The Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) will launch a massive demolition drive against illegally constructed buildings here from tomorrow even as it has so far demolished 27 such structures. In the drive starting tomorrow, the GDA will seal and demolish the illegally constructed and dilapidated buildings, authority sources said. Vice chairperson of GDA and district magistrate Ritu Maheshwari said 650 buildings have been identified and they would be sealed by the authority and Nagar Nigam by the end of this month. A married woman was strangled to death by a jilted lover here after she turned down his proposal to marry him, police said on Sunday, adding that the accused has been arrested.
A 32-year-old farmer allegedly committed suicide today by drinking pesticide in Krishnapur village near Yavatmal, police said. The family members of the deceased, identified as Prakash Nikhade, claimed that he was frustrated since he had lost cotton crop on four acres of land due to flood this monsoon. They also alleged that the farmer was denied fresh crop loan by a bank. However, the police said the cause behind Nikhade taking the extreme step is being investigated. A Shirpur police station official said they have registered a case. The incident occurred this evening at the house of the farmer in the village in Wani taluka, he said. His family members rushed him to Wani rural hospital, where he died during treatment, the official said. Nikhade is survived by his mother, pregnant wife and a minor daughter.

A 32-year-old man was today arrested for hurling a petrol bomb at his wife's house here, allegedly irked over receiving a divorce notice from her, police said. Police said the accused Saravanan of Tuticorin, who got married in February this year, was an alcoholic and frequently quarrelled with his wife. Unable to put up with the torture she was subjected to by Saravanan, his wife had filed for a divorce recently, they said. Last night, Saravanan had gone to his wife's house in Vannarapettai here in an inebriated state and allegedly hurled a petrol bomb on it. Two motor cycles parked in the house were damaged in the fire, police said. However, the accused managed to escape even as the people in the neighbourhood gathered. A woman died today after falling in Najafgarh drain near Ghasipura here, police said. The police rushed to the spot and pulled out the body of the woman from the drain with the help of fire brigade. The woman was rushed to a hospital where she was declared brought dead, they said. The deceased is yet to be identified, police said.
Rajasthan's Beawar municipality chairperson Babita Chauhan and her husband Narendra Chauhan, arrested in a bribery case, have been suspended from the primary membership of the BJP. They were arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) for taking bribe of Rs 2.25 lakh on August 8. A middleman was also arrested in the case. Three drug smugglers were arrested here and contraband worth Rs 1 crore in the international market was seized from them, police said today. "The three smugglers were arrested last evening following a tip-off. They were arrested from a location near the Nepal border falling under the Rupaidiah police station. The arrested smugglers are from different parts of Bahraich and have been identified as Babu Manihar, Vasu Pathan and Sufi. Five kilograms of charas, three countrymade revolvers, cartridges and a motorcycle have been recovered from them," Superintendent of Police (SP) Sabharaj said. He added that a case was registered against the accused under various sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, the Arms Act and the Indian Penal Code (IPC). "The seized charas is worth Rs 1 crore in the international market," the SP said.
A woman has been arrested for allegedly killing her younger son by conniving with his elder brother over not wanting to repay a loan taken form a grocery shop owner, the police said today. They said the incident took place in December last year and the woman was arrested yesterday, while hunt is on to nab the other accused. A minor girl has alleged that she was sexually harassed by a teacher in west Delhi's Naraina, police said today. Yesterday, the girl of Salaam Baalak Trust, filed a complaint with the Naraina police station, alleging that she was sexually harassed by the teacher at the institute where she used to go for computer training, a police official said. The alleged incident took place in May, he said. A case was registered and the accused was arrested, police said.

A 21-year-old married woman was allegedly strangulated to death by a man after she rejected his proposal in northwest Delhi's Bhalaswa dairy, police said today. The incident was reported to the police at 2.30 pm yesterday. When the police reached the spot, they found that the woman was allegedly strangulated to death, said Aslam Khan, Deputy Commissioner of police (northwest) The man, identified as 22-year-old Ravi, belongs to Aligarh and was arrested in connection with the case, Khan said. During interrogation, he confessed to killing her and said that he was in love with the woman and she did not reciprocate his love. When she did not accept his proposal, he hatched a conspiracy to kill her, the DCP said. Ravi told police that after her husband left for work, he went to her house and allegedly strangulated her, the officer said. The woman's husband is a vegetable vendor, police said, adding that the accused used to work at a nearby factory.

The SP said that Rajbhar, who was arrested in 2011 in Rohtas district, became a symbol of terror in Rohtas and Kaimur districts after being released on bail in 2014. A man who was brought to Bagh police station in Madhya Pradesh's Dhar district in connection with an eve-teasing case, allegedly hung himself in the bathroom there, police said today. The man's uncle, however, claimed that he died after being beaten by police. Superintendent of Police Virendra Singh said Sohaib Khan (22) was brought to the police station yesterday evening after a girl alleged that she was teased by her. "The man hung himself in the bathroom yesterday evening. We took him to Barwani hospital where he died while undergoing treatment," the police officer said.
