3 dead after unidentified vehicle hits motorcycle in UP's Hardoi

Three men were killed Tuesday after the motorcycle they were travelling on was hit by an unidentified vehicle in the district, police said. Rajendra (45), Mansaram (40) and M Ram (38) were killed on the spot in the mishap that took place in Baghauli village of Hardoi district in the early hours, they said. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem, police said. The matter is being probed and efforts are on to identify the vehicle which hit the motorcycle, they said.

Mortal remains of jawan killed in Pulwama encounter consigned to flames in Rajasthan

The mortal remains of Army Havildar Sheo Ram, who was killed in an encounter with terrorists in the Pinglan area of Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district, were consigned to flames with full military and state honours here Tuesday. His four-year-old son lit the funeral pyre amid chanting of slogans in support of the Indian Army and against Pakistan. Soldier Welfare Minister Pratap Singh and Health Minister Raghu Sharma attended the funeral at Sheo Ram's village Tiba Basai in Jhunjhunu district. People in large numbers were present in the funeral and paid tributes to Sheo Ram who was among four Army personnel who laid down their lives in an encounter with terrorists in Pulwama on Monday. Thousands pay homage to Maj Dhoundiyal in Dehradun

Thousands of people on Tuesday paid their last respects to Major Vibhuti Shankar Dhoundiyal, who died fighting terrorists in Pulwama in Jammu and Kashmir, at his residence in Dehradun. His mother Saroj, a cardiac patient, his wife Nikita Kaul, whom he had married less than a year ago, and a host of relatives and friends were crying inconsolably as Major Dhoundiyal's coffin was kept for people to pay their last respects before being taken to Haridwar for the last rites. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat placed a wreath on the coffin amid cries of "Shaheed Dhoundiyal Amar Rahein" and "Vande Mataram". People had climbed to rooftops and also stood on either side of the road leading to the officer's residence. W E B Griffin, prolific military novelist, dead at age 89

W E B Griffin, the prolific and best-selling author of military novels, has died at age 89. Griffin, whose real name was William E. Butterworth III, died Feb. 12. His death was confirmed Monday by his publisher, Putnam, which did not immediately provide additional details. Himself a military veteran who enlisted in the Army when he was just shy of 17 and later served in the Korean War, he wrote more than 200 books under W E B Griffin and various other names and sold millions of copies. His many popular series included "Badge of Honor," ''Clandestine Operations" and "Presidential Agent." "Kissing sailor" in iconic NY picture dies age 95

The sailor pictured kissing a woman in Times Square as people celebrated the end of World War II has died at age 95, his daughter told the Providence Journal. George Mendonsa had a seizure Sunday after falling at an assisted living facility in Middleton, Rhode Island, his daughter Sharon Molleur said. In the famous image, one of four taken by Alfred Eisenstadt for Life magazine, Mendonsa is seen ecstatically bending over and kissing a woman in a white nurse's uniform. The picture was published by Life as "V-J Day in Times Square." Mendonsa, who served in the Pacific during World War II, was on home leave when the picture was taken. He had long claimed to be the sailor in the picture, but it wasn't confirmed until recently with the use of facial recognition technology. Uttarakhand Finance Minister almost faints during budget speech

Uttarakhand Finance Minister Prakash Pant almost fainted twice while reading his budget speech in the state Assembly on Monday. During his budget speech, Pant fell over the microphone but was helped by fellow members in the House. He resumed reading the speech after regaining consciousness but again began feeling uncomfortable. Pant was extended medical assistance and offered a glass of water. He rested for a while in his chair as Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat finished the rest of his speech. However, the Finance Minister soon began feeling better and even briefed the media about the budget after the House was adjourned for the day.

UK's Hunt says Brexit talks in 'crucial final period'

British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt says Brexit talks are entering a "crucial final period" but that an agreement can be sealed before Britain leaves the European Union on March 29. Hunt told reporters Monday that "there is a way through this. We know how we can get a majority in Parliament" in the U.K., with less than six weeks to go before Brexit. Speaking at a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels, Hunt said that "what we need is trust and vision on both sides."
