Thane police have arresteda man for allegedly threatening a local leader of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and trying to extort money from a businessman. Sandesh Shetty, the accused, was arrested Wednesday night, said an official of anti-extortion cell of Crime Branch. A case had been registered with Naupada police on the complaint of Avinash Jadhav, a builder who is Thane and Palghar district chief of the MNS, said inspector Sanjay Shinde. Jadhav told police that one of his friends, a Navi Mumbai-based businessman, had received threats from Sandesh Shetty who was seeking money on behalf of the 'Pujari gang'. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Thursday conducted raids at 12 places in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar in connection with the investigation of Munger Arms Case.The case pertains to recovery of three AK-47 rifles along with other weapons on the disclosure of accused Shamsher Alam from the house of his sister and accused Rizwana Begum. Eight persons were arrested in Botad district of Gujarat Thursday for allegedly killing the husband of a Dalit sarpanch. Manjibhai Solanki (51), resident of Jalia village, was beaten to death on Ranpur-Barvala road in the district Wednesday. His wife Geeta Solanki is the sarpanch of Jalia. Manjibhai himself was a member of the gram panchayat and served as deputy sarpanch. Justice P N Prakash dismissed the criminal revision petition of the MDMK founder challenging the lower court's order refusing to discharge him in the defamation case filed in 2006 on a complaint by then chief minister M Karunanidhi. The judge, however, allowed another petition filed by Vaiko seeking to quash a defamation case filed by the DMK in connection with his speech on the alleged attack on film director Bharathiraja's office in 2009. Jaypee Hospital here was penalised by the Gautam Buddh Nagar administration Thursday for flouting norms on smoking in public place, officials said. A team of experts from the district Tobacco Regulation Committee had carried out a surprise inspection at the hospital in Sector 128 when the violations surfaced, the officials said. The action has been taken in compliance with the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) 2003. According to a statement by the administration, the law prohibits smoking in a public place and calls for compulsory anti-tobacco advertisements in hospitals. "But during the inspection, it came to light that no anti-tobacco advertisements were in place in the hospital while several people were smoking in its parking area," the statement read. "For the violation of Section 4 of COTPA, a notice was issued to the hospital for a total of 150 violations and a penalty of Rs 30,000 imposed on them," it said. NDMC Municipal Secretary Jagdeep Chiller died on Wednesday night, a senior official said. He was 58. "The NDMC's meeting of the House scheduled for today (Thursday) was postponed due to the sudden demise of the municipal secretary," the official said. Chiller, a Delhi resident, had complained of chest pain Wednesday night when he was travelling. The National Investigation Agency has carried out searches at 12 locations in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar including the residence of a former MLC of Bihar in a case of alleged smuggling of Kalashnikov assault rifles from Central Ordnance Depot and supplied to Naxals and criminal gangs, officials said Thursday. The agency had taken over the case after Bihar Police allegedly recovered three AK-47 rifles along with other weapons from the house of main accused Shamsher Alam's sister Rizwana Begum who is also an accomplice, they said. A court here Thursday sentenced BJP leader and former Madhya Pradesh minister Harendrajit Singh Babbu to one year's rigorous imprisonment in a two- decade old case of assault on a police constable. Judge Suresh Singh found Babbu guilty under IPC section 353 (assault to deter public servant from discharge of his duty). The court also imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 on him. He was, however, granted bail after the ruling. Babbu, then MLA from Jabalpur (West), was accused of abusing and throwing a chair at constable R S Pendre at Gohalpur police station in Jabalpur on June 28, 2000. The MLA was angry as his vehicle had been seized by the police, the prosecution said. He was also charged under IPC sections 294 (obscene act) and 147 (rioting), but was acquitted for want of evidence. Babbu later became a minister in the Uma Bharti-led BJP government. A jeweller was shot dead and robbed of his cash and ornaments by some motorcycle-borne assailants here Thursday, police said. Lallu Soni (50) was shot at by some men on the canal bridge while he was going to Babuganj market in the city, Station House Officer (SHO) Baghrai police station Nanhelal Yadav said. The miscreants fled from the spot with the cash and gold and silver jewellery that Soni was carrying with him, the SHO said.
