Govt honours 855 police officers for distinguished services
Three constables of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), awarded the President's Police Medal for Gallantry posthumously, were among the 885 police personnel from across the country who were honoured by the government for their distinguished services on the eve of the Republic Day. While the President's Police Medal for Gallantry (PPMG) have been given to three CRPF constables -- Mohammad Yaseen, Borase Dinesh Dipak and Jaswant Singh -- posthumously for sacrificing lives while performing duties, Police Medals for Gallantry (PMG) have been given to 146 personnel, President's Police Medals for Distinguished Service to 74 personnel and Police Medal for Meritorious Service to 632 personnel. Acclaimed Hindi fiction writer and essayist Krishna Sobti died on Friday here at the age of 93 due to prolonged illness, her family said.

Eminent Hindi author and essayist Krishna Sobti died Friday in Delhi, family sources said. She was 93. The author breathed her last in a Delhi hospital this morning, where she was admitted for the last two months, Ashok Maheshwari, a friend and managing director of Rajkamal Prakashan, said. "She was about to complete her 94 years in February, so an age factor was there no doubt. For the last one week she was in the ICU," he said. "Even after being extremely sick, she was very much aware about her thoughts, about what was happening in the society," Maheshwari added. Born in 1925, Sobti was known for writing about issues of female identity and sexuality. She received prestigious awards like Sahitya Akademi, Jnanpith awards and was also offered Padma Bhushan, which she had declined.

HC upholds family court order against divorce for denial of conjugal bliss after 16 yrs of marriage
The Madras High Court Thursday ruled that the refusal of a spouse to cooperate in a conjugal relationship after 16 years of marriage cannot be grounds for granting divorce or dissolution of the marriage. A division bench of Justices R Subbiah and C Saravanan gave the ruling while dismissing an appeal by Krishnaraj of Erode district against the family court order issued on October 2016, declining divorce on that ground. The bench observed that it's not a case of the appellant stating that the marriage wasn't consummated and that the respondent refused sexual intercourse soon after the marriage. The appellant cannot contest after 16 years of marriage that he was denied conjugal bliss and subjected to cruelty, it said, adding he had subjected his wife to cruelty by having an "extra-marital relationship" with his aunt's daughter. Villager hacks woman to death on suspicion she made his son
A 50-year-old villager hacked a woman to death suspecting her to be a witch in Odisha's Mayurbhanj district, police said Thursday. The accused, who suspected that she made his son ill by performing black magic on him, surrendered before the police Thursday and confessed to have killed Suni Singh (55). The incident took place on at Bhumija Sahi village under Moroda police station limit in the tribal dominated district on Wednesday night. Moroda police station inspector-in-charge Yogendra Mallik said the accused has been arrested and body sent for postmortem. "I suspected her to be a witch as my son continued to remain ill. She might be performing black magic on my son," the accused said in his statement to the police. He was arrested and sent to jail in 2013 for misbehaving with the victim for the same reason.

The United States has freed a journalist working for Iran's English-language television station Press TV after 10 days in detention, the channel has announced. US-born Marzieh Hashemi was arrested on arrival at St Louis Lambert International Airport on January 13. A Muslim convert who changed her name from Melanie Franklin, she had reportedly been visiting her ill brother and other family members. Press TV reported her release late on Wednesday. 50% quota for Mantralaya scribes in Maharashtra housing scheme
The Maharashtra government has decided to reserve 50 per cent residences for members of the 'Mantralaya Aani Vidhimandal Vartahar Sangh' in Mumbai under a housing scheme of the MHADA, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced Wednesday. Fadnavis made the remarks here at an award function, when he conferred lifetime achievement award to veteran journalist Dinu Randive among others. The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) is a state-run agency. Speaking at the event, Fadnavis said the government has tried to give "stability" to the fourth pillar of democracy, the media, in the past four years and listed decisions his dispensation has taken in this regard.
