A 19-year-old captive lioness, one among the two surviving at the famed Safari Park in Neyyar Dam near here, died following age-related ailments. Named as 'Sindhu', the lioness died Friday evening, zoo authorities here said. It had been suffering from health issues for some time, they said adding the health condition of the other lioness, Bindhu, was also not too good. The only male lion left in the Park, located about kms away from here, had died three years ago. Established in 1985 at the Neyyar Dam campus, the Lion Safari Park, a first of its kind initiative in the state, has been a major tourist attraction in the region. The picturesque park had over 15 lions. As their number had exceeded in the later years, the male lions were sterilized by the authorities. The long-drawn efforts to bring more lions to the park is yet to achieve any desired result.

Police in Freeport, Texas, tweeted details of Thursday's ceremony for Abigail Arias (AR'-ee-ahs). Chief Ray Garivey (gar-ee-VAY') had learned of Abigail's interest in law enforcement and swore her in. Abigail has Wilms' tumor, a type of childhood cancer that starts in the kidneys. Abigail wore a custom-made police uniform and stood on a stepladder as she raised her right hand while the police chief administered the oath. Officials say a hiker in Pennsylvania's Poconos Mountains was attacked by a rabid raccoon and defended by his dog, who pulled the varmint off. A spokeswoman for the Delaware Water Gap Recreation Center says the raccoon "came out of nowhere" and lunged at the 60-year-old man's legs. Kathleen Sandt tells LehighValleyLive.com it was muddy where the man was hiking and he fell and was bitten several more times by the raccoon. She says the man's black lab named Fasha jumped into action, pulling the animal off the owner and immobilizing it. The dog, named after dog in the Arlo Guthrie's song "Alice's Restaurant," wasn't harmed in the Jan. 28 attack. The raccoon carcass tested positive for rabies. The man received treatment.

As many as 75 elephant deaths were reported in the country last year of which 48 died of electrocution, the government told the Lok Sabha Friday. To a query raised in the lower house of Parliament on elephant deaths, the environment ministry said that 48 wild elephants lost their lives after being electrocuted and 13 died in train accidents till December 2018. The number of elephant deaths in 2018 was lower compared to 2017 when 105 elephants died with 66 of them being electrocuted, the ministry said. According to the government, five elephants were killed in poaching incidents in 2018, which was 10 in 2017. A total of 75 elephants died in 2018, it said, adding a total of 373 elephants have died between 2015 and 2018. Mahesh Sharma, Minster of State in the environment ministry told the Lok Sabha that inquiries have been conducted into death of wild elephants and FIRs have also been lodged. The government also said that 227 people were killed by wild elephants in 16 states last year. ..

Her to-be-born daughter Rylei Arcadia Diane Lovett was diagnosed with anencephaly, a rare condition in which an infant is missing parts of the brain or skull.Doctors gave 23-year-old Davis and her boyfriend Derek Lovett the news that Rylei would not live for more than 30 minutes after birth.Speaking to People magazine, Krysta said that it was definitely "shocking."Doctors gave Davis two options: induce labour immediately or carry the baby to term and donate the child's organs."[The doctor] said babies with anencephaly don't tend to survive birth let alone cord-cutting. The government has decided to award the best-performing states and Union territories under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) for implementation and innovation. It comes at a time when around 15 lakh houses have been constructed so far against the target of about one crore houses under the PMAY (U) between 2015 and 2022. In a statement, the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry said that the awards are aimed at enthusing states and Union Territories (UTs) to perform better and make the dream of house for millions a reality within the decided period. According to the ministry, few special category awards to give recognition to states and UTs for innovative technology in construction, community mobilisation, slum redevelopment, policy initiatives, project monitoring among others have also been instituted. Honouring late A P J Abdul Kalam, the Tamil Nadu government Friday announced it would set up a new arts and science college named after the former President in his native town of Rameswaram. The college will be established next year, Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam announced in the state budget for 2019-20 presented in the assembly. "I am glad to announce that this government will establish a new arts and science college at Rameswaram during 2019-20, which will be named after Dr APJ Abdul Kalam," he said. Kalam, who was the President from 2002 to 2007, used to love interacting with student community and had collapsed and died while delivering a lecture at the IIM-Shillong on July 27, 2015. His body has been buried in Rameswaram, where he did his primary schooling.
