Sweden to throw off shackles against Slovakia at Euro 2020

Sweden is promising a more expansive approach against Slovakia at the European Championship. That won't be difficult. Against Spain in their Group E opener, the Swedes had only 15% possession the lowest figure on record in the history of the tournament. In terms of passes, they had 161 compared to Spain's 917. Sweden coach Janne Andersson will say the game plan of hunkering down, defending deeply and compactly, and then attempting to hit on the break worked. After all, the final score was 0-0 a satisfactory result against the team regarded as the best in the group and Sweden arguably created the best two chances of the game, for strikers Alexander Isak and Marcus Berg. "If there's something that we are among the best in the world at, it's accepting a sacrificial game," Sweden midfielder Albin Ekdal said. That won't be accepted Friday, though, when they play a less possession-based opponent in Slovakia, a team cut from a similar cloth to Sweden in terms of defensive rigidity an

Denmark's Eriksen to be fitted with implanted heart monitoring device

Christian Eriksen will be fitted with an implantable device to monitor his heart rhythm, the Danish soccer federation said Thursday. Eriksen is recovering in a Copenhagen hospital after suffering cardiac arrest during Denmark's game against Finland at the European Championship. The Danish federation said doctors have determined that Eriksen needs to have an ICD implantable cardioverter-defibrillator. This device is necessary after a cardiac attack due to rhythm disturbances, the federation said in a statement. Christian has accepted the solution and the plan has moreover been confirmed by specialists nationally and internationally who all recommend the same treatment. We encourage everybody to give Christian and his family peace and privacy the following time. An ICD monitors a person's heartbeat and can send electrical pulses to restore a normal rhythm if necessary. Netherlands defender Daley Blind still plays professionally with an ICD. He had one fitted after being diagnosed

Home field not an advantage for Spain so far at Euro 2020

Home-field advantage wasn't much of an advantage for Spain at the European Championship. Spain is one of nine teams hosting matches at Euro 2020, but playing in Seville didn't seem to help much on Monday in a 0-0 draw against Sweden. Not only didn't the result go Spain's way, but the team also had to deal with poor field conditions and even boos from the home fans. It's much better to play when the fans are applauding than when they are jeering, Spain midfielder Pedri Gonzlez said. But I prefer to focus on the applause of the fans who motivated us. That will help us a lot more than if we focus on the negative things. More than 12,000 fans were at La Cartuja Stadium for the match against Sweden, and most were supportive of the national team. They proudly honored the national anthem and loudly chanted some players' names. But many grew unhappy and didn't hide their discontentment as Spain struggled to capitalize on its scoring opportunities. Most of the jeers were directed at strik

Denmark ready to ''show who we are'' vs. Belgium at Euro 2020

For Denmark, it's time to somehow focus on soccer again at the European Championship. Five days after Christian Eriksen's collapse against Finland, the Danes will return to Parken Stadium on Thursday to face top-ranked Belgium in their second Group B game. It promises to be an emotional return for a team that is still processing Saturday's incident and has spent the last few days just figuring out how to feel OK about playing a game again. But with Eriksen recovering well, and telling his teammates they should re-focus on the Euro 2020 tournament, Denmark coach Kasper Hjulmand said the players are able to move forward with a clean conscience. We are ready to show who we are once again, Hjulmand said. We showed it on the pitch (and) off the pitch Saturday. And again Thursday we will show who we really are, and how we play, and how we fight. They are also ready for a very special atmosphere at Parken Stadium. About 25,000 fans will be allowed in amid loosened pandemic restrictions

Ukraine, North Macedonia need points after Euro 2020 losses

Both Ukraine and North Macedonia conceded late goals in their opening matches at the European Championship, and both lost because of them. The teams will next play each other at Euro 2020 on Thursday, knowing another loss just might end their chances of advancement. The top two teams in each of the six groups advance to the round of 16, along with the four best third-place teams. Ukraine managed to recover from two goals down against the Netherlands in Amsterdam on Sunday, but Denzel Dumfries headed in an 85th-minute winner for the Dutch. We come back after 2-0 down and it's so frustrating to lose a game in the last minutes, said Ukraine captain Andriy Yarmolenko, who scored one of his team's goals. We have two more games to go and we will still play with the same energy, he said. If we (advance), then it will be great. North Macedonia, one of the two tournament newcomers at Euro 2020 along with Finland, had been holding Austria to a 1-1 scoreline before substitutes Michael ...

Brazil keeps search for striker against Peru at Copa America

Brazil coach Tie has hinted he'll continue searching for his ideal strike force in Thursday's Copa America game against Peru. Tite tested Everton Ribeiro, Everton and Gabriel Barbosa up front at practice on Tuesday instead of Lucas Paquet, Richarlison and Gabriel Jesus, who started in Brazil's 3-0 win over Venezuela in the tournament opener on Sunday. Roberto Firmino, who was on the bench against Venezuela, didn't participate in the practice game in the time while the Brazilian soccer confederation broadcast training to the media. The coach also tried a change in defense with Thiago Silva replacing Marquinhos as Eder Militao's partner and a defensive midfield duo with Fabinho joining Fred in place of Casemiro. Tite has said the 20 days of Copa America will be used to test some things, with an eye the World Cup in Qatar next year. He and his players publicly said they were against the Copa America taking place in Brazil during the COVID-19 pandemic but would always answer the call f
