Sweden's Ericsson partners VVDN to manufacture passive antennas in India, with global shipments of its first locally made model beginning in July
Swedish telecom gear maker Ericsson on Thursday said it has set up a dedicated Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) development unit in Bengaluru, expanding its R&D presence in the country, and plans to add more than 150 positions. Ericsson India MD Nitin Bansal said expanding ASIC R&D in India will allow the firm to leverage the local technology competence in the country and enhance its capabilities in semiconductor design. "This unit will also contribute towards strengthening the semiconductor ecosystem in the country. Ericsson expects to initially grow its R&D team in India by more than 150 positions," he said. This expansion aligns with Ericsson's strategy to advance its portfolio, particularly through its Ericsson Silicon platform, which is central to creating high-performing, energy-efficient products for mobile networks, the company said in a statement. Ericsson Silicon's range of System on a Chip (SoC) is designed for mobile networks and integrated across

Swedish telecom gear maker Ericsson on Saturday announced setting up a 6G research and development centre in Chennai. Ericsson is also looking to partner with other premier engineering institutes in India for 6G-related research. "This R&D centre in India is a small unit which will become bigger. We only have three in the world. One in Sweden, second in the US and the third one in India. They are all cooperating in 6G-based research," Ericsson, Head of Market Area Southeast Asia, Oceania, and India, Nunzio Mirtillo said at India Mobile Congress. Ericsson's rival Nokia has already set up a 6G lab in Bangalore about two weeks back. India's vision to have ubiquitous coverage under 6G technology has been accepted by UN body ITU's Study Group in its meeting held in Geneva-- a move that is expected to reduce the cost of deployment of the next-generation technology. ITU is responsible for developing international mobile telecommunication standards. Prime Minister Narendra Modi during hi
Bharti Airtel and Ericsson have tested a new technology that claims to save battery of devices on 5G network, the telecom gear maker said on Thursday. Ercisson claimed that its Reduced Capability (RedCap) solution will bring down complexity and extend the battery life of devices while delivering higher data rates. "The successful testing of RedCap technology on our network will enable futuristic IoT broadband adoption for devices including wearables and industrial sensors in a way that is both cost and energy efficient. RedCap's broader applicability will further our innovation agenda to bring out newer applications for consumers, industries and enterprises," Bharti Airtel CTO Randeep Sekhon said. Ericsson RedCap is a new radio access network (RAN) software solution that creates new 5G use cases and enables more 5G connections from devices such as smartwatches, other wearables, and industrial sensors and augmented and virtual reality devices. "With our customers like Airtel ...
Swedish telecom gear maker Ericsson's net sales in India grew over 3.5 times to about Rs 7,400 crore (9.6 billion Swedish Krona) in the third quarter ended September 30, as per its financial report released on Tuesday. Ericsson had recorded 4 per cent of total net sales contribution of 2,721.6 million SEK (about Rs 2,100 crore) from India for the September 2022 quarter. The net sales of Ericsson at the global level during the September 2023 quarter fell by 5 per cent to 64.5 billion SEK due to a sharp decline of business in North America, which was partly offset by sales in South East Asia, Oceania and India. "Networks organic sales in North America were down by 60 per cent YoY (year-on-year) from a record quarter in September 2022 quarter, due to customers' inventory adjustments and a slower deployment pace. The decline in North America was partly offset by growth in India as well as some early 5G markets resuming investments," Ericsson President and CEO Brje Ekholm said. The net
As many as 31 million smartphone users in India are expected to upgrade to 5G phones between now and December, a report by Ericsson said on Tuesday underlining the accelerated pace at which the world's second largest telecom market is adopting the ultra high-speed services. Ericsson estimates the current base of 5G handset users in India to be between 80-100 million. 5G services were launched in India in October last year by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the past months have seen a rapid rollout of these services across the length and breadth of the country by operators like Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel. Swedish telecom maker Ericsson's Consumer Lab's Global Survey released on Tuesday pointed out that 5G users in India stand out for their high quality daily engagement with apps, such as streaming high definition video, video calling services, mobile gaming and augmented reality. Among the big takeaways were the 5G satisfaction levels, and the willingness - by a section of tho
