Dates have always been an inseparable part of the holy month of Ramzan, when the faithful break their long hours of fasting with iftar, that is traditionally begun by consuming dates.To meet the growing demands of consumers and offer them more options, many new varieties of dates have been brought into the market of the Hyderabad city during the ongoing month of Ramzan.Local markets in old Hyderabad and other parts of the city are flooded with a wide range of dates. Elephanta festival begins

The "Elephanta Festival" of art and culture, promoted by the Maharashtra government, kicked off at the iconic Gateway of India here Saturday. Inaugurating the festival, state Tourism Minister Jaykumar Rawal said the government was committed to boost tourism in all possible ways. "In the coming days, the Elephanta (island) will get more facilities for tourists. Soon the tourists can travel by a rope way," Rawal announced. The gala event is organised on the Elephanta Island. Elephanta Caves located on the island are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They are a collection of cave temples predominantly dedicated to Lord Shiv. J-K Guv announces Rs 5 lakh ex gratia for deceased tourist guide's kin

Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik Saturday saluted the bravery of the tourist guide who sacrificed his life to save five tourists from drowning in the Lidder river in Pahalgam and announced a ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh to the deceased's kin. Rouf Ahmed Dar, a registered professional rafter, cared little for his life and jumped into the river when the raft, carrying the tourists, overturned near Mawoora after it was caught in a sudden gusty winds. The five people, three locals and a couple from West Bengal, were onboard the raft when the tragedy struck on Friday evening at the rafting point in Pahalgham, 96 km south of Srinagar. Dar's body was fished out of the river on Saturday. A Raj Bhavan spokesperson said the governor saluted the bravery of the tourist guide who lost his life while rescuing tourists from the Lidder river in Pahalgam on Friday and termed him a real-life hero. Tourist guide drowns after saving five lives from Lidder river in Pahalgam

A tourist guide lost his life after saving five tourists, including two foreigners, from Lidder river at the famous Pahalgam resort in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said on Saturday. A Raft capsized at rafting point in Mawoora Pahalgam in the south Kashmir district on Friday after it was caught in sudden gusty winds and all passengers onboard fell in the Lidder river, the officials said. They said a tourist guide -- Rouf Ahmed Dar -- without caring for his own safety, rescued all the tourists from the fast flowing water of the river, but lost his life. "Dar successfully saved five tourists, including two foreigners, in the true spirit of trademark Kashmiri hospitality," the officials said. Search and rescue was launched immediately and teams of state disaster response fund, police and locals, searched till late hours, but had to abandon the search due to darkness, they said. Casino firm staff abuse MLA during anti-encroachment drive

Staff of an off-shore casino allegedly hurled abuse at Congress MLA Atanasio Monserratte Friday when he accompanied civic officials during an anti- encroachment drive. The company had allegedly encroached on a footpath. Workers of the civic body went to the spot Friday to clear it. Mayor Uday Madkaikar and Monserratte were with them. "Suddenly, staff of the casino company arrived at the spot and started abusing Monserratte and others. They tried to disrupt the work," Madkaikar told PTI. Tourist arrivals in Kerala up 6.82 per cent in Jan-Mar 2019

Tourist arrivals in Kerala shot up by an impressive 6.82 per cent during January-March this year, indicating that the state had swiftly overcome the ordeal of last year's devastating floods. During the first quarter, the total number of tourist arrivals (both domestic and foreign) was 46,12,937 as compared to 43,18,406 during the same period in 2018. The domestic arrivals touched 41,90,468 as against 38,77,712 during the corresponding period in 2018, registering an increase of 8.07 per cent, a press release here said. However, the arrival of foreign tourists saw a dip of 4.14 per cent. The total number of visitors from abroad stood at 4,22,469 during the first quarter against 4,40,694 in the corresponding period of the previous year, a fall of 4.14 per cent.
