Five people have died and seven others taken ill at a village in Shamli district since yesterday allegedly after consuming spurious liquor, police said today. After the incident was reported, five policemen -- including Bidoli police outpost in-charge Sub-Inspector KP Singh and four constables -- were suspended for negligence in duty, police said. Shamli Additional Superintendent of Police Shalok Kumar said the incident happened at Kamalpur village under Jhanjhana police station, which is near the Uttar Pradesh-Haryana border. While three deaths occurred yesterday, two persons died today, he said. The seven people who fell ill allegedly after consuming the spurious liquor have been taken to different hospitals for treatment, but they are in serious condition, he said. A 35-year-old citizen of Laos was detained by the CISF at Jaipur International Airport (JIA) for trying to smuggle 1.5 kg gold worth Rs 45 lakh into the country, an official said. The accused, Vatsna Sangphachan, was detained on suspicion after his arrival from Bangkok and later 1.5 kg gold was recovered from his shoes, he said. The accused cannot speak English and his phone call records are being investigated, the CISF official said, adding that the gold has been seized. Sangphachan has been handed over to the customs officials for further investigation into the matter, he said.

Lalminthang Vaiphei, the self styled 'commander-in -chief' of USRA was shot dead in front of zonal education office, Churachandpur town, they said. Motive behind killing of the USRA leader was not known, police said adding that a case has been filed at Churachandpur police station for further investigation. A teenage boy has been arrested for reportedly raping his 5-year-old cousin in Huzoorpur police station area here, police said today. Manish (18) took the victim on the pretext of a motorcycle ride yesterday. He drove to a secluded spot and allegedly raped her, SP Sabharaj said. The accused later returned with the minor who was in a serious condition and threatened her family to hush up the matter. He, however, fled the scene when the girl's condition deteriorated, the officer said. An FIR was lodged by the victim's father and the accused was arrested, police said, adding that the girl has been admitted to the district hospital.

Special court judge Devendra Kumar Pathak delivered the judgement against Bigu Ram yesterday. A fine of Rs 15,000 was also imposed on him. As per the case that was registered with the Anti-Corruption Bureau, Palamau, Ram had demanded a bribe of Rs 10,000 from a road construction firm to clear its outstanding amount. The Anti-Corruption Bureau officials arrested Ram while he was accepting the bribe on June 22 last year.
A court here has sentenced a Maoist cadre to two years and three months in jail under Arms Act. The 1st class Judicial Magistrate, Rajendra Prasad, sentenced the Maoist Chotan Yadav yesterday. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 and if he failed to cough up the amount, the convict will have to serve six months more in jail. Yadav was arrested on January 21 last year along with a firearm and live ammunition from Mohammadgunj by a special police team.
