Mukherjee was the President from 2012 to 2017.The 83-year-old's political career spanned about five decades, during which he held various key posts in the Congress as well as in the governments of Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, P V Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh.Deshmukh, a Sangh ideologue, was a social activist and had been honoured with the Padma Vibhushan earlier.Born in Hingoli in Maharashtra on October 11, 1916, he passed away in Satna in Madhya Pradesh on February 27, 2010.Hazarika, who hailed from Assam, was a playback singer, lyricist, musician. Bharat Ratna for Pranab as he visited RSS headquarters: JD(S) leader

Janata Dal (Secular) leader Danish Ali on Friday said former president Pranab Mukherjee was being awarded the Bharat Ratna as he had visited the RSS headquarters in Nagpur and had described Sangh ideologue K B Hedgewar as the "son of the soil". The JD(S) secretary general also protested the award being conferred on Mukherjee and not on seer Shivakumara Swami of the Siddaganga mutt in Karnataka, who died at the age of 111. Mountaineer Bachendri Pal conferred with Padma Bhushan; Padma Shri for Gambhir, Chhetri

Mountaineer Bachendri Pal was on Friday conferred with the Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian award, while Gautam Gambhir, BajranG Punia and Sunil Chhetri, among others, received the Padma Shri. The government announced names of the Padma awardees 2019 on the eve of the 70th Republic Day. The 64-year-old legendary mountaineer, who became the first Indian woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest in 1984, has been bestowed with the honour for "distinguished service of a high order". Republic Day: 855 police officers awarded for gallantry

Twenty-five police personnel from Jammu and Kashmir and Naxal affected areas in the country are among the 146 decorated for gallantry amongst the total 855 police and paramilitary personal awarded police medals today, ahead of Republic Day.President's Police Medals for distinguished service will be awarded to 74 personnel while 632 personnel will receive the Police Medal for Meritorious Service.President Ram Nath Kovind will hand over the awards to the men and women from various state police and central police force and organisations in a ceremony on January 26.Three President's Police Medal for Gallantry have been awarded to CRPF personnel, an official statement said.Among the 146 personnel receiving the police medals for gallantry, 41 are from CRPF, 26 from Odisha Police, 25 from J-K Police, 14 from Chhattisgarh Police, 13 from Meghalaya, 10 from Uttar Pradesh, eight from BSF, four from Delhi, three from Jharkhand and one each from Assam Rifles and Indo-Tibetan Border Police.

Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) has been awarded the best miniratna PSU in strategic performance (financial category) at the Governance Now Sixth PSU awards. The award, comprising of a trophy, was presented to NRL MD S K Barua by Member of Parliament Manoj Tiwari and veteran actress and social activist Poonam Dhillon at an award function held in New Delhi recently, a NRL release said Friday. Security tightened across Bengal for R-Day celebrations

Security has been beefed up across West Bengal in view of Republic Day celebrations in the state on Saturday, a senior police officer said. The Kolkata Police has increased patrolling at the entry and the exit points of the city, he said. "We do not want to take any chance and have made special security arrangements for Republic Day celebrations tomorrow. These arrangements have been put in place throughout the state since January 20," the officer at the state secretariat told PTI Friday. At all important places in the city, including Victoria Memorial, Kalighat temple, Indian Museum and Metro stations, the vigil has been tightened to ensure safety of people at all circumstances, another police officer said.
