DMK regime asks Guv Ravi to give nod to prosecute former AIADMK ministers

Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi should not delay any further his sanction to prosecute former Ministers in the previous AIADMK regime and clear the 13 Bills pending with him for his assent, the State government urged Raj Bhavan on Tuesday. Writing to Ravi, Tamil Nadu Law Minister S Regupathy said no further steps could be taken in the case involving the Gutkha scam since no reply has been received from the Raj Bhavan on CBI's request for sanction to prosecute C Vijayabaskar and B V Ramana, former Ministers in the AIADMK regime (2016-21). On September 12, 2022, the CBI's plea for sanction was forwarded to the Governor by the state Cabinet. The central agency is probing the scam in which bribes were allegedly paid by the Gutkha firms. Vijayabaskar and Ramana were among the accused. The TN Law Minister said similarly, the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) sought sanction to prosecute KC Veeramani and M R Vijayabaskar, also former Ministers in the AIADMK government. Appointment of ministers CM's sole prerogative, says DMK on Senthil Balaji

The ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu on Friday strongly asserted that appointment and dismissal of ministers is the sole prerogative of the chief minister and lashed out at Governor R N Ravi for his move of dismissing V Senthil Balaji from the MK Stalin-led Cabinet, which was subsequently retracted on the advice of the Union Home Ministry on the matter. Stating that the Tamil Nadu government was "disregarding" the Governor's action of sacking Balaji, Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu said Stalin will write a detailed letter to Ravi on the matter. The party also said it may weigh all options and legal factors related to Ravi's action, which came in for criticism from allies of the ruling party as well as other quarters. Addressing the press here along with Law Minister S Reghupathy and Rajya Sabha member P Wilson, who is also an advocate, Thennarasu recalled Stalin earlier saying the Governor has no right to sack Balaji and that the issue will be faced legally. He alleged that Ravi acted

DMK may consider browbeating TN Guv Ravi over Senthil Balaji's dismissal

The DMK may weigh all the options and legal factors related to Governor RN Ravi's later backtracked move to dismiss Minister V Senthil Balaji from the Cabinet, sources said on Friday. The party brass may consult its leaders and office-bearers to devise a strategy --both legal and political-- on the matter. "The Governor has backtracked and he has been exposed thoroughly," an office-bearer told PTI adding all the political maneuvering of the BJP to target the DMK has been backfiring in Tamil Nadu. Sources said there was no need 'immediately' to look into legal aspects or consider anything else (such as the possibility of political interests over the dismissal and a counter-strategy to frustrate it), as the dismissal was now on hold. On Thursday, hours after dismissing Balaji from the cabinet, Ravi had later kept it in abeyance. The DMK, may however consider weighing legal options to take on the Governor for his alleged excesses and fight the BJP politically at the right time and as

DMK President and Chief Minister M K Stalin on Thursday lashed out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for seeking to implement the Uniform Civil Code. "I am telling you categorically, people are ready to teach a fitting lesson to the BJP in the upcoming LS polls," he said. Stalin made the remarks here in his address while presiding over the wedding of the grand-daughter of a party office-bearer.

TN BJP secretary arrested over social media post, Annamalai slams DMK

Tamil Nadu BJP leader S G Suryah was arrested by the police from Chennai late on Friday, with the party's state unit chief K Annamalai slamming the move as an attempt to "curtail free speech." Police sources said the action was based on a CPI(M) complaint against a social media post of the BJP state secretary. Suryah was arrested under sections of IPC and the IT Act, police said. "The arrest of @BJP4TamilNadu State Secretary Thiru @SuryahSG avl is highly condemnable. His only mistake was to expose the nasty double standards of the communists, allies of DMK. Using state machinery to curtail free speech & getting jittery for the slightest criticism is unbecoming of a democratically elected leader and, indeed, are signs of an autocratic leader in the making," Annamalai tweeted. "These arrests will not deter us & we will continue to be bearers of the uncomfortable truth!" he added.

