the container rammed into his motorcycle, and he was seriously hurt in the accident. Israeli PM sends condolences over Iran plane crash

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu today offered his condolences over the 66 people killed in an Iranian plane crash, just moments after he launched a blistering attack on Tehran's government. "I take this opportunity to send condolences to the families of the 66 civilians that lost their lives in the plane accident today," Netanyahu said at the Munich Security Conference. "We have no quarrel with the people of Iran, only with the regime that torments them," he added. Earlier in his fiery speech, the premier warned Tehran not to "test Israel's resolve" as tensions between the arch enemies have reached fresh heights over Iran's activities in Syria. Fresh avalanche warning issued in J&K

Authorities today issued a fresh low danger avalanche warning for high altitude areas, advising people to take precautionary measures. The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) had yesterday also issued a low danger avalanche warning on the basis of information received from Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE). "A fresh low danger avalanche warning has been issued for Baramulla, Gulmarg, Furkian-Z Gali and Kupwara-Chowkibal-Tangdhar, Anantnag, Kulgam, Budgam, Kupwara, Bandipora, Ganderbal and Bandipora-Kanzalwan-Gurez sector in the Valley," an official spokesman said. He said the warning is also valid for Poonch, Rajouri, Reasi, Ramban, Doda, Kishtwar and Udhampur districts in Jammu and Kargil and Leh districts in Ladakh besides Srinagar-Jammu national highway. "People living in these avalanche prone areas have been advised by the SDMA to take precautionary measures," the spokesman said.

Woman killed after portion of house collapses in Jammu

A 35-year-old woman was today killed when a portion of her house collapsed during renovation here, police said. Aparna Mahajan was washing clothes in the bathroom when the incident took place at Rehari Colony here. She was trapped her under the debris, a police official said. He said that a police team rescued her and took her to a hospital where she was declared brought dead. The labourers engaged in the renovation work and other members of the family escaped unhurt, the official said. The incident took place when a door of the building was being demolished, he said.

1 killed, 4 injured as app cab rams into road divider

The students were on their way to a national-level eligibility test for PhD programme at New Town from their hostel in the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST) campus at Shibpur. The car rammed into the median divider after descending from Maa flyover onto the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass, injuring the four students and the driver of the vehicle, police said.
