Singapore axes controversial Swedish metal band's gig

Singapore on Thursday axed a gig by a Swedish metal band with Satanic beliefs -- whose performances have involved throwing pig's blood onto revellers -- just hours before it was due to go ahead. Regulators had initially granted permission for the concert by Watain, a group of black-clad, tattooed rockers, as long as they removed songs deemed religiously offensive from their performance. But they decided to cancel the show shortly before its scheduled start after advice from the conservative city-state's home affairs ministry. The ministry "expressed serious concerns about the concert, given the band's history of denigrating religions and promoting violence, which has potential to cause enmity and disrupt Singapore's social harmony," said the Infocomm Media Development Authority, which regulates public entertainment. "Watain is known for its Satanist views and some of their previous controversial performances involved animal carcasses and throwing pig's blood on its audience," the ...

Zoya, Reema, Alankrita and Nitya discuss if Bollywood is inclusive of women today

There is a surge in women-led stories in Bollywood but while the female gaze has started to get a space, equal representation is still a distant dream, believe filmmakers Zoya Akhtar, Reema Kagti, Alankrita Shrivastava and Nitya Mehra. The filmmakers, who worked on Amazon Prime Video's India original "Made in Heaven", a show created, written and even directed by a team of women with the expection of Prashant Nair, who directed two episodes, believe the there is change but the odds are still stacked against women in the industry. "There may have been a time when women weren't taken seriously but I haven't experienced that," Zoya, who has been receiving rave reviews for "Gully Boy", told PTI. She believes more than the gender of the maker, it's the kind of film one wants to make that matters. "Notionally, as many people are not buying the tickets for a film with female protagonist, making that is difficult. But every decade has had films which have been women-led and have broken the ...

Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy's son Nikhil Kumaraswamy, a popular actor, said Thursday that he was ready to serve the people of Mandya from where he is expected to contest the coming Lok Sabha elections. Nikhil, the third generation of the mighty Deve Gowda clan, said he would go by the decision of the party on fielding him from Mandya, a Vokkaliga community bastion of JD(S). Idris Elba in talks to replace Will Smith in 'Suicide Squad 2'

Idris Elba is reportedly in negotiations to replace Will Smith in the "Suicide Squad" sequel. The follow-up, which is being branded as a relaunch, will be directed by "Guardians of the Galaxy" helmer James Gunn. Gunn has also written the script. Sources told The Hollywood Reporter, Elba met Gunn on Friday and since things went well the talks began with Warner Bros studio. The "Luther" star was the first and only choice for Gunn and the studio, the insiders said. The move comes a week after Smith left the project due to scheduling issues, who, along with Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, led the ensemble of the 2016 movie and played assassin anti-hero Deadshot. The film would mark Gunn's return to the director's chair after Disney sacked him from "Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 3" last July when his old offensive tweets resurfaced on social media. "Suicide Squad 2" is slated to be released on August 6, 2021.

Diversity is not a trend: Awkwafina

Rapper-actor Awkwafina says it would be unfair to dismiss diversity as a mere "trend". The term has both Hollywood and social media abuzz and the 29-year-old artiste believes inclusion is here to stay. "I think that there's a progressive shift in Hollywood right now. She is currently working on the show "Awkwafina" that tracks her days as a young millennial in her real-life turf Queens, New York. She said the Comedy Central show is equipped with an all-female writers room. Awkwafina also starred in 2018's hit "Crazy Rich Asians", which was an all-Asian cast ensemble.

Of books, female narratives and feminism!

Contemporary Indian writers are chalking out stronger female narratives and the interpretation of feminism too is being redefined. While women writers are taking bolder steps across genres, male authors too are defining their female characters with more earnestness. Ahead of International Women's Day, here's what some writers, both women and men, have to say about what feminism means to them, the impact of women on their writing and their portrayal and sketching of female characters. Reshma K Barshikar, author of The Hidden Children (Two Ravens) and Fade Into Red (Penguin Random House) feels there seems to be a new war afoot, a constant struggle to define feminism - lipstick feminism, second generation feminism, eco feminism, all of which only seem to undermine our singular goal - equal rights for both sexes. Rashmi Joshi, the author of Here and Beyond (Bloomsbury India) says feminism is about battling injustice, breaking out of punishing patriarchal mindsets and the right to a ...

Netflix acquires Gabriel Garcia Marquez's 'One Hundred Years of Solitude' for new series

Nobel Prize winning author Gabriel Garca Mrquez's literary masterpiece "One Hundred Years of Solitude" is coming to the screen for the first time with Netflix adapting the story for a Spanish language original series. "One Hundred Years of Solitude" was first published in 1967 and since that time has sold an estimated 50 million copies around the world and has been translated into 46 languages. Marquez's sons Rodrigo Garcia and Gonzalo Garcia Barcha will serve as executive producers on the series, which will be filmed mainly in Colombia. "For decades our father was reluctant to sell the film rights to Cien Anos de Soledad because he believed that it could not be made under the time constraints of a feature film, or that producing it in a language other than Spanish would not do it justice," said Garcia. He said it was the right time for the book to be brought to the screen format as there is a worldwide acceptance of content in foreign languages in the golden age of series. "We are ...
