A fire broke out in the Common Central Secretariat (CCS) building here on Saturday morning, prompting authorities to rush 15 fire tenders, a DFS official said. The Bombay High Court on Tuesday ordered the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to pay Rs 50 lakh each as compensation to the kin of eight victims who died in a fire at a hotel in 2015, citing its gross failure in the discharge of its duties. A fire broke out at a 14-storey residential building in Mumbra area of Maharashtra's Thane district in the early hours of Sunday, civic officials said. There was no report of any casualty, they said. The Sheel fire station reported the blaze at 2.54 am to the disaster control room. The fire originated in an electric duct between the fourth and seventh floors of the A-wing of S K Residency building located near Mumbra bypass, Thane Municipal Corporation's disaster management cell chief Yasin Tadvi said. "The fire was limited to the electrical cable duct and did not spread to any residential flat. No casualty was reported from the site," he said. At least five workers sustained burn injuries in a mishap at the Steel Authority of India Limited's (SAIL) Bokaro Steel Plant, an official said on Tuesday. The incident occurred at the Steel Melting Shop-2 (SMS-2) of Bokaro Steel plant where a spillage of hot metal from a ladle took place. "As per normal practice, water was sprayed to cool the spill, which resulted in the generation of a large volume of steam. All five workers came into contact with the steam and suffered burn injuries. They were rushed to Bokaro General Hospital where medical treatment was provided to them," the spokesperson told PTI. All are safe and have been discharged, he said. The official said that an internal inquiry is underway to determine the root cause of the spillage, whether due to mechanical failure or other factors. A second man was charged Tuesday over a series of fires that targeted properties linked to UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, police said. The Telangana government has asked five departments, including fire and police, to go into the devastating fire in a building that left 17 people dead and submit a report, state Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar said on Monday. The officials of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), fire, police, revenue department and the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) would jointly probe the tragedy and submit a report to the government, Prabhakar, in-charge minister for Hyderabad, told PTI. A massive fire broke out in the library of Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce in northwest Delhi's Pitampura on Thursday morning, the Delhi Fire Services (DFS) said. "A short circuit in the library's server triggered the fire, extensively damaging hundreds of books in the section that housed old books. Five people, including two children, were killed when a private bus caught fire in the Mohanlalganj area here early Thursday, police said. They said the incident occurred around 5 am on Kisan Path, a major roadway on the outskirts of Lucknow. According to sources, the bus was carrying 80 passengers. Assistant Commissioner of Police (Mohanlalganj) Rajneesh Verma said the bus was en route to Delhi from Begusarai in Bihar when it suddenly caught fire. Days after the Kolkata hotel fire that claimed the lives of 14 people, the KMC on Friday ordered the closure of all rooftop restaurants in the city. Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) Mayor and Municipal Affairs and Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim said all the rooftop restaurants will have to be shut down to ensure unhindered access to premises in case of an emergency. "A roof, being a common space, cannot be sold for commercial purposes," he said. Asked if the authorities will use force to shut down the rooftop restaurants in Kolkata immediately, Hakim said, "We are issuing notices to them for immediate closure of restaurants on rooftops and shifting such eateries to lower floors of a building or other places. The owner and the manager of the central Kolkata hotel, where a devastating fire killed 14 people, were arrested on Thursday, police said. Akash Chawla, the owner of Rituraj Hotel, and manager Gaurav Kapoor were taken into custody in the morning, they said. A suo motu case was registered at the Jorasanko police station under various sections of the BNS, including 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), and the West Bengal Fire Services Act against them, they added. Police said 12 of the 14 bodies recovered from the hotel were identified and their post-mortem examinations completed. These bodies have been handed over to their families, they said, adding that efforts were underway to ascertain the identities of the remaining two bodies. There were 88 guests in 42 rooms of the six-storey budget hotel, located in Mechhua in the congested Burrabazar area, when the fire broke out at 8.10 pm on Tuesday.
