Ten US elementary students shot by pellet gun

Ten elementary school children in the southern US state of Georgia were hit by what appeared to be a pellet or BB gun when someone in a wooded area started shooting at their playground, an official said. The incident sparked panic at the Wynbrooke Elementary School in DeKalb County as police descended on the scene of what initially appeared to be yet another mass shooting. Caleb Edmonson, an 11-year-old student, told local news WSB-TV 2: "Everybody started to get a little bit panicked, but people started thinking it was a drill, but then a couple of minutes later we saw ambulances, police officers coming in, running down our hallways." The students were taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for non life-threatening injuries or picked up their parents, Portia Kirkland, a spokeswoman for DeKalb County School District told AFP, adding a police investigation was underway. Macron says he plans to scrap the ENA, training school for France's elite

French President Emmanuel Macron said Thursday that he intended to scrap one of the country's most prestigious post-graduate schools, the Ecole Nationale d'Administration, which counts four heads of state among its graduates. "We will need to abolish the ENA, among others, to be able to build something else," he said of the institution in the eastern city of Strasbourg that has educated top French politicians and public officials since 1945. ENA graduates, known as "Enarques" in France, form a network of influence that stretches across the top echelons of politics and business, making it a target for critics of the French establishment for decades. Macron said he was against making other reforms to the institution, which has been criticised for failing to admit a diverse group of students. DU asks govt's higher education dept to finalise nominations for governing bodies

The Delhi University has asked city government's higher education department to finalise nominations for governing bodies from a panel of 188 names submitted by the varsity. The tenure of governing bodies of all the colleges ended on March 8 and the varsity in a letter said that it had not received reply from the government to its earlier letter asking for names. However, Delhi Education Minister Manish Sisodia wrote to the varsity's vice-chancellor earlier this month saying the university had not constituted governing bodies in these colleges and no funds would be released till the bodies are formed. Sources from the varsity, however, said they were awaiting names to be nominated for governing bodies from the higher education department of Delhi government, which had also requested in March for extending the tenure of the governing bodies by three months. The varsity wrote on April 23 to the Directorate of Higher Education asking it to finalise the names to be nominated for governing

IIT-KGP, Jindal Stainless tie up for stainless steel course

IIT-Kharagpur (IIT-KGP) and Jindal Stainless have come together to introduce a 3-credit course on stainless steel and advanced ferrous alloys. This is a part of IIT-KGP's post-graduate curriculum for the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Jindal Stainless said in a release on Thursday. The course shall comprise the study of stainless steel and the uniqueness of its various grades, behavioural and forming characteristics, determination of life-cycle cost and an understanding of the entire gamut of applications, along wit advanced ferrous alloys, it said. The programme will commence as an elective course from the autumn semester (July-November 2019) of the institute, with an initial batch of around 50-60 students. "As a green metal, stainless steel has the potential to re-imagine sustainability. With IIT Kharagpur's expertise, we will be able to drive awareness among the future Indian engineers," Jindal Stainless Director S Bhattacharya said. The course .

Oppn parties meet T'gana Guv; seek judicial probe into exam

As protests over the 'goof up' in declaration of results of intermediate exams entered the fourth day Thursday, Opposition parties led by the Congress met Telangana Governor ESL Narasimhan and demanded a judicial inquiry into it. State Congress president N Uttam Kumar Reddy, who led a delegation of leaders from the Congress, TDP, CPI and Telangana Jana Samiti (TJS) met the Governor and demanded that an ex-gratia of Rs 25 lakh be paid to the families of the deceased. He also sought the suspension of the authorities concerned besides the dismissal of education minister G Jagadeesh Reddy for his alleged incompetence and casual approach. 1.17 lakh seats available under RTE Act this year: Guj govt tells HC

The state government told the Gujarat High Court Wednesday that 1.17 lakh seats are available for admission under the Right to Education (RTE) Act for the poor and needy children in schools in the state in 2019-20. Parents have filed over two lakh forms for these seats so far, the government told a division bench of acting Chief Justice Anant Dave and Justice Biren Vaishnav. More than two lakh admission forms under the RTE Act have been received at over 10,000 schools and government centres have confirmed accepting 1.5 lakh of them after scrutiny, it said. The government's response came on a PIL filed by RTE activist Sandip Munjyasara, who had sought details such as the number of seats available under the act, participating schools and how many of them are run by minority institutions which are exempted from the act. Intermediate results; three more students commit suicide

Three more Intermediate students, including two girls , allegedly committed suicide reportedly due to failure in their exams across Telangana over the past 24 hours, police said Wednesday. With this, the number of students, who allegedly committed suicide since the past few days, has gone up to 13, they said. In a related development, protests against the alleged goof-up inthe declaration of Intermediate exam results continued Wednesday with agitated students and their parents assembling near the Telangana State Board of Intermediate Education (TSBIE) office here. Members of different student organisations were also present, seeking justice for students declared failed in the recent exams. Police said an 18-year-old boy, who failed in Economics and Civics subjects, was found hanging in a shed in the premises of a school at Madur in Medak district around 6.30 am Wednesday. The Telangana government Wednesday decided not to charge any fee for recounting and reverification of papers from failed students, as protests against alleged bungling in declaration of Intermediate examination results continued for the third day. Three more intermediate students allegedly committed suicide reportedly due to failure in the exams during the last 24 hours, police said. With this, the number of students who allegedly committed suicide has gone up to 13 since the past few days,police said. HC stays recruitment of teachers for 2 posts in JNU's 2 Centres under EWS category

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday stayed the recruitment process of teachers for two posts in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) under the economically weaker section (EWS) category following a plea alleging that the reservation was not meant for faculty. Justice Suresh Kumar Kait sought response of the JNU on a plea by four aspirants challenging an advertisement issued by the varsity inviting applications for 97 positions of Assistant Professors, including 10 reserved under EWS quota. The court stayed the recruitment process for two posts in two centres for which the four proposed applicants, including one Sona Mitra, had applied, and listed the matter for July 18. While Mitra wished to apply for the post of Assistant Professor, Centre for Women's Studies, School of Social Sciences, the other three petitioners wanted to apply for the post of Assistant Professor in International Organizations, CIPOD, School of International Studies. 20 injured after thunderstorm, hail hit east China

Massive thunderstorms and hail swept through eastern China's Zhejiang Province on Wednesday, injuring at least 20 people, authorities said. Wild storms and heavy rain hit the city of Wenzhou as students of Wenzhou Vocational & Technical College and recruiters held an exhibition, state-run Xinhua news agency reported. The students were hit and injured by hail, with five hurt badly. The injured students have received treatment and no injuries have been reported by other schools so far, said Liu Tianliang, deputy head of the local education bureau office.
