Two Trump lieutenants found guilty, president implicated

Donald Trump stood accused of conspiring to commit campaign fraud and two of his closest aides faced jail time, after court proceedings that delivered a legal and political one-two punch to his embattled presidency. In a drama that played out simultaneously across two US cities yesterday, two key aides each faced eight separate charges stemming from a federal investigation into the 2016 presidential election. In New York, Trump's long-time attack-dog fixer Michael Cohen pled guilty to eight counts including making illegal campaign contributions. In a sensational twist he pointed to the president as a coconspirator. Cohen pled guilty to illegally making pre-election hush payments, including to porn star Stormy Daniels, who says she had an affair with Trump. But as part of a plea deal Cohen said he acted "in coordination and at the direction of a candidate for federal office." "I participated in this conduct with the purpose of influencing the election," a visibly crestfallen Cohen told

Ex-Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort guilty of 8 charges

Paul Manafort, the longtime political operative who for months led Donald Trump's winning presidential campaign, has been found guilty of eight financial crimes in the first trial victory of the special counsel investigation into the president's associates. A judge declared a mistrial on 10 other counts the jury could not agree on. Yesterday's verdict was part of a stunning one-two punch of bad news for the White House, coming as the president's former lawyer, Michael Cohen, was pleading guilty in New York as part of a separate deal with prosecutors. The jury returned the decision after deliberating four days on the charges of tax evasion and bank fraud against the former Trump campaign chairman. The outcome almost certainly guarantees years of prison for Manafort and established the ability of special counsel Robert Mueller's team to persuade a jury of average citizens despite months of partisan attacks including from Trump on the investigation's integrity. The verdict raised ...

Victims sue, allege 'turf war' behind Canada Indian restaurant bombing

Victims of a May bombing at an Indian restaurant near Toronto have alleged in a civil lawsuit that a "turf war between rival business associates" led to the attack. Six of the 15 victims in the blast are seeking a total of CAD 6 million (USD 4.6 million) from the owners of the Bombay Bhel restaurant for "severe and permanent injuries," saying in court documents that the proprietors "knew or ought to have known that it was targeted directly for bombing." Their lawyer Darryl Singer told a press conference yesterday that the restaurant owners "ought to have been more alert to protecting their patrons." He declined, however, to provide details about the source of the information, and the allegations must still be proven in court. The eatery in a Mississauga, Ontario strip mall that is surrounded by houses, grassy fields and condominium towers under construction was popular among local Indo-Canadians. There was no initial confirmation of the plea deal reported by several media including NBC News and The New York Times, or of the specific charges involved, but Cohen was set to appear in Manhattan criminal court at 4 pm (2000 GMT). CNN reported that the deal includes prison time for the president's long-time fixer, who played a behind-the-scenes role in making hush payments to women who claimed to have had affairs with Trump. The development came on the same day as a former Trump campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, faced a fourth day of deliberations in his tax evasion and bank fraud trial. A Cohen guilty plea would avoid a high profile trial, but also could require him to cooperate with investigators probing whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia in its ...
