MiG-29's additional fuel tank dislodges during training, falls in forest

An additional fuel tank of a MiG-29 aircraft of the Indian Air Force (IAF) got dislodged during a training session on Monday, and fell in a forest area near the Kalaikunda base in West Bengal's Paschim Medinipur district, a defence official said. There was no loss of life or damage to property as a result of the incident, he said. The MiG-29 aircraft was on a routine training mission. "While returning to Kalaikunda airbase, ventral drop tank which is used to carry additional fuel got dislodged and fell into an uninhabited forest," the defence official said. The drop tank was being brought to the Kalaikunda airbase in coordination with the civil administration, he said. An investigation was started to find out the cause of the incident, the official said.

IAF working on phasing out remaining three squadrons of MiG-21 jets

The crash of a MiG-21 jet in Rajasthan's Hanumangarh on Monday has once again put the spotlight on the Indian Air Force's aging fleet of Soviet-origin aircraft which have been involved in around 400 accidents since their first induction in the early 1960s. Three people were killed after the MiG-21 fighter aircraft crashed into a house in Hanumangarh in Rajasthan shortly after it took off for a routine training sortie from the Air Force Station at Suratgarh. The MiG-21s used to be the mainstay of the IAF for a long period of time. After its induction in the early 1960s, the Indian Air Force procured over 870 MiG-21 fighters to boost its overall combat prowess. However, the aircraft has a very poor safety record. According to official data, the MiG-21s were involved in 400 crashes in the last six decades. India on Friday wrapped up 'Operation Kaveri', launched to rescue its nationals stranded in crisis-hit Sudan, with the transport aircraft of the Indian Air Force making its final flight to bring 47 passengers home. India launched Operation Kaveri on April 24 to evacuate its nationals from Sudan, which has witnessed deadly fighting between the country's army and a paramilitary group. With the arrival of the Indian Air Force C130 flight on Friday, 3,862 people have been moved out of Sudan through Operation Kaveri, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said. The Indian Air Force operated 17 flights and the Indian Navy ships carried out five sorties to move Indians from Port Sudan to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, he said. Cope India 2023 concludes with aerial manoeuvres by Indian, US fighter jets

A dazzling display of aerial manoeuvres by fighter jets of the air forces of India and the US, including Rafales, Tejas and the F-15E on Monday marked the end the 15-day Cope India joint air exercise at Kalaikunda in West Bengal's Paschim Medinipur district. A total of 24 fighter aircrafts, eight transport planes and two force multipliers from both air forces participated in the event that started on April 10, IAF Group Captain Neeraj Jhamb said.
