Three-tier security deployed for counting of votes in Jammu's Kathua

A day ahead of the counting of votes for the Jammu and Udhampur Lok Sabha constituencies along with rest of the country, three-tier security has been activated in and around the counting centres in the two districts. The counting of over 23.94 lakh votes in these constituencies, scheduled for Tuesday, will determine the fate of 34 candidates, including senior BJP leader and Union Minister Jitendra Singh, current Jammu MP Jugal Kishore Sharma and former ministers Choudhary Lal Singh and Raman Bhalla of the Congress. "All arrangements are in place for the June 4 vote counting. Three-tier security has been implemented," said Returning Officer and Jammu District Magistrate Sachin Kumar Vaishya. Rohingya Muslims demand release from 'holding centre' in J-K's Kathua

Lodged at a "holding centre" here for the past over two years, over 200 Rohingyas from Myanmar on Tuesday held a protest and clashed with guards inside Hiranagar sub-jail demanding their release, official sources said. However, a senior police officer dismissed the protest as "normal", saying they are holding protests for the past one month for their release from the centre. A total of 271 Rohingyas, including 74 women and 70 children, are lodged at the sub-jail that was notified as a "holding centre" on March 5, 2021, for lodging illegal immigrants. The official said the protest inside the holding centre broke out when a woman fell sick in the morning. "Senior police and jail officials rushed to the scene and the situation is under control," he added. The sources said police used mild force to disperse the protesters who reached near the main gate of the facility. 23 injured as vehicle overturns in J-K's Kathua, 5 in serious condition

At least 23 people were injured on Sunday when their vehicle overturned in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said. The injured were rushed to sub-district hospital Basohli where the condition of five of them is stated to be "serious", police officials said. The victims were returning home from a temple in a load carrier when the accident took place near Kashid village in the Basohli area in the evening, they said. The driver lost control while negotiating a curve and as a result the vehicle overturned, the officials said.
