A new study, published in The Lancet Oncology journal estimates there are almost 4 lakh new cases of cancer annually, while current records only count around 2,00,000.The new study model makes predictions for 200 countries and estimates that undiagnosed cases could account for more than half of the total in Africa, South Central Asia and the Pacific Islands.Speaking about the study, lead author Zachary Ward said, "Our model suggests that nearly one in two children with cancer are never diagnosed and may die untreated."Ward further added, "Accurate estimates of childhood cancer incidence are critical for policy makers to help them set healthcare priorities and to plan for effective diagnosis and treatment of all children with cancer. While under-diagnosis has been acknowledged as a problem, this model provides specific estimates that have been lacking."The new model developed for this study, the Global Childhood Cancer microsimulation model, incorporates data from cancer registries in .

A new research has found that blocking two molecular pathways that send signals inside cancer cells could stave off oesophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC), the most common oesophageal malignancy in the United States. The study was conducted at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. Researchers identified the pathways using advanced computational and genetic analyses of tumour biopsies from EAC patients. They found 80 percent of tumours had unusually active genes related to two specific pathways, and that exposing the cells to pathway inhibitors stymied EAC tumour growth in mice. The results of the study, published in Gastroenterology point to two signaling pathways (controlled by JNK and TGF-beta proteins, respectively) as contributing to EAC tumours. The pathways represent molecular chain reactions that were overactive in patient tumour cells, but not in biopsies from patients with non-cancerous oesophageal conditions, including Barrett's Oesophagus.Harmful effects of these ..

Twins from Brisbane, a boy and a girl, have been identified as only the second set of semi-identical, or sesquizygotic, twins in the world. They are the first to be identified by doctors during pregnancy. The now four-year-old boy and girl are identical (monozygotic) on their mother's side sharing 100 per cent of their mother's DNA, but are like siblings on their father's side, sharing only a proportion of their father's DNA.This is the first case where semi-identical twins were identified on genetic testing while in the womb. It has been reported in The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) by Professor Nicholas Fisk and Dr Michael Gabbett.Notably, sesquizygotic represents a third type of 'twinning' between identical and fraternal (dizygotic)."It is likely the mother's egg was fertilised simultaneously by two of the father's sperm before dividing," said Professor Fisk, who led the foetal medicine team that cared for the mother and twins while based at Royal Brisbane and Women's ...
A new study conducted by The University of Queensland in conjunction with the University of Waterloo, Ontario, has found that after a short session of high intensity interval training (HIIT), growth of colon cancer cells was reduced, and this also increased indicators of inflammation. The fact that exercise may play a role in reducing the growth of colon cancer cells has been published in The Journal of Physiology. For a long time, the focus on exercise has been on the positive changes in the body that occur following a longer period of training. However, these findings suggest that the effects following a single session of HIIT, an exercise regime involving short, high energy bursts are also important.According to the study, the changes following HIIT suggest that repeated exposure to the acute effects of exercise may contribute to the fight against the cancer. These results reinforce the importance of doing regular exercise and maintaining a physically active lifestyle. The study ...

Tobacco plants can be used as 'green bioreactors' to produce a potentially powerful therapeutic that could treat a number of disorders like diabetes, stroke, dementia and arthritis, scientists say. The plants are being used to produce large quantities of a human protein called Interleukin 37, or IL-37. The protein is naturally produced in the human kidney in very small quantities and has powerful anti-inflammatory and immune-suppressing properties, providing potential for treating a number of inflammatory and autoimmune disorders like type 2 diabetes, stroke, dementia and arthritis. "This protein is a master regulator of inflammation in the body, and has been shown in pre-clinical models to be effective in treating a whole host of diseases," said Tony Jevnikar, a professor at Western University in Canada. "The human kidney produces IL-37, but not nearly enough to get us out of an inflammation injury," said Jevnikar. While showing promise in animal models, IL-37's use clinically has ...

Scientists have developed an artificial intelligence tool that cab screen children for foetal alcohol spectrum disorders quickly and affordably, making it accessible to more children in remote locations worldwide. Foetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs) are a group of conditions that can occur in a person whose mother drank alcohol during pregnancy. Problems may include an abnormal appearance, short height, low body weight, small head size, poor coordination, low intelligence, behaviour problems, and problems with hearing or seeing. The tool uses a camera and computer vision to record patterns in children's eye movements as they watch multiple one-minute videos, or look towards or away from a target. It then identifies patterns that contrast to recorded eye movements by other children who watched the same videos or targets, according to the scientists from Queen's University in Toronto, University of Southern California and Duke University in the US. The eye movements outside the ...
Tobacco plants can be used to produce an anti-inflammatory protein that can have powerful therapeutic potential for treating conditions like Type-2 diabetes, stroke, dementia and arthritis, more effectively and at an affordable price, researchers say.
Researchers have developed a new tool that uses Machine Learning (ML) technology to screen children suffering from a type of developmental and neurobehavioural disorder, caused due to alcohol exposure while in the womb, quickly and at an affordable rate.
