The state government told the Gujarat High Court Wednesday that 1.17 lakh seats are available for admission under the Right to Education (RTE) Act for the poor and needy children in schools in the state in 2019-20. Parents have filed over two lakh forms for these seats so far, the government told a division bench of acting Chief Justice Anant Dave and Justice Biren Vaishnav. More than two lakh admission forms under the RTE Act have been received at over 10,000 schools and government centres have confirmed accepting 1.5 lakh of them after scrutiny, it said. The government's response came on a PIL filed by RTE activist Sandip Munjyasara, who had sought details such as the number of seats available under the act, participating schools and how many of them are run by minority institutions which are exempted from the act. The Delhi High Court on Wednesday stayed the recruitment process of teachers for two posts in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) under the economically weaker section (EWS) category following a plea alleging that the reservation was not meant for faculty. Justice Suresh Kumar Kait sought response of the JNU on a plea by four aspirants challenging an advertisement issued by the varsity inviting applications for 97 positions of Assistant Professors, including 10 reserved under EWS quota. The court stayed the recruitment process for two posts in two centres for which the four proposed applicants, including one Sona Mitra, had applied, and listed the matter for July 18. While Mitra wished to apply for the post of Assistant Professor, Centre for Women's Studies, School of Social Sciences, the other three petitioners wanted to apply for the post of Assistant Professor in International Organizations, CIPOD, School of International Studies. Massive thunderstorms and hail swept through eastern China's Zhejiang Province on Wednesday, injuring at least 20 people, authorities said. Wild storms and heavy rain hit the city of Wenzhou as students of Wenzhou Vocational & Technical College and recruiters held an exhibition, state-run Xinhua news agency reported. The students were hit and injured by hail, with five hurt badly. The injured students have received treatment and no injuries have been reported by other schools so far, said Liu Tianliang, deputy head of the local education bureau office.

The results for the Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC) examination conducted by the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (GBSHSE) in February-March will be declared on April 30. GBSHSE chairman Ramakrishna Samant Wednesday said the results would be out at 11 a.m on April 30, and the statement of grades/marks of HSSC examination will be issued the same day between 11.30 a.m to 1.30 p.m. A total of 17,893 students had appeared for the examination held between February 28 and March 26.

As many as 97 schoolteachers were found absent from duty during surprise checks in the district, officials said Wednesday. The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union Tuesday alleged that the varsity is trying to take away the jobs of several washermen by bringing a commercial laundry service. However, sources said the administration has plans to bring a laundry service but no deadline has been set. "In the JNU, there are many washermen who from ages are providing washing and other cloth-related services to students. This is a calculated ploy to snatch away their jobs and livelihood," the JNUSU alleged. The university administration, however, said the washermen are not employed with the varsity. It also said the students will have the option of using the services of laundry or washermen. "These washermen have been staying in the campus for long and even their families are staying here. We will not remove these washermen. The commercial laundry service will be for about 1,000 families staying in the campus, not only for the students," said a varsity official.
