Palestinian admits murder of Israeli ex-girlfriend: ministry

A Palestinian man has confessed to killing his Israeli ex-girlfriend, saying the murder was motivated by nationalism, Israel's justice ministry said today. Mohamed Harouf, a resident of Nablus in the Israeli- occupied West Bank, was arrested by Israeli police in August 2017 after the body of Mishal Halimi was discovered. The 30-year-old went missing in May, according to media reports, and a crime of passion was suspected as she had been pregnant and married to another man at the time. "The murderer strangled her while she was carrying a baby in her womb and then stoned her and left her without burying her," said the prosecutor, adding that the two sides had reached a plea bargain. "We have arrived at this agreement to avoid a long trial and we will ask in agreement with the defence for a sentence of life imprisonment," the prosecutor said, quoted in a ministry statement. JNU student alleges misbehaviour by unidentified man

A 28-year-old JNU student has alleged that an unidentified man misbehaved and intimidated her, police said today. The woman is a third year graduation student of French and stays in Ganga Hostel, they said. She alleged that on January 27, when she was roaming near North Gate, Jawaharlal Nehru University, an unidentified man misbehaved with her and when she raised an alarm, he fled, the police said. She saw him running away with four of his friends, they said. On the basis of her complaint, a case was registered and police are on the lookout for the accused, the police said.

DU student alleges sexual harassment by college professor

A 17-year-old girl student of Daulat Ram College has alleged that she was being sexually harassed by a professor following which he was booked, police said today. The victim, a resident of Haryana, was a first-year student of Delhi University, they said. She alleged that the professor would try to touch her inappropriately whenever he found her alone. He would follow her and used to call her to meet him alone, the police said. When she opposed his advances, he threatened to fail her in internal exams, they said. An FIR was registered in the matter on January 31 and further probe is underway, the police said.

Three held for kidnapping, killing man

Three people were today arrested for allegedly kidnapping and killing a man, who went missing since January 20 from Jagatdal area here, police said. The body of the man, Abhishek Chaubey, was found near Bara Mandir Ghat under Khardaha police station on January 30, they said. The arrested trio were all Chaubey's friends and they have confessed to his kidnapping and killing, a senior police officer said. The accused will be produced in a local court tomorrow. Further investigation into the matter was on, the officer said.

Man arrested for impersonating Sena MLA to dupe resort owner

A man who allegedly impersonated Pratap Sarnaik, the Shiv Sena MLA from Ovala Majiwada, and demanded money from a businessman was arrested yesterday, police said. Senior Inspector D S Dhole of Kasarwadavali police station told PTI that the man, posing as MLA Sarnaik, had called up a resort owner and asked for funds for a function. "The arrested accused also told the resort owner that he (caller) was sending a person to whom he should give Rs 51,000," said Dhole. Police said that the resort owner, who grew suspicious, called up Sarnaik himself. Once the resort owner realised that the person who had called him was an impostor, he asked his office staff to keep the person busy when he came to collect the money. The person who visited was detained by the office staff and handed over to the police. Iran sentences suspect to 6 years for nuclear espionage

Tehran's prosecutor-general says a court has sentenced a suspect to six years in prison for relaying information on the country's nuclear programme to a US intelligence agent and a European country. Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi told the judiciary website Mizanonline.ir that the convict allegedly met the agent nine times and provided him with information about "nuclear affairs and sanctions." Dolatabadi added that he provided the information to a European country too. He said the court also ordered the confiscation of the money he received for the information. The report did not identify the convict or provide additional details.

LeT cadre arrested in Delhi

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested a Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) cadre here on Sunday.The arrested worker has been identified as 22- year-old Mahfooz Alam, a resident of Bihar's Gopalganj district.Alam is accused of providing logistic and financial support to another LeT cadre, Naeem, said the NIA.Alma was arrested from Delhi and produced before the NIA Special Court today, which sent him to two-day police custody.In connection with LeT's activities, the investigative agency also conducted searches at two suspected hawala operators in Uttar Pradesh and seized Rs 15 lakh and Rs 32.84 lakh along with some other documents.

