Singhvi slams Pakistan for raising Kashmir at SAARC video-conference

Senior Congress leader Abhishek Singhvi slammed Pakistan on Sunday for raising the Kashmir issue during the SAARC nations' video-conference on coronavirus, saying the country deserved to be "quarantined" by the global community. Pakistan used the SAARC nations' video-conference on coronavirus on Sunday to raise the Kashmir issue, with the country's State Minister of Health Zafar Mirza calling for an immediate lifting of the "lockdown" there to allow virus containment measures. "Pakistan can't stoop lower than this. During a humongous humanitarian crisis, it sends a junior minister for SAARC meeting of heads of state. Then raises Kashmir issue in the meeting out of nowhere. Pity," Singhvi said in a tweet. The neighbouring country deserved to be "quarantined" by the global community, he added. Congress spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill tweeted, saying, "Pakistan raising Kashmir issue during 'SAARC fights Corona' meeting reflects their 'petty, poor & pathetic' standard of governance ...

Schools open and no students, everything 'normal' in J&K: Chidambaram

Senior Congress leader and former home minister P Chidambaram on Monday hit out at the Centre over the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, alleging that there was a "new normal" in place. "Everything is normal in J&K. Schools open, no students. Everything is normal in J&K. Internet shut down once again," Chidambaram said. "Everything is normal in J&K. Mehbooba Mufti's daughter under house arrest. She asks why? No answer," he said. "If you are wondering what is going on, please understand, this is the new normal," he added. Jammu and Kashmir was placed under an unprecedented security cover and curfew-like restrictions on August 4, a day before the Centre revoked the state's special status under Article 370 and bifurcated it into two union territories, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.

Article 370: Jammu and Kashmir to be largest UT, followed by Ladakh

Jammu and Kashmir will be the largest union territory (UT) in the country in terms of area once it is carved out, following the Centre's move to bifurcate the state. Ladakh, will be the second largest UT after it comes to force. The government on Monday revoked Article 370 which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir and proposed that the state be bifurcated into two separate union territories of Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. This provoked outrage from the National Conference and the PDP and triumph from leaders of India's ruling BJP. There has been a long pending demand from a section of people of Ladakh to turn it into a union territory. With the addition of two new UTs, its total number will go up to nine -- J&K, Ladakh, Delhi, Puducherry, Diu and Daman, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Chandigarh, Lakshadweep and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Currently, only two UTs -- Delhi and Puducherry -- have Legislative Assemblies. With the addition of Jammu and Kashmir, the number will go up
