Manipur: Senior army official accuses his unit behind custodial killings, extortion

Wife of Lieutenant Colonel Dharamvir Singh has moved to the Manipur High Court claiming that her husband was wrongly detained by armed jawans on July 1 morning and was kept under house arrest till the court ordered his release.Ranju Singh on July 20 submitted an affidavit with the court on behalf of her husband highlighting possible reasons behind latter's arrest.Notably, Lt. Col. Singh was serving as officer commanding, 3 CISU at M Sector, Imphal when he was allegedly arrested."He was taken away by the officials in front of me. 5 held in robbery case

Five men were arrested in connection with a robbery case at northeast Delhi's Usmanpur area, the police said today. Four country-made pistols, 12 live rounds of different bores, one improvised .32 bore pistol, Rs 1.6 lakh robbed cash and two stolen motorcycles -- used in crime -- were recovered from them, they added. The accused have been identified as Arif (34), Anil (27), Asif (23), Salman (26) and Abdi (28), the police said. On July 16, police were informed that a few bike-born men opened fire and fled. On reaching the spot, they were told by one Narender Aggarwal, a resident of Kartar Nagar, who works in a Multi-National Company as a distributor, that when he was going to his office on his motorcycle with his colleague Sushil Kumar, they were intercepted by two bike-borne men who robbed them of Rs 11 lakh at gunpoint. Two slit man's throat over love triangle, held

A 26-year-old man's throat was allegedly slit by two men, over a love triangle, the police said today. The accused were arrested within 12 hours of the incident being reported, they added. On July 27, the police were informed about an injured man lying in Sector 19, Dwarka. He was taken to a hospital where he was unable to speak but he wrote his name as Kamal Singh Yadav, a native of Banda in Uttar Pradesh, the police said. Police analysed the call detail records of the victim's phone and it was found that he had come to Delhi on July 25 from Gujarat. It was found that the victim was in touch with a woman, who works as a maid in Dwarka Sector 10, they added. She told the police that Yadav was her phone friend and had come to meet her from Gujarat. Woman aborts journey to Dubai after learning her unscrupulous travel agent has been booked

A woman, who was soon going to take up a job of domestic help in Dubai, decided against taking her flight at the last hour from here today when police told her that the travel agents sending her abroad were unscrupulous and a case has been registered ahainst them. Simranjit Kaur, mother of three children, was to board a flight for Dubai from the international airport here. Woman held for kidnapping step-children in southwest Delhi

A woman allegedly kidnapped her husband's two children from his first marriage to win his affection, the police said today. The incident was reported from southwest Delhi's Vasant Vihar, they added. The police were informed yesterday around 2.25 pm by one Sonia that her two-year-old daughter and five-year-old son have been kidnapped. Later, she received a call from Reena, her husband's second wife, they added. "Reena asked Sonia to abandon her husband or else she would not return her children. On the basis of the number Reena had used to call Sonia, she was traced to Uttam Nagar and arrested," a senior police officer said. The two children were reunited with their mother. 2y-yr-old girl kidnapped by man rescued

A two-year-old girl, allegedly kidnapped by a man, was rescued, the police said today. The incident came to light on July 29, after a woman, who was waiting in the main hall of Ajmeri Gate of the New Delhi Railway Station, complained that her daughter had gone missing, a police officer said. Subsequently, she informed the Railway Protection Force staff at the Baggage Scanner machine, who immediately flashed the message on Walkie Talkie to all the staff on duty. Police found a man moving suspiciously with a baby girl near the auto stand at Ajmeri Gate. Subsequently, he was detained. The accused had been taken into custody, the police said. A case has been registered. Further investigation is underway, they added.

Man kills self in Delhi's Rohini

A 26-year-old man allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself today at the residence of the woman he wanted to get married to in Vijay Vihar area of Rohini, the police said. Naveen went to the woman's house with a country-made pistol in his hand. When the woman saw him with a pistol in his hand, she ran away towards her mother who was on the first floor, they added. While she was upstairs, she heard a single gunshot. Naveen allegedly shot himself in the chest, police said. He was rushed to the Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital where he was declared brought dead, they said. No suicide note was found at the spot but police suspect that the man was depressed after the woman turned down his marriage proposal. He had asked for the woman's hand in marriage but her mother had refused, following which he was depressed, the police said. Further investigation is underway and the body has been sent for post-mortem, they added.