Hyderabad: Stolen antique idols worth Rs 3 cr recovered, two held

Hyderabad Police on Sunday recovered three antique idols worth Rs 3 crore and arrested two people on charges of stealing it.The idols were stolen from temples in Telangana's Kamareddy town on January 27.The idols were recovered when a team of the Hyderabad and the Kamareddy police, working on specific information, joined hands and conducted an operation to nab the perpetrators.As per the Hyderabad Police Commissioner, V.V. Srinivasa Rao, the idols were about 600 years old and the accused have been involved in similar such crimes in the past too."Earlier also the accused were involved in stealing of idols from the temples. After stealing they used to go to Karnataka and later come back to Hyderabad to sell them," Rao told the media here.The culprits identified as Shaik Hyder and Shaik Aziza confessed their crime and were later handed over to the Station Head Officer of Kamareddy town Police Station for further investigation.

Property, bank papers linked to Jain found during searches:CBI

The CBI has recovered property documents, bank deposit slips of about Rs 2 crore allegedly linked to Delhi minister Satyendar Jain, and companies where he was director, during searches at the residences of Delhi Dental Council Registrar, the agency sources said. The documents were recovered during CBI searches at the residences of Dental Council Registrar Rishiraj after he was arrested in a separate case yesterday, they said. Reacting to the development, a senior Delhi government official alleged it was an attempt by the Centre to mlign Jain's image and that he had nothing do with the registrar. 2 arrested for land grab

Police have arrested two people for allegedly encroaching upon land of the Ghaziabad Nagar Nigam and slapped provisions of the stringent Gangster Act on them, a senior police officer said today. Leela Dhar and Subhash of Akbarpur-Bahram village were arrested yesterday based on a complaint of land grab filed by the Ghaziabad Nagar Nigam, Deputy Superintendent of Police Manisha Singh said. The complaints named 13 people including Leela Dhar and Subhash. Singh said the duo had obtained a stay on their arrest from the Allahabad High court. Thereafter, the police booked them under the stringent Uttar Pradesh Gangsters and Anti- Social Activities (Prevention) Act, and arrested them. They have allegedly grabbed around 70 bighas of land near Tigri Cut on Yamuna Expressway, according to the complaint. 5 member gang nabbed: Rs 2.61 lakh fake currency seized

A five member gang, distributing counterfeit currency and reportedly with links to a group in Afghanistan, were arrested at Cubum town in the district today and fake Rs 2,000 notes with a face value of Rs 2.61 lakh seized from them, police said. They said one of the gang members, J Ajmal Khan was arrested during routine patrol after he was found carrying fake Rs 2,000 notes. On being questioned, he said that the gang were into the business of distributing fake currency, being printed here by his father and they had links to a group in Afghanistan. Based on this information, Khan's house was raided and the fake currency recovered from there, police said. His father and the other three gang members were later arrested, they said. Police said they were investigating Khan's claim that the gang had links with a group in Afghanistan.

BJP, BJD spar over Koraput rape case

With Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan seeking CBI probe into the alleged gangrape and suicide of a minor girl in Odisha, the ruling BJD accused him of politicising the issue ahead of Bijepur Assembly bypoll. The 14-year-old girl had alleged that she was raped by four "men in uniform" on October 10, last year, in Kunduli area of Koraput district. She had committed suicide on January 22. Pradhan today sought a CBI probe into the case even as BJD spokesman and Rajya Sabha MP P K Deb asserted that there was no need for any help from the central probe agency as a judicial inquiry is on in the case. Mother, daughter killed in explosion in Balochistan

A woman and her daughter were killed in an explosion at their residence in Balochistan's Panjgur area on Sunday.According to the Dawn, the hand grenade accidentally exploded which killed the mother and her daughter and injured her son.Makran Division Commissioner Bashir Bangulzai said the boy found a hand grenade somewhere and took it to his home.It exploded when the boy was playing with the grenade in the Tusp area of Panjgur, Bangulzai added.The boy was rushed to the hospital for medical assistance.An investigation has been launched into this matter.

Woman throws son from 11th floor, jumps off to death: Police

A woman allegedly threw her five- year-old son from the 11th floor of a newly-constructed apartment here and then jumped off the building herself, police said. The mother and son were killed of the fall, Senior superintendent of Police Akhilesh Kumar said, adding Jaya Agarwal (33) took the extreme step after a severe schizophrenic attack. "Jaya along with her husband, Pawan Agarwal, a chartered accountant, and two sons, Parth (7) and Utkarsh (5), visited their newly owned flat. "Prima facie, she suffered a severe psychosis attack there and threw her son from the balcony of the 11th floor of the apartments," he said.
