Trump-Xi talks may determine jailed Hong Kong activist Jimmy Lai's fate

Pro-democracy activist Jimmy Lai once hoped US President Donald Trump could help stop the imposition of a controversial national security law. The law not only took effect but was also used to sentence him to 20 years in prison. Ahead of an anticipated trip by Trump to Beijing to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping next week, Lai's son said his family is now hoping that Trump can help secure his father's release. Lai, a prominent critic of Beijing, founded a pro-democracy newspaper that was shut down during a crackdown following the city's massive anti-government protests in 2019. Observers say the former media mogul's plight symbolises a decline in freedoms Beijing promised when the former British colony returned to Chinese rule in 1997. In an interview with The Associated Press, Sebastien Lai said he fears the clock is ticking for his 78-year-old father. Trump is expected to discuss trade, the Iran war and Taiwan with Xi. But he said he is also planning to bring up Lai, telling ..

China exports jump 14.1% in April despite Iran war, US tariff pressures

China's exports rose 14.1% in April from a year earlier, the government said Saturday, despite the Iran war and lingering impacts from higher US tariffs. The data were released just days ahead of a planned meeting next week between US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing. That beat analysts' estimates and was a significant improvement from March's 2.5% year-on-year expansion. Imports climbed 25.3%, slower than the 27.8% growth in March but still robust. The Trump-Xi summit comes at a time when relations are beset by multiple issues, with efforts to end the war in Iran eclipsing the usual sources of friction. "We're expecting that overall external demand will remain a solid driver of growth this year," said Lynn Song, chief economist for Greater China at Dutch bank ING, likely led by China's exports of semiconductors and autos. In March, Chinese leaders set an annual economic growth target of 4.5% to 5%, slightly lower than last year's 5% expansion and t

WH correspondents' dinner attack accused seeks recusal of top DOJ officials

A man charged with attacking the White House Correspondents' Association dinner is seeking to disqualify top Justice Department officials from direct involvement in prosecuting him because they could be considered victims or witnesses in the case, creating a potential conflict of interest. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche and US Attorney Jeanine Pirro were attending the April 25 event at the Washington Hilton when Cole Tomas Allen allegedly ran through a security checkpoint and fired a shotgun at a Secret Service officer. In a court filing late Thursday, Allen's attorneys argued that it creates at least the appearance of a conflict of interest for Blanche and Pirro to be making any prosecutorial decisions in the case. "As this case proceeds closer to trial, the country and the world will continue to wonder - how can the American justice system permit a victim to prosecute a criminal defendant in a case involving them?" defense attorneys Eugene Ohm and Tezira Abe wrote. Russia, Ukraine agree to 3-day ceasefire and prisoner swap, says Trump

President Donald Trump has said that the leaders of Russia and Ukraine have agreed to his request for a three-day ceasefire and an exchange of prisoners, adding that such a halt to hostilities could be the "beginning of the end" of the long war between them. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Yuri Ushakov, Russian President Vladimir Putin's foreign affairs adviser, both confirmed the agreement. "I asked and, President Putin agreed. President Zelenskyy agreed -- both readily," Trump said on Friday as he departed the White House to attend a dinner at his Virginia golf club. " And we have a little period of time where they're not going to be killing people. That's very good " Trump earlier Friday had announced on social media that the ceasefire would run Saturday through Monday. Saturday is Victory Day in Russia, a holiday that commemorates the victory over Nazi Germany in World War II. "I am pleased to announce that there will be a THREE DAY CEASEFIRE (May 9th, 10th, and 11t

New York to restrict ICE despite threat from Donald Trump's border czar

President Donald Trump's border czar has threatened to "flood the zone" with immigration agents if New York passes bills to limit local coordination with the federal government's crackdown. New York seems ready to do so anyway. "I don't take well to threats," New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said Thursday. "We're going to pass what we think is important to protect New Yorkers." Tensions are escalating as Democrats attempt to place guardrails around the Trump administration's immigration agenda following the Republican's often chaotic and violent deportation efforts. The proposals, which are not yet finalised, would bar state and local law enforcement from entering into agreements with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement or acting as civil immigration agents, and deny ICE from entering sensitive locations such as schools or hospitals without a judicial warrant. The governor, a Democrat, is also moving to ban federal, state and local law enforcement from wearing masks while on duty, al

US to revoke passports for thousands of parents who owe child support

The US State Department will begin revoking the US passports of thousands of parents who owe a significant amount of unpaid child support. The department told The Associated Press on Thursday that the revocations would begin Friday and be focused on those who owe USD 100,000 or more. That would apply to about 2,700 American passport holders, according to figures supplied to the State Department by the Department of Health and Human Services. The revocation programme, plans for which were first reported by the AP in February, soon will be greatly expanded to cover parents who owe more than USD 2,500 in unpaid child support - the threshold set by a little-enforced 1996 law, the State Department said. It was not clear on Thursday how many passport holders owe more than USD 2,500 because HHS is still collecting data from state agencies that track the figures, but it could encompass many more thousands of people, officials said. Until this week, only those who applied to renew their ...
