K'taka polls: Most exit polls miss mark, one gets scale of Cong win right

Most exit polls missed their mark in predicting an outright win for the Congress in the Karnataka assembly polls though some of them got that aspect right with only India Today-Axis My India forecasting the scale of win correctly. Interestingly, it was senior Congress leader DK Shivakumar whose prediction that the Congress would win at least 141 seats in an interview to PTI earlier this week was very close to the actual figure of 135 that his party has won. In the results declared Saturday, the Congress won 135 seats while the BJP ended up with 65. The JD(S), the third player in the contest, won 19 seats in the 224-member assembly, while two seats were won by Independents, two were won by regional parties. Counting was still on in one seat, where the Congress was leading. In its exit poll released after the voting on May 10, India Today-Axis My India predicted a clear majority for the Congress with 122-140 seats and gave the BJP 62-80 seats. It gave 20-25 seats to the JD(S). News .

Will fulfil 5 pre-poll guarantees in first cabinet meeting: Siddaramaiah

Senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah on Saturday said the incoming government in Karnataka would not only give its stamp of approval for the five pre-poll guarantees announced by the party in the first cabinet meeting itself but also pass an order to this effect immediately. He also said the mandate given by the people is to give a pro-people administration and not for "enjoyment". "The five guarantees we have given will be approved in the first cabinet meeting and we will then pass an order," the former Chief Minister said addressing a press conference here. The Congress has promised to implement 'guarantees' 200 units of free power to all households (Gruha Jyoti), Rs 2,000 monthly assistance to the woman head of every family (Gruha Lakshmi), 10 kg of rice free to every member of a BPL household (Anna Bhagya), Rs 3,000 every month for graduate youth and Rs 1,500 for diploma holders (both in the age group of 18-25) for two years (YuvaNidhi), and free travel for women in public ...

1st time in 4 decades, Cong wins assembly poll in home state of party chief

The Congress' big win in the Karnataka assembly polls has come as a boost for Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge as it is also the first time in nearly four decades that the party has won in the home state of its president. The Congress would also take inspiration from history as it was from Karnataka that an embattled Indira Gandhi had revived her dwindling political future by winning a Lok Sabha bypoll from Chikmagalur. The Congress is facing a stiff electoral challenge from a rampaging BJP and the Karnataka poll win has come at a critical juncture for the grand old party with the Lok Sabha polls next year, but whether this victory would prove to be its "Chikmagalur moment", only time will tell. "It is an extraordinary result for the Congress party in Chikmagalur district which had become a BJP bastion of late. It won all 5 of the 5 seats there. In 1978, Chikmagalur heralded the revival of @INCIndia nationally by electing Indira Gandhi. History will soon repeat itself!" Congress ..

Karnataka polls: BJP accepts people's mandate with humility, says Nadda

BJP president J P Nadda on Saturday said his party accepts the mandate of the people of Karnataka with humility and it will continue raising their voice by playing the role of a constructive opposition. The Congress returned to power on its own in Karnataka after 10 years, knocking the BJP off its only southern perch on Saturday as voters decisively backed the grand old party desperately seeking electoral revival ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. In a tweet, Nadda thanked those who voted for the party in the Karnataka Assembly polls and workers of the BJP's Karnataka unit for their efforts. "The BJP accepts the mandate of the people of Karnataka with humility. I thank the diligent karyakartas of @BJP4Karnataka for their efforts and the people who showed faith in our vision," he said. "Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji, the BJP will continue to work for the betterment of the people and raise their voice by actively playing the role of constructive opposition,"

Amid poll defeat in Karnataka, BJP retains its hold in coastal districts

Even as the ruling BJP was defeated in the Karnataka Assembly elections, the party retained its traditional stronghold in the coastal region by securing victories in 11 of the 13 constituencies in the twin districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi. The Congress crossed the 113-seat mark in the election, the majority required to form the government, in the 224-member Assembly for which counting of votes took place on Saturday. Karnataka spells 'beginning of the end' for BJP, says Mamata Banerjee

The Karnataka electoral results are the beginning of the end for BJP, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee claimed on Saturday. Banerjee also asserted the moral of the Karnataka assembly poll results is that people want plurality and that no central design to dominate can repress them. Congratulating people in Karnataka for their mandate in favour of change, the TMC supremo said that brute authoritarian and majoritarian politics has been vanquished. She forecast that the safforn party would lose in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, too, where it faces off with the Congress, which steamrolled the BJP in Karnataka in results announced on Saturday. "This is the beginning of the end of the BJP before 2024 Lok Sabha polls. People have voted against the arrogance and intolerance of the BJP. I think the saffron party will also lose the upcoming elections in Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, Banerjee told newspersons gathered in front of her house, after seeing off actor Salman Khan w

AAP national convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday congratulated the Congress for its victory in the Karnataka assembly elections, and said the BJP should now realise that its tactics do not work anymore. He, however, sought to downplay AAP's dismal performance in the elections, saying a time will come when it will win in Karnataka as well. According to the Election Commission website, AAP appeared to have drawn a blank, securing just 0.58 per cent of votes. Kejriwal hailed his party candidate Sushil Rinku's victory in the Jalandhar Lok Sabha bypoll in Punjab, terming it "historic and unprecedented". "Congratulations to them," the chief minister told reporters at the party headquarters here when asked to comment on the Congress' victory in the Karnataka elections. I take full responsibility for the defeat, says Karnataka CM Bommai

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Saturday said he will take full responsibility for the BJP's defeat in the Assembly elections, and that the party will function as a responsible opposition in the days to come. He said Congress' "much organised" election strategy might have been one of the major reasons for its win. "Election results are in the final stages, I accept the mandate of the people with utmost respect. I take responsibility for this BJP's defeat, no one else has the responsibility. As the chief minister of the state I take the responsibility. There is a need to do the complete analysis of this defeat, as there are various reasons for this," Bommai said. Speaking to reporters here, he said the party will analyse the performance in every constituency in detail.
