Compounds in coffee, cocoa may cut heart disease risk

Scientists have identified compounds found in coffee, cocoa and wine, that may reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases, a study has found. The research by Kjeld Hermansen of Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark suggests that there is an association between the consumption of polyphenols and a reduction in cardiovascular diseases prevalence. Coffee is one of the main sources of polyphenols in the diet. The compounds naturally occur in the beverage and contribute to its unique flavours and aromas. In recent years there has been growing academic interest in the role of polyphenols in health through their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. The research found that polyphenols may have a range of cardio protective functions but the precise mechanisms are not yet fully understood. It is suggested that they may alter cholesterol absorption and the processing of fats in the body, and reduce inflammation.

Childhood anxiety may up alcohol use disorders later

Children and teenagers who suffer from anxiety may be at an increased risk of developing alcohol use disorders in later life, a study has found. According to the research published in the journal Addiction, about 43 per cent of associations were positive, meaning that anxiety was associated with a higher likelihood of later alcohol use disorders. However, 11 per cent of associations were negative, with anxiety being associated with a lower likelihood of later alcohol use disorders. Approximately 30 per cent of associations were equivocal and 15 per cent were unclassifiable based on the information reported. Researchers noted that it is important to establish which anxious individuals consume more alcohol and develop alcohol use disorders in order to develop targeted interventions. "The evidence from prospective cohort studies is suggestive but not conclusive of a positive association between anxiety during childhood and adolescence and subsequent alcohol use disorder," said lead ...

Females birds live longer when they have help raising offspring

Female birds age more slowly and live longer when they have help raising their offspring, according to a research. Studying the relationship between ageing and offspring rearing patterns in the Seychelles warbler, researchers at UK's University of Sheffield found that females who had assistance from other female helpers benefitted from a longer, healthier lifespan. The findings help explain why social species, such as humans, which live in groups and cooperate to raise offspring, often have longer lifespans. "It is well understood that one of the benefits of having relatives' help to raise offspring is that this improves the survival of the young," said professor Terry Burke, from the University of Sheffield's Department of Animal and Plant Sciences. "We have now shown that as parents age they decline in their ability to care for their offspring, but having helpers compensates for this effect, allowing the parents to continue to reproduce successfully into old age," Burke said. The ...

Here's a common link between Sleep and aging

As part of a recent study, researchers have found oxidative stress as the common link between sleep and aging. The research suggests that oxidative stress leads to sleep and is also believed to be a reason why we age. It is also seen as a cause of degenerative diseases."It's no accident that oxygen tanks carry explosion hazard labels: uncontrolled combustion is dangerous. Animals, including humans, face a similar risk when they use the oxygen they breathe to convert food into energy: imperfectly contained combustion leads to "oxidative stress" in the cell. This is believed to be a cause of aging and a culprit for the degenerative diseases that blight our later years. Our new research shows that oxidative stress also activates the neurons that control whether we go to sleep," explained Gero Miesenbock, lead researcher of the study. The team studied the regulation of sleep in fruit flies - the animal that also provided the first insight into the circadian clock nearly 50 years ago. Each ..

Study finds a promising combination for common paediatric brain tumour

A new study has found a new combination treatment for children suffering from brain tumour. The treatment aimed at resistant and recurrent low-grade gliomas slowed tumour growth and killed tumour cells in laboratory and mouse models.Paediatric low-grade glioma is the most common brain tumour in children and can often be treated with surgery alone. However, some patients have tumours in locations that make surgery too risky, such as near optic nerves or in the mid-brain area, or have their tumours grown back after surgery. The findings of the research were published in Neuro-Oncology Journal.Researchers at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Centre and the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine combined carboplatin, a standard chemotherapy drug that works well against these brain tumours, and everolimus, which blocks an enzyme called mTOR that was shown in earlier research to fuel the growth of these tumours. The combination increased DNA damage and cell death in laboratory ...