Five members of gang of robbers arrested from Vasant Kunj

Five members of a gang, wanted in connection with several cases of robbery and car-jacking, were arrested from south-west Delhi, police said today. The arrested accused -- Yogesh Sharma, Devender, Amit Sehrawat, Giriraj Singh and Praveen -- were members of the Nandu gang, headed by Kapil Sherawat, Devender Arya, DCP (southwest), said. The accused, who were travelling in a stolen car, were stopped by the police at Kishangarh village near Vasant Kunj around 8.30 pm yesterday. They tried to escape by hitting a barricade and pointing weapons at the police personnel, the officer said. However, the police personnel managed to overpower them, he said, adding that a semi-automatic pistol, two country-made pistols, 10 live cartridges and the stolen car were seized from them. Miscreants open fire at 2 men, decamp with Rs 40 lakh

Two employees of a retail pharmacy chain were injured after unidentified miscreants allegedly shot at them and robbed them of Rs 40 lakh in northwest Delhi's Wazirpur today, police said. Police were informed at 12.37 pm about the incident. Two employees of Sanyog Enterprises Private Limited, identified as Tejpal and Rajkumar Bhasin, were going in a car with Rs 40 lakh cash, which was to be deposited to a State Bank of India (SBI) branch in Wazirpur, the police said. On the Wazirpur flyover, their car was hit by another car. When Tejpal and Bhasin came out, they were shot at by the occupants of the other car, who fled the spot with the cash, the police said. Guard shot dead, bag containing cash looted in daylight near VVIP zone in Lucknow

In a sensational daylight robbery, a gunner of a cash van was shot dead and a bag containing around Rs 7 lakh case was snatched away by an unidentified miscreant only a couple of kilometres away from the Raj Bhavan in the high-security VVIP zone in the state capital here, giving fresh ammunition to the opposition parties to target the Uttar Pradesh government on the law-and-order front. A woman sub-inspector was suspended today for allegedly extorting Rs five lakh from a resident of Muni-ki-Reti area here after threatening to frame him in a false case. The order to suspend Sub-Inspector Deepa Rani with immediate effect was issued by ADG (Intelligence) Vinay Kumar. A complaint had been lodged against Deepa Rani and two others on July 27 at Muni-ki-Reti police station by Rishikesh resident Sanjeev Pandey, who runs Vedansha Institute of Vedic Sciences and Alternative Medicine at Tapovan. Man rapes minor, kills her mother for putting up resistance

A man allegedly raped a minor girl while killing her mother as she tried to save the daughter at a remote village in Bhadrak district, police said today. The incident happened yesterday at Talasitha village when the minor girl and her mother were in their house, Inspector-in-Charge of Dhamnagar police station Bandana Patra said. The girl in her complaint to the police has alleged that the man, a resident of the same village, killed her mother and raped her last night when the two were alone, Patra said. Angry mob thrashes man: Police

An angry mob thrashed a man, garlanded him with shoes and paraded him through the main market of Ghansali in Bhilangana block of the district after it learnt that he had taken a 16-year-old girl of another community to a hotel room. The people became angry when they came to know that 18-year-old Azad Alvi had taken the girl of another community, hailing from Bhilangana block, to a hotel room in Ghansali, SSP Yogendra Singh Rawat said. A protesting mob gathered at the hotel pulled the girl out of the room and beat up the man, he said. TN man in ISI case convicted for terrorist act under UAPA

An NIA court here today sentenced a 43-year-old man to five years imprisonment under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act for involvement in terror activities. Mohammed Saleem, one of the accused in the NIA's Zahir Hussain ISI spy case of 2014, was also convicted under and the IPC for criminal conspiracy and circulating counterfeit Indian currency and sentenced to two years imprisonment. The sentences for offences under the UAPA and IPC would run concurrently. "This is a case which clearly shows that Pakistani officials based in Sri Lanka were directly involved in furthering terrorist acts and circulation of counterfeit currency in India and engaging people for such activities," Public Prosecutor for NIA cases C S S Pillai told PTI. When the case came up today in a Special Court for NIA Cases at Poonamallee, Judge K V Senthur Pandian convicted Saleem under Sections 16 (punishment for terrorist act) and 18 (punishment for conspiracy) of UAPA, and sentenced him to undergo five years .
