SC asks Maharashtra to conduct final counselling for admissions to PG medical, dental courses

Coming down heavily on the Maharashtra government for the problems being faced by students in admissions to post graduate medical and dental courses in the 2019-20 academic year, the Supreme Court Tuesday directed it to conduct the final round of counselling by June 14. The court questioned the state for not conducting any counselling after the apex court's order stayed the notification to grant 10 per cent reservation in the admissions for 2019-20 to economically weaker sections (EWS) in PG medical and dental courses. A vacation bench of Justices Indu Malhotra and M R Shah directed the state to issue advertisements in local newspapers having wide publication for counselling for admission in the current academic year and also to specify that it would be the "final round of counselling". It directed that the entire process of counselling should be completed on or before June 14 and admissions be given on the basis of merit. The bench also directed that no further petition and ...

DU colleges may increase number of seats under sports, ECS categories without breaching 5-pc cap

The colleges under the Delhi University (DU) may increase the number of seats sanctioned under the ECA and sports categories at the department level in case there is a higher demand, but without breaching the five-per cent ceiling of sports and ECA admissions. Every college has to take a maximum of five per cent of the total intake of students under the sports and Extra Curricular Activities (ECA) categories. In case a department does not see the number of seats being filled up under these categories, the vacant seats can be transferred to another department, but without breaching the five-per cent cap. Till last year, this was only applicable to the ECA category but now it has been extended to sports also. "Usually it is seen that the students in the sports and ECA categories opt for humanities and social science programmes, rather than science, since they feel they may not be able to cope with the pressure in the latter. A vacation bench comprising Justices Indu Malhotra and M R Shah, which was reluctant initially to hear the fresh plea, agreed to hear it on Tuesday. One of the fresh pleas filed by Sagar Sarda said that "new seat matrix", "fresh choice filing of medical streams" and "fresh round of counselling for admissions" should be allowed in view of the fact that the apex court has stayed the 10 per cent quota to students of economically weaker sections (EWS) in the courses for the current academic year. Rishihood Helps Students to Look at Career Choices Differently

/ -- Career counsellors say that students tend to take up courses and colleges mostly under peer pressure, societal views, the paucity of time and lack of information. Many students quit after the first year of college as they discover that the subject is not of their choice or complete the degree only to switch the fields later. Also, the college environment expects the students to be independent thinkers for which schools do not prepare them. Many of the experts recommend 'Gap Year', which is already a very popular concept abroad. This allows a student to explore the real world and the internal self by taking some time off after completing school and before entering college. One invests time in experimenting with diversified fields and subjects, honing their existing skills, taking up new activities, travelling extensively and working in the real world. Career coaches believe that a constructively planned and carefully executed gap year can benefit the students more than enrolling .
