Malaysian ex-PM Najib hit with new charges over graft scandal

Malaysia's former prime minister Najib Razak was hit with new charges today linked to a multi-billion-dollar financial scandal that contributed to his shock election defeat in May. Looking tired as he appeared in court, Najib was charged with three counts of money-laundering over claims he pocketed 42 million ringgit (USD 10.3 million). He faces up to 15 years in jail for each charge. These are in addition to the charges he faced last month after he was first arrested -- three for criminal breach of trust and a separate count that he abused his position to take the money. He faces up to 20 years in jail for each of those charges. Man arrested for raping minor neighbour in Bengal

A 40-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly raping his minor neighbour at Nadia district of West Bengal, a police officer said. The accused, a worker at a local factory, was taken into custody yesterday after the 14-year-old girl, who lives with her blind parents at Baigachhi village of the district, filed a complaint, he said. The girl's parents begs at railway platforms and train compartments to make ends meet, the officer said. "In the FIR, the teenager alleged that her neighbour had taken her to a nearby brick field on August 1 and raped her. The accused then threatened the girl with dire consequences if she disclosed the matter to anyone. Out of fear, the girl chose to keep the matter to herself," he said. Yesterday, however, when the accused attempted to rape her again at her home, her parents came to her rescue, the officer said quoting the FIR. 2 police officers shot, wounded in New Jersey

Two police officers have been shot in New Jersey. Authorities say the shooting happened around 8:30 pm (local time) in Camden, just across the Delaware River from Philadelphia. The Camden County officers were taken to an area hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening. It's unclear what led to the shooting. It occurred on National Night Out, an event designed to bring local police and the communities they serve together. No arrests have been made and no other information was immediately available.

Malaysia's ex-PM Najib charged with more corruption counts

Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak has been charged with three counts of money laundering related to the alleged multibillion-dollar looting of a state investment fund, adding to his troubles just three months after his stunning electoral defeat. Najib stood calmly in the dock today as the charges were read to him. Last month he pleaded not guilty to abuse of power and three counts of criminal breach of trust. Najib, 64, has accused Malaysia's new government of seeking "political vengeance" and has vowed to clear his name in his trial. Venezuela president ties opposition leader to drone attack

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has accused one of the country's most prominent opposition leaders of being linked to the alleged assassination attempt using drones. Maduro said in a nationally televised broadcast today that statements by suspects already arrested point to Julio Borges, an opposition leaders living in exile in Colombia. It follows a thwarted assassination attempt Saturday when two drones armed with explosives detonated near the president speaking outdoors during a military celebration. Images captured on live television showed Maduro and his wife looking up at the sky at one explosion and then hundreds of soldiers scrambling. Prosecutors say they have arrested six people who face charges of treason, attempted murder and terrorism. Maduro has called on US and Colombian leaders to turn over any suspects.

Argentina ex-Vice President jailed over corruption charges

Former Vice President of Argentina Amado Boudou was sentenced to five years and 10 months in prison by a court on charges of bribery and conducting business incompatible with public office.The court also banned the 55-year-old for life from elective office, reported the Washington Post. Trump ex-lawyer being investigated for tax fraud: report

President Donald Trump's former personal lawyer Michael Cohen, who is under federal investigation in New York, is being investigated for possible tax fraud, The Wall Street Journal reported today. Federal authorities are examining whether Cohen's income -- potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars -- from his taxi medallion business was under-reported in federal tax returns, the newspaper said. The report also alleged that prosecutors were investigating whether employees of Sterling National Bank improperly allowed Cohen to obtain loans for his taxi business even though he failed to provide adequate documentation. 4 arrested in robbery case

Four men were arrested and two minors apprehended in connection with an armed robbery case at west Delhi's Naraina Flyover, the police said today. The accused were identified as Shambu (32), Jitender (28), Monu (23) and one Raju, they said. On August 2, one Kashish Bansal, a resident of Rohini was going to Gurugram along with his driver Shambhu in his car to deliver Rs 70 lakh to his brother-in-laws friend Saurab Bansal and Deepak Ghatana. Man arrested for raping 5-yr-old girl

The police have arrested a man who allegedly raped and killed a five-year-old girl last week here, an official said. The girl's body was found stuffed in a bag on the roof of a house in a locality here, police said. The incident took place on August 2. Senior Superintendent of Police Vaibhav Krishna said the girl was missing since Thursday and her father had lodged a missing report at the Khoda police station. The next day, her body was found in a gunny bag on the terrace of his elder brother's house, the officer said. Following a tip-off, the man was arrested today. He has been identified as Deepak Singh, a taxi driver, the SSP said. He used to live in the same area as that of the girl. The incident occurred when his wife had gone to her parental house, police said. Finding the girl alone, Singh raped her. He strangulated her to death after she raised an alarm, the SSP said. Tytler video clip case: Police registers case against DSGMC chief Manjit Singh

Police have registered a case against Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee (DSGMC) president Manjit Singh GK on a complaint by Congress leader Jagdish Tytler, the police said today. The Congress leader, an accused in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case, had filed the complaint at Kapashera police station in south west Delhi in February, accusing Singh of circulating a "doctored" video clip. Based on the complaint, a case was registered a couple of days ago on the directions of a city court. In a press conference in February, Singh had released a video clip of a purported sting operation recorded in 2011, showing Tytler in conversation with a few people. CBI to probe Deoria case; one missing girl found in Gorakhpur

The Uttar Pradesh government today recommended a CBI inquiry into the Deoria shelter home case, involving possible sexual abuse of the inmates, hours after a girl missing from there was found at an old age home run by the same NGO in Gorakhpur. Earlier, the UP Women and Child Welfare Minister Rita Bahuguna Joshi admitted there had been laxity at the district level in not shutting down the Deoria shelter even after a closure order last year. Five people who were involved in running the Gorakhpur shelter have been detained. Police said the girl from the Deoria shelter should not have been at the Gorakhpur home, as it is meant for the elderly.
