A controversial Israeli plan to build a cable car to Jerusalem's historic Old City has passed a major hurdle and now only requires government approval. The National Infrastructure Committee on Monday rejected a battery of petitions against the proposed cable car and green lit the contentious project. The estimated USD 55 million project, which is being advanced by the Tourism Ministry, now requires approval by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government in order to proceed. The cable car would ferry tourists from a renovated train station complex in Jerusalem's western half to the Old City in the east. The proposed route spans several verdant valleys and runs past the city's iconic walls. The project has faced vocal protestations from Palestinian residents, environmentalists, urban planners, architects, religious minority groups and others.

The Delhi government has suspended the excise licence of a night club situated inside the complex of hotel Shangri- La's - Eros for various violations, including serving liquor to underage customers, a senior official said Monday. The Shangri- La's - Eros Hotel, however said that the night club is adjacent to the hotel, situated in central Delhi and is a privately managed entity, with separate entrance access and management staff. According to an official, the action was taken after a team of excise department recently made an inspection and found that three night clubs were operating against a single licence. During the inspection, it was also found that three underage persons were being served alcohol following which an FIR was registered. Rouf Ahmed Dar, a Kashmiri tourist guide lost his life while rescuing 5 tourists after their rafting boat capsized in Lidder River in Pahalgam on May 31.Dar's body was fished out the next morning from near Bhawani Bridge at Pahalgam in Anantnag district.Rouf's brother who was on the boat with him during the mishap said the tourists insisted for rafting even after being warned about a rise in the water level. The boat flipped 2-3 minutes after it entered a rapid. Union Minister of State for Tourism and Culture, Prahlad Singh Patel, Sunday said the tourism industry had a huge potential to generate jobs for youths. Addressing a press conference here, Patel said tourism policies would be studied and various possibilities explored to create jobs in this sector. Patel, who represents Damoh Lok Sabha seat, said the Union government had sanctioned four projects under 'Swadesh Darshan Scheme' for Madhya Pradesh between 2015 and 2018. He said the work on the wildlife, Buddhist, eco and heritage circuits was expected to complete soon. "Work is also in progress for 'Omkareshwar development project' under the Prasad Scheme.