In swipe at Congress and DMK, Shah dubs them '2G,3G, 4G' parties

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday took a swipe at the Congress and DMK over dynasty politics and alleged corruption, calling them "2G, 3G, 4G" parties and said the time has come in Tamil Nadu to throw away these and give the power to a "son of the soil". Addressing a public meeting here to highlight the nine years of the BJP-led NDA government's achievements, he also lashed out at the two opposition parties at the Centre for opposing the abrogation of Article 370 and lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for "uniting Kashmir" with India by a stroke of the pen. "Congress and DMK are 2G, 3G, 4G parties. I am not talking about the 2G (spectrum allocation scam). 2G means two generations, 3G means three generations and 4G means four generations," he said. AIADMK urges TN govt to take precautionary measures during temple festivals

AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Sunday urged the Tamil Nadu government to take precautionary measures to ensure the safety of devotees when they congregate in large numbers to take part in events such as the Chithirai Festival in Madurai. The leader of the opposition in the Assembly was critical of the DMK regime, stating that because it did not take adequate measures, there had been fatal incidents in the past two years in various places, including the chariot accidents in Dharmapuri and Thanjavur and the five youths drowning during a temple ritual in Madipakkam in the city last month. Observing that over 10 lakh people gather to witness Lord Kallazhagar enter the Vaigai river in Madurai district during the Chithirai festival every year, Palaniswami claimed that during the AIADMK rule precautionary measures were taken with the support of the police force so that even minor incidents would not take place. However, during the Chithirai Festival held on May 5, 2023,

CBI to probe corruption in Metro project during previous DMK regime: BJP

Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai on Sunday said he had lodged a complaint with the CBI on a project implemented during the previous DMK regime (2006-11), over which he had recently levelled corruption allegations. Speaking to reporters, the BJP leader said his party was committed to fighting against corruption and it would reflect in its proposed statewide yatra titled 'En Mann En Makkal' (my soil, my people), ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. "You have started seeing it in Tamil Nadu also," he said, apparently referring to the recent release of the 'DMK Files' by him, in which he had listed the assets (and their valuation) allegedly belonging to leaders of the ruling party in the state. Responding to a question, Annamalai said he had lodged a complaint with the CBI about the Chennai Metro Rail Phase I project vis-a-vis kickbacks, and submitted proof as well. "I was told that six others too have filed complaints. A firm which had taken part in the biding process has filed a ...

BJP TN president Annamalai sends legal notice to DMK leader Bharathi

BJP Tamil Nadu unit president K Annamalai on Saturday sent a legal notice to DMK leader R S Bharathi seeking "Rs 500 crore and one" towards damages for defaming him by alleging that he received crores of rupees from a scam. Referring to Bharathi's recent press conference, the notice sent by advocate R C Paul Kanagaraj said an allegation was made by the DMK leader that Annamalai received money as part of the "Aarudhra scam." The scam in which depositors were duped in Tamil Nadu is under police probe. Immediately after Annamalai released 'DMK Files' on April 14, Bharathi had on the same day alleged it was a diversionary attempt as the BJP leader faced allegations of receiving crores from the scam. The notice to Bharathi said: "Initially you say he received several crores and then you say he and his associates received Rs 84 crore directly. You don't reveal any further details, such as who paid the money to my client or who these associates are. You say you have come to know this becau

Hitting back at the DMK over its legal notice seeking apology and Rs 500 crore in damages for his graft allegations against party president and Chief Minister M K Stalin, Tamil Nadu BJP leader K Annamalai on Monday sought a similar amount from the ruling party for making certain "baseless" allegations against him. In a statement titled "I am ready for legal action," uploaded on his Twitter page, the state BJP president also claimed there was 'proof' for alleged corruption in the Metro rail project in the earlier DMK regime and said "we are going to submit them to the CBI."
