Two alleged liquor smugglers have been arrested in Uttar Pradesh's Shamli district and 20 cartons of alcohol worth over Rs 1.5 lakhs were seized from them, police said Saturday. The two men, Bhim Singh and Krishan Malik, used to allegedly smuggle liquor from Haryana to UP, police said. They were arrested on Friday after their car was intercepted on Karnal-Meerut Highway near Titoli Check Post in the district, said Station House Officer Karamvir Singh. They are being interrogated and further investigations are underway, he added.
Eight persons were arrested on the kidnapping charge here, Kavi Nagar police said Friday. The complaint in this regard was given by one Lalit Kumar, who alleged that his younger brother Nirdosh Rana (21) was abducted on June 19. Kumar alleged that next day, he received a call for a ransom of Rs 5 lakh, police said. Police also recovered two cars, which were allegedly used in the crime. SP (City) Shlok Kumar said the accused told them that six months ago, Nirdosh and two others-- Manoj and Ajit--had taken Rs 65 lakh from them on the pretext of arranging a job for them in a post office and the Rapid Action Force. Thereafter, we forced him to call Nirdosh Rana from his phone to come at the Vaishali Metro station and abducted them to recover the money," Sunil, one of the accused, told police.
A nurse was arrested on Friday for allegedly torturing an ailing old woman whom she was attending for the last four months in southern Kolkata's Gangulybagan area, police said. Sanjukta Paik was arrested by Patuli police station officers after the family members of 85-year-old Sukumari Saha lodged a police complaint and submitted CCTV footage purportedly showing the nurse beating the ailing lady, they said. The family members had installed a CCTV camera in the room of the old lady after noticing black injury marks on her face and body. The octogenarian's son Uttam Saha told PTI, "We had taken her to a doctor thinking that the marks could be because of some illness. But despite giving her medicines, those marks remained. We then found that it was the nurse who was beating her brutally every day. We have submitted CCTV footage to the police along with our complaint." An SUV driver allegedly assaulted a woman employee at the Kherki Daula toll plaza on the Delhi-Gurgaon expressway Friday Morning, police said. The incident took place at 8.50 am, when the driver of a black Scorpio, identified as Manjeet Singh, a resident of Shikohpur village, refused to pay toll tax. "When she asked Manjeet to pay Rs 60 in toll tax, he punched her and said he was a local don and never paid toll tax here," Subhash Bokan, a PRO of the Gurgaon police said. A team of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday questioned jail officials here in connection with a case in which former MP Ateeq Ahmed is accused of kidnapping and assaulting a real estate dealer inside the prison.The probe agency had last week registered an FIR against Ahmed and others on the charges of abduction and assault on real estate dealer Mohit Jaiswal in December 2018.The CBI checked the jail records and quizzed the prison officials who were on duty when the alleged incident took place.In a complaint, Jaiswal had claimed that on December 26, 2018, aides of former MP Atiq Ahmad forcibly took him to Deoria jail where Ahmad along with his son and 10-12 other miscreants were present, who forced him to transfer four of his companies to people associated with the former Samajwadi Party (SP) leader."I was thrashed inside the jail by the accomplices of Atiq Ahmad. A highly decomposed body of a man was Friday found in a gutter in Maharashtra's Palghar district, police said. It seems the man was killed and then his body stuffed in a plastic bag and shoved into the gutter in Tulinj in Nalasopara, an official said. "A case has been registered. A man was killed and three others were injured when a speeding car ran over them early Friday when they were sleeping on the roadside in southeast Delhi's Nizamuddin area, police said. The Madras High Court Friday said a rape victim need not approach the medical board or the judiciary to terminate her pregnancy provided its length has not exceed 20 weeks. Disposing of a criminal original petition from a victim, Justice N Anand Venkatesh said in all cases of unneeded pregnancy suffered by a victim, she need not be referred to the medical board if the length of pregnancy does not exceed 20 weeks. "The termination of pregnancy can be done as per the provisions of Section 3 of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971. The victim girl should not be unnecessarily made to knock the doors of this court," he said in his order. Two men were arrested for allegedly supplying illegal arms and ammunition to criminals in the national capital and western Uttar Pradesh, police said Friday. The accused have been identified as Akhilesh Kumar (40), a resident of Etah district, and Kunwar Pal (29), a resident of Mainpuri district, they said. Police got a tip-off on Wednesday that Kumar, along with his associate, would come near Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital, Kalyanpuri here for the delivery of illegal ammunition. It has become a social problem affecting the institution of marriage or family. Therefore, serious thought should be given by both the state and central governments to this issue, it said. A statement issued by the Crime Branch said: "A preliminary enquiry on the written complaint received from one person revealed that the complainant received an SMS informing him that he has won a lucky prize of Rs 12,80,000 and a vehicle from NAPTOL online shopping Pvt. Ltd." The complainant was induced to deposit different amounts in different bank accounts under the garb of different charges, it said. "The complainant deposited an amount of Rs 23,05,588 in various bank accounts of Punjab National Bank provided by the callers who projected themselves to be the employees of NAPTOL online shopping limited and Reserve Bank of India (RBI)," the investigating agency said. A debt-ridden farm labourer Friday attempted suicide after allegedly killing his wife and three children with an axe in Gujarat's Banaskantha district, police said. The incident happened in Kuda village in Lakhani taluka of the district and an official identified the farmer as Karsanji Patel (55). "Patel used an axe to kill his wife Anandiben (50), sons Ukaji (22) and Suresh (13) and daughter Bhavna (22). He then consumed poison and is currently being treated at a hospital in Ahmedabad," said Deputy Superintendent of Police Rishikesh Upadhyay. The Directorate General of GST Intelligence has arrested one person for fraudulently availing input tax credit (ITC) of more than Rs 16 crore on the basis of fake invoices. "The Directorate General of GST Intelligence Hqrs has arrested one person, namely, Munish Kumar, Partner of M/s Sushil Kumar Munish Kumar, Hisar, Haryana and controller of M/s Sushil Kumar Munish Kumar & Co., Ahmedabad," a finance ministry statement said. Both the firms had fraudulently taken ITC to the tune of more than Rs 16 crore involving invoice value of Rs 322 crore on the strength of invoices issued by non-existent fake firms, it said. "The said two firms thereafter, passed on such fraudulently taken ITC to some of the well established cotton yarn spinners who availed of the same to discharge their GST liability against the outward supply with an ulterior motive to defraud the Government exchequer," the statement added. The girl was found lying "lifeless" with her face wrapped in a plastic bag this afternoon inside a washroom of the school located in Ranikuthi area of the city, a police officer said. "There are also some marks of injuries on her left wrist. We are looking into it. The girl's parents have been informed. The body has been sent for post mortem," the officer said.
