Cold wave claims 6 more lives in Nepal; toll reaches 50

Intense cold weather in Nepal's southern region has claimed six more lives, taking to 50 the death toll due to severe winter conditions in the Himalayan nation, police said today. Three people, including two septuagenarians, died in Rautahat district while another three, including a two-year- old child, died in Saptari district yesterday, they said. Life has been severely affected by the cold waves that hit mainly southern Nepal districts over the past one week. About 50 people have died of cold wave across the country this winter, with 27 of these deaths taking place in the southern Saptari district alone, the Kathmandu Post reported. In a separate incident, five people were killed in a jeep accident in Sankhuwasabha district of eastern Nepal today. The chairperson of Makalu Rural Municipality, Khadga Katuwal, was among the deceased, according to Chief District Officer Shivaraj Joshi. 5.3-magnitude earthquake jolts Afghanistan

An earthquake of magnitude 5.3 on the Richter scale struck Afghanistan's Hindu Kush on Sunday afternoon.According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred 42 kilometres South of Jarm, Afghanistan at a depth of 204.2 km depth.The tremor reportedly occurred at around 01:40 p.m. local time.No loss of lives and properties have been reported so far.

Nightclub ceiling collapses in Spanish capital; 26 injured

Spanish authorities say that 26 people have been injured when a ceiling collapsed at a Madrid nightclub. Emergency services for the Spanish capital say that 11 of the injured revellers were taken to nearby hospitals to be treated for "bruises and light wounds." The others were treated on site. Emergency services say that a section of the ceiling measuring 16 square meters fell on the people at the nightclub located in southern Madrid today. Arturo de Blas, who led the emergency response, said that the "ceiling in the second floor fell on top of the people inside.

PNG volcanic eruption sparks further evacuations

Thousands of residents of an island near a Papua New Guinea volcano have been evacuated after escalating eruptions sparked fears of a possible landslide and tsunami, authorities and reports said today. The previously dormant volcano, more than 500 metres (1,640 feet) high, on the northern island of Kadovar off PNG erupted on January 5 with all 600 residents evacuated. 62-year-old man dies in road accident, wife injured

A 62-year-old man died while his wife sustained injuries after their scooter was hit by a bus on Phagwara-Mehli bypass near Palahi village here, a police officer said today. The deceased was identified as Vishawnath Singh, a resident of nearby Chak Hakeem village, the police officer said. His wife Sundar Devi was rushed to a nearby hospital, he said. A case was registered for causing death by negligence against the unidentified bus driver after the accident yesterday, he said.

7.3-magnitude earthquake strikes off Peru; tsunami threat

A powerful earthquake struck off Peru's coast early today, prompting a US agency to issue a tsunami threat message for parts of the country and neighbouring Chile. The US Geological Survey reported that the temblor had a preliminary magnitude of 7.3. There have been no immediate reports of casualties or damage. The epicentre was 42 kms south-southwest of Acari, with the earthquake hitting at 4:18 am local time at a depth of 12.1 kms. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said that "hazardous tsunami waves are forecast for some coasts." A statement says that tsunami waves reaching 0.3 metres to one metre "above the tide level are possible for some coasts of Peru." It also says waves are forecast to be less than 0.3 meters for the coasts of Chile.

Voice data recorder of crashed chopper traced

The Coast Guard has traced the Aircraft Voice Data Recorder (VDR) of the Pawan Hans helicopter which crashed off the Mumbai coast yesterday while the recovery of the remaining debris is in progress. Simultaneously, the Navy has widened its search operations for the two missing crew members of the chopper. "Search for the missing ONGC crew continues till recovery. Aircraft Voice Data Recorder (VDR) has been recovered and recovery of balance debris is in progress," a Coast Guard spokesperson said today. Fire kills eight, wounds 50 in northern Portugal

Fire ripped through a local community centre in northern Portugal late Saturday, killing eight people and injuring another 50, police said. "Around 70 people were having dinner in the building when the fire broke out and we have a number of dead people as well as between 50 and 60 people injured," civil protection chief Paulo Santos told AFP. The fire broke out near Tondela, which lies between the northern towns of Coimbra and Viseu which were badly hit by a series of deadly wildfires in October, with some of the more seriously wounded airlifted to hospital by helicopter, he said. Tondela mayor Jose Antonio Jesus told RTP public television that the fire broke out when a wood-burning stove exploded as people gathered for an amateur card tournament where they were playing Sueca, a very popular game in Portugal. Fearing accident, Parrikar says he no longer rides a scooter

While media reports have often projected Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar as a politician who moves around on a scooter, Parrikar said he no longer does so fearing an accident. "People ask me whether I travel on a scooter. I tell them that I dont any more. My mind is filled with work related thoughts and if I ride my scooter while my mind is somewhere else, then I could meet with an accident," Parrikar told a gathering of BJP workers in Canacona yesterday. Driving home a point of safety at the gathering, Parrikar said that he now avoids riding or travelling pillion on a scooter. He added that the state government would be adopting various measures to reduce accidents on the roads of Goa and in the process bring down fatalities. In the past, media reports have often cited that Parrikar was still riding a scooter in Panaji as he went about purchasing things from the local markets.

At least 8 dead, dozens injured in Portugal building fire

At least eight people died and dozens were injured, some seriously, after a heater exploded and started a fire at the packed premises of a local residents' association in the north of Portugal, officials said. A wood-burning stove exploded in the two-story building late last night in the town of Tondela, around 250 kilometres north of the Portuguese capital of Lisbon, local mayor Jose Gomes Jesus told reporters. Civil Protection Agency commander Paulo Santos told local radio station TSF that at least 50 people were injured. Witnesses speaking to local television channels said the fire caused panic among the roughly 60 people in the building who were taking part in an evening amateur card tournament. They said people crowded the exits as thick smoke filled the building. Dozens of fire crews and two rescue helicopters were at the scene taking the injured to hospital. Authorities could not immediately be reached for comment.
