Pak's top election body asks interim govts to provide with assistance

Pakistan's top election body on Tuesday asked the federal and provincial interim governments to provide it with every assistance in holding the upcoming general elections in accordance with the law. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) issued a set of guidelines as it was preparing to organize the polls following the dissolution of the national and provincial assemblies. It has become imperative that the election commission shall take all necessary steps under the Constitution and prevalent law for the smooth conduct of general elections, it stated. It instructed the interim governments to ensure compliance with all notifications, directives and provisions of Section 230 of the election law, which pertains to the functions of a caretaker government. The ECP further asked the caretaker governments not to post or transfer any public official after the issuance of this notification under the federal and provincial governments without the commission's prior approval in writing. CEC Rajiv Kumar, T'gana minister named in FIR for alleged affidavit tampering

An FIR was registered against Telangana Excise Minister V Srinivas Goud, after being referred by a Hyderabad court, in Mahabubnagar district for allegedly "tampering" his 2018 Assembly election affidavit, police said on Saturday. While Goud was named as the first accused, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar and several other officials have been made co-accused. The court made the reference to police on a private complaint made by a resident of Mahabubnagar. The FIR, registered on August 11, also mentions former Telangana Chief Electoral Officer Shashank Goel and several other officials as accused who the complainant alleged colluded with Goud and closed the election affidavit with no further action required. The matter was referred to the police by the court for trial of criminal cases relating to elected MPs and MLAs in Hyderabad. The complainant alleged that Goud, MLA from Mahabubngar, "tampered" with the election affidavit by suppressing facts.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi on a bill that seeks to regulate the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and election commissioners, claiming it will influence the fairness of elections.
