The Centre has approved the purchase of 1,000 electric buses for Pune under the PM E-DRIVE scheme, giving a major push to the city's public transport network, Union Minister Murlidhar Mohol said. The induction of the new e-buses is expected to bolster Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd's (PMPML) fleet, ease congestion and help curb vehicular pollution, the BJP MP from Pune said in a statement on Tuesday. Delhi is set to cement its place as the country's Electric Vehicle (EV) capital with 7,000 to 8,000 new electric buses on its roads by February 2026, Transport Minister Pankaj Singh said on Monday. At present, the city has 3,400 electric buses, ?up from 400 when Singh took charge. The fleet is expected to grow to 6,000 by the end of this year, he said. "Based on route rationalisation, Delhi requires 7,000 to 8,000 buses. Experts and passengers have criticised the state-run corporation for the disparity in fares on the electric Shivneri and Shivai buses. Eversource Capital-backed electric mobility firm GreenCell Mobility on Wednesday said it has received the Letter of Award (LOA) for the supply and deployment of 472 e-buses in Madhya Pradesh under the PM e-Bus Sewa Scheme. The company said it has partnered with VE Commercial Vehicles (VECV) to deploy electric buses across six cities in Madhya Pradesh. Delhi will receive more than 1,000 electric buses this month, Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh said. Singh, in an interview with PTI, said Delhi's transport sector is currently operating at a loss of Rs 235 crore. The civic-run Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking wants its fleet to have more than 50 per cent electric buses by 2025-26 and then raise the number to 8,000 in the subsequent years. In a release issued during the day, the metropolis' premier road transport undertaking said it has set an ambitious goal to have 100 per cent zero-emission electric bus fleet by 2026-27.
