Our aim is to take domestic defence production to 100 per cent: Rajnath

India is looking at taking domestic defence production to 100 per cent as dependence on foreign military supplies creates "strategic vulnerability", Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Friday. Singh said this after inaugurating a third production line of Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA)-Mk1A and a second manufacturing facility of trainer jet HTT-40. With opening of the new facility for Tejas jets, the Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) is expected to produce at least 24 LCA aircraft. "There was a time when the country was dependent on other countries to meet its defence needs, and almost 65-70 percent of defence equipment was imported," Singh said in his address "But today, this situation has changed; now India is doing 65 per cent manufacturing on its own soil," he said. "Very soon, we will take our domestic manufacturing to 100 per cent as well," he said. Singh said India's defence export has reached a record Rs 25,000 crore which was less than Rs 1,000 crore few years ago. "

HAL signs SSLV tech transfer agreement with Isro, IN-SPACe, and NSIL

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe), NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), and ISRO on Wednesday signed a technology transfer agreement for the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV). The SSLV is a three-stage launch vehicle designed to place satellites weighing less than 500 kg into Low Earth Orbit (LEO). Under the contract, HAL will absorb the technology in the first two years, followed by a 10-year production phase, the company said in a press release. The agreement grants HAL a non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to the SSLV technology, covering design, manufacturing, quality control, integration, launch operations, post-flight analysis, training, and support. HAL will be responsible for mass production of SSLVs to cater to domestic and global demand, it added. HAL likely to deliver 2 Tejas Mark-1A jets next month: Defence secy

Two Tejas Mark-1A fighter jets are likely to be delivered next month by the state-run aerospace major Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), Defence Secretary R K Singh said on Saturday. Singh also said that the government is likely to ink a fresh contract with HAL for procuring an additional batch of 97 Tejas jets after the delivery of the two aircraft. The Indian Air Force had flagged concerns over delays in the delivery of the Tejas Mark 1A jets under a previous contract. "Hopefully, the first two of those will be delivered with weapons integration by the end of September," Singh said at the NDTV Defence Summit. The defence secretary said about 38 Tejas jets are already in service and another 80-odd are being manufactured. HAL eyes export boost with accessories, indigenised parts: Official

The Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) plans to boost its revenues through focussed efforts on the export of accessories related to aircraft and other platforms, a senior official has said. In an interaction with mediapersons at the HAL's accessories division here on Wednesday, the official also said the platforms and components made by the state-run firm now reach "nearly 30 countries". He emphasised that the HAL is already working with the government to deepen domestic capability across aircraft systems, while endeavouring to widen its export footprint. The defence public sector undertaking (PSU) has plans to ramp up revenues through the export of accessories related to aircraft and other platforms, including Dornier Do-228, he said. HAL denies finalising PwC for R&D benchmarking, says no firm chosen yet

The Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd on Saturday clarified that it has not finalised any consultancy firm to benchmark its Research and Development (R&D) processes. The clarification comes in response to some social media posts claiming that it has selected PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) for the task. "A few posts on social media (X) have falsely stated that HAL has finalised the selection of a consultancy firm, PwC to benchmark its R&D activities," the HAL said in a statement. "HAL would like to state that no firm has been finalized yet for the benchmarking of its R&D processes," it added. Defence PSU Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) on Monday announced that it recorded a revenue of Rs 30,400 crore (provisional and unaudited) for the financial year ending March 31, 2025, compared to Rs 30,381 crore in the previous year. This achievement comes despite a shortfall in the deliveries of the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) and Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH). The LCA deliveries were delayed due to the non-availability of engines, HAL's Chairman and Managing Director, D K Sunil, said. "The ALH delivery schedule was also impacted by the accident in January 2025 and the subsequent grounding of the fleet. However, accelerated deliveries of other products and services helped us maintain our top line," Sunil stated in a release issued by HAL. US' GE Aerospace starts delivery of F-404 engines for Tejas MK-1A jets

American defence major GE Aerospace on Wednesday said it delivered the first of 99 F-404 aircraft engines to the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the Tejas light combat jet programme. State-run HAL is procuring the engines to power the Mk-1A variant of the Tejas jets. In February 2021, the defence ministry sealed a Rs 48,000 crore deal with HAL for the procurement of 83 Tejas MK-1A jets for the IAF. The deliveries were to begin in March last year. However, not a single aircraft has been delivered yet. The start of supply of the F404-IN20 engines by the American aircraft defence major is expected to help the HAL start delivery of the jets to the IAF. Defence sources indicated that delay in the delivery of the engines by GE Aerospace was one of the reasons for HAL to miss the deadline for supply of the Tejas jets to the IAF.