Emilia Clarke reveals she went through 2 life-threatening brain surgeries

In a shocking revelation on Thursday, 'Game of Thrones' actor 'Emilia Clarke' opened up about suffering from two brain aneurysms that nearly took her life. She revealed that the surgeries were difficult and so was her recovery. She also mentioned that these health issues started in 2011, soon after wrapping filming on the HBO show's first season, and that she was with her trainer when she felt a severe headache."My trainer had me get into the plank position, and I immediately felt as though an elastic band was squeezing my brain. I tried to ignore the pain and push through it, but I just couldn't. I told my trainer I had to take a break. Somehow, almost crawling, I made it to the locker room. I reached the toilet, sank to my knees, and proceeded to be violently, voluminously ill. Meanwhile, the pain -- shooting, stabbing, constricting pain -- was getting worse. At some level, I knew what was happening: my brain was damaged."Recalling the incident, Clarke said that she remembers a woman

Excess hormones may cause condition leading to blindness in women: study

Increased levels of hormones including testosterone could cause a brain condition that may lead to blindness in women, according to a research. Scientists at the University of Birmingham carried out the research which explores the role of hormones known as androgens in the way Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH) develops. The IIH is caused by high pressure in the brain with consequences from blindness to incapacitating daily long-term headaches. IIH was originally identified over 100 years ago yet the cause of the condition has remained unknown, although there has been much speculation about why more than 95 per cent of total incidence is in women with obesity. "For over 100 years the cause of IIH has been unknown. These findings mark a key step forward; for the first time we have found a pattern of androgen dysregulation that is unique to IIH and potentially a driver of abnormal brain pressure in people with the condition," said corresponding and senior author of the study ...

Tea Board working on shrinking govt support: Bezbaruah

Tea Board of India was working on a shrinking government support with total allocation being approximately Rs 250 crore, an official said. "Tea Board is working under the backdrop of shrinking government financial support. The Board also labours under the burden of high administrative costs, with more than Rs 70 crore per year being spent on employees and maintenance of infrastructure, out of a total allocation of approximately Rs 250 crore", non-executive chairman of the board P K Bezbaruah told PTI. Thus, he suggested, one of the focus area of the Board over the next few years would be to reduce administrative costs by upto Rs 10 crore per annum, while many cost cutting initiatives were already on the anvil. "In my opinion, the thrust areas of the Board relating to the tea industry should be on exports through incentivization of exportable variants of tea, like orthodox, organic and speciality teas." The Board should attempt to get the incentive for production of such

Sports can have anti-depressant effects in preteen children

As part of a new study, researchers have linked participation in team sports to less depression in boys aged 9 to 11.Adult depression has long been associated with shrinkage of the hippocampus, a brain region that plays an important role in memory and response to stress. Now, the new research has linked participation in team sports to larger hippocampal volumes in children and less depression in boys ages 9 to 11."Our findings are important because they help illuminate the relationships between involvement in sports, a volume of a particular brain region and depressive symptoms in kids as young as nine," said Lisa Gorham, lead author of the study published in the Journal of Biological Psychiatry: Cognitive Neuroscience and Neuroimaging."We found that involvement in sports, but not non-sport activities such as music or art, is related to greater hippocampal volume in both boys and girls, and is related to reduced depression in boys," Gorham asserted. These relationships were ...

Eating breakfast with parents linked with positive body image for teenagers: Study

A family that eats together, stays together, and now, according to a recent study, consistently eating breakfast as a family can also promote positive body image for children and adolescents. The study suggests that parents hoping to raise teenagers with positive body image might just find helpful tools in the kitchen every morning."We know that developing healthy behaviours in adolescence such as eating breakfast every day and eating family meals can have long-term effects into adulthood. Children and adolescents are under a lot of pressure from social media and pop culture when it comes to physical appearance. Having a healthy relationship with food from eating breakfast and spending meal time with family might have a significant impact on well-being," said Virginia Ramseyer, one of the lead researchers.Researchers analyzed data from more than 12,000 students in more than 300 schools in all 50 states and Washington D.C. They looked at data related to eating behaviours, including ...
