The Supreme Court (SC) refused to regularise at least 3.5 lakh contractual teachers in Bihar on Friday.The SC set aside Patna High Court's order that had ruled 'equal pay for equal work' for nearly 3.5 lakh contractual teachers working at the government schools in Bihar.This comes in response to Bihar government's plea challenging Patna High Court's order, which had ruled that contractual teachers in government schools were entitled to salary on a par with regular permanent teachers working in various government schools in Bihar.However, the Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government had filed a petition in the apex court against the High Court's decision.Around 3.5 lakh teachers, who were hired on consolidated pay, demanded equal pay for work, stating that they should also be given all the benefits similar to the regular teachers as they had the same educational qualifications.

A 91-year-old World War II veteran has finally received his high school diploma, eight decades after leaving school to support his family. Pete Sabedra walked across the stage at Derry Area Middle School, about 40 miles east of Pittsburgh, on Wednesday to accept his degree at a special awards ceremony. Alongside Sabedra was his grandson, Kace, who will graduate from the district's high school on May 31. The Jammu and Kashmir Governor's administration has issued notices to 19 private schools for charging "exorbitant" fee and forcing parents to purchase non-prescribed books and stationery from selected vendors in Jammu. The Directorate of School Education Jammu has given three days' time to reply to the notices issued to the principals of these 19 schools. "Complaints have been received from the parents regarding charging of exorbitant fee without the approval of competent authority, the parents are being forced to purchase school books (not prescribed by the authority) and stationery items from selective vendors at very high rates", Director School Education Jammu Anuradha Gupta said in the notice to principals here. She said that in order to verify the complaints, the directorate had constituted teams, which submitted their reports to it. In a student-friendly proposal, the School Education Department in Telangana is considering an idea to provide a QR code on textbooks which would enable students and teachers to access additional online resources. "The idea is basically to print a QR code on the textbook and material (for studying) comes as an addition to the textbook, after scanning it," official sources told PTI. Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has signed a bill that will allow more classroom teachers to carry guns in school, a response to last year's mass shooting at a Parkland high school. DeSantis signed the bill in private Wednesday and issued no statement. It was one of the more contentious bills of a legislative session that ended Saturday. The measure expands an existing school "guardian" program and allows any teacher to volunteer to carry a weapon if their local school district approves. Volunteers must undergo police-style training and a psychiatric evaluation. Under current law, only teachers who also have another role such as sports coach are eligible to carry weapons on campus. Five students had a miraculous escape on Wednesday afternoon after their school bus caught fire on coming in contact with low-tension wires at Saroop Nagar, Salem Tabri, here, police said. All the students, who were below ten years of age, were immediately rescued by the residents and passerby. The bus driver and conductor also escaped with minor burn injuries, they said. The incident took place when the students were returning home. The bus was gutted by fire, they said.
