European Union lawmakers on Tuesday adopted key pieces of a package designed to achieve the EU's climate goals of cutting emissions of the gases that cause global warming by 55 per cent over this decade. European Parliament members approved deals to reform the 27-nation bloc's emissions trading system, introduce a so-called carbon border adjustment mechanism and to create a new hardship fund for vulnerable households and small businesses affected by higher fuel costs arising from the new measures. The reform of the emissions trading system, which covers about 40 per cent of the EU's greenhouse gas emissions, stipulates that European industries and energy companies should cut emissions by 62 per cent by 2030 compared to 2005 levels, compared to a target of 43 per cent under the previous rules. To ensure a level playing field, member nations also agreed in December to introduce a tax on foreign companies that want to import products which don't meet the climate-protection standards wi

Environmental groups have started legal action against the European Union's executive branch in a bid to block a move to include natural gas and nuclear power generation on a list of sustainable activities. The list proposed by the European Commission drew fierce criticism and accusations of greenwashing. On Tuesday, Greenpeace said that it was filing a lawsuit at the European Court of Justice, the top EU court, after the commission refused to reconsider its move. Greenpeace is asking the European Court of Justice to declare the inclusion of fossil gas and nuclear "as invalid." Separately, ClientEarth, WWF's European Policy Office, Transport & Environment (T&E), and BUND are challenging only the decision to include gas. They say the fossil fuel can't be considered sustainable because of its adverse environmental impact. The green labelling system from the European Commission defines what qualifies as an investment in sustainable energy. Initially, it didn't initially include ..

He was here on an official visit to hold discussions with leaders and the private sector on ways to further enhance trade and investment ties between the countries. The minister also went to Paris for the India-France business summit. Goyal said that Italy and France have offered unstinted support for the early conclusion of negotiations for the India-EU trade agreement. During the meetings in Italy and France, he said, India has emphasised about the different economic conditions and per capita income in the two regions. But the kind of business opportunities which India provides for EU businesses are huge and "nobody can provide those in the world", he added. "Keeping all this in mind, we would do the FTA... Comments by French President Emmanuel Macron over Europe's priorities on Taiwan have raised questions over the EU's relationship with both the US and China, on the eve of his planned speech on the bloc's sovereignty in The Netherlands. Macron's remarks were published on Sunday in an interview with French newspaper Les Echos and Politico Europe. The question we need to answer, as Europeans, is the following: is it in our interest to accelerate (a crisis) on Taiwan? No," Macron was quoted as saying in the interview. "The worst thing would be to think that we Europeans must become followers on this topic and take our cue from the US agenda and a Chinese overreaction. The comments were made on Friday, before China launched large-scale combat exercises around Taiwan that simulated sealing off the island in response to the Taiwanese president's trip to the US last week. Macron spoke to reporters on his way back from a three-day state visit to China, where he spoke at length with Preside
