Illegal poppy field destroyed in J-K's Rajouri

A vast field of illegally cultivated poppy in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district was Monday destroyed by police, an official said. The operation was launched after police received information that Ajaz Ahmed Khan of Suka Kass mohalla in Hayatpura village had cultivated poppy plants (opium) illegally in his agriculture land, they said. A case was registered in the Manjakote police station based on the information and a team headed by Manjakote Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Nisar Khoja, tehsildar Sagheer Chowdhary and SHO Manzoor Kohli reached the spot and destroyed the crop, the officials said. Khan is on the run, they said.

CJI gets clean chit in sexual harassment allegations, woman says "gross injustice" done

Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi Monday got a clean chit from the Supreme Court's In-House Inquiry Committee which "has found no substance" in the allegations of sexual harassment levelled against him by a former woman employee of the apex court. The 3-member Committee, which completed its task in 14 days, proceeded ex-parte as the woman had opted out of the inquiry on April 30 after participating for three days. Immediately after the office of apex court's Secretary General came out with the findings of the committee, the woman issued a press statement saying that she was "highly disappointed and dejected". She said "gross injustice" has been done to her as a woman citizen of India and "worst fears" have come true, and all hope of justice and redress from the highest Court of the land have been shattered. Formal complaint against Arvinder Singh Lovely for organising rally without permission

A police complaint was lodged Monday against Congress' east Delhi candidate Arvinder Singh Lovely for organising a rally in the Vivek Vihar area of Shahdara without requisite permission, officials said. According to a senior police officer, the complaint was about a rally on May 1. A kalandra (formal complaint lodged in case of a non-cognisable offence) was made against Lovely on Monday. The east Delhi constituency comprises Jangpura, Okhla, Trilokpuri, Kondli, Patparganj, Laxmi Nagar, Vishwas Nagar, Krishna Nagar, Gandhi Nagar and Shahdara areas. "Highly disappointed and dejected," said the former Supreme Court employee who levelled sexual harassment allegations against Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, after the In-House Inquiry Committee gave him a clean chit on Monday. Man shot dead by bike-borne youth in Delhi

A person was allegedly shot dead by two unidentified youth on a bike in Delhi's Saket area on Monday."The victim, identified as Prince, was reportedly a bad character of police station Malviya Nagar, with his name involved in two gun-shot injuries. He also had an ongoing enmity with another bad character of police station Aya Nagar", said DCP South Delhi Vijay Kumar.Prince was on his way to a mall in Saket after attending court today when the incident took place, said Kumar.The police officials also said the victim was taken to a nearby hospital by his friends soon after he was shot. CJI gets clean chit from in-house panel, woman complainant 'disappointed, dejected'

A three-judge in-house Committee of the Supreme Court on Monday gave a clean chit to Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi in the sexual harassment complaint allegation levelled against him by a former court staffer who said she was not just highly disappointed and dejected but felt "gross injustice" has been done to her."The in-house committee has found no substance in the allegations contained in the complaint dated 19.04.2019 of a former employee of the Supreme Court of India.""Please take note that in case of Indira Jaising vs. Supreme Court of India and Anr file SCC494, it has been held that the Report of a Committee constituted as a part of the In-House procedure is not liable to be made public," the Supreme Court Secretary-General said in a notice.The notice also said that the Committee submitted its report on Sunday in accordance with the In-House procedure to the next senior most judge competent to receive the report and also sent a copy to the judge concerned namely the Chief .

History-sheeter, 6 others held for Rs 35 lakh gold robbery

Seven persons, including dreaded criminal Ayub Chikna (47), were arrested for allegedly robbing a jeweller of gold ornaments worth Rs 35 lakh in April, police said Monday. According to an official, jeweller Ashok Sakria (57) was attacked with a chopper by four persons near Chinchpokli railway station bridge on April 6 and then robbed of gold ornaments weighing 1.2 kilogrammes. After a case was registered with Kalachowki police station, a probe was launched which led to the arrest of Mohammed Shahtaj Jamal Khan (37) and Maruti Sonawane (46), he said. Their interrogation revealed the robbers were part of history-sheeter Ayub Alimuddin Shaikh alias Ayub Chikna's gang, he said, adding that Chikna's involvement in the crime was also found. Chikna was held from his home in the northern suburb of Dahisar, he said. Police raid Mamallapuram resort, round up 176 for rave party

As many as 176 people, including seven women, were detained for allegedly taking part in a rave party at a nearby resort, where ganja and liquor from Andhra Pradesh were used, police said Monday. A case was registered against three men for possession of a "small quantity of ganja" and nine others for illegally bringing and using liquor from Andhra Pradesh, which is barred under the Tamil Nadu Prohibition Rules, and they have been arrested, Kancheepuram district police officials told PTI. The resort, which was sealed Monday pending inquiry, did not have a valid licence to vend liquor on its premises, the officials said. Use of alcoholic beverages from other states and possession of ganja should also be taken into account and a case was filed against the resort authorities, they said. Man arrested for cheating woman on pretext of getting her study visa for Canada

A 56-year-old man was arrested in Delhi on Monday for allegedly cheating a woman of Rs 11 lakh on the pretext of arranging study visa for Canada, police said. The accused, identified as Harmeet Singh Walia, a resident of Pitampura, was arrested from Netaji Subhash Place while his son Harmandeep Singh Walia has been on the run, they said. The accused were running an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) coaching centre. In her complaint, the woman alleged that she had approached a private coaching institute in June-July 2016 and took classes for 30 days. During coaching, the accused duo got to know about her plans of going to Canada on study visa, Deputy Commissioner of Police (northwest) Vijayanta Arya said. Harmandeep offered to arrange her study visa for Canada within three months but after sometime, the accused learnt that she had applied for the visa through another agency, she said. Delhi airport's duty free shop employee among six held for smuggling gold worth Rs 60 lakh

An employee of Delhi Duty Free shop was among six people arrested by the customs officials for allegedly smuggling gold worth about Rs 60 lakh at the airport here. Customs officials Monday said the smugglers, including the employee of Delhi duty free shop inside the airport, were following a modus operandi based on use of "codeword" with each other. The six were held in separate incidents on Sunday. Giving details of the cases, the officials said two persons were intercepted after their arrival from Riyadh and Abu Dhabi. During enquiry, the duo admitted to carrying 350 grams of gold which was handed over to the duty free shop employee inside a washroom of the airport. Neither the carrier of the gold nor the duty free shop employee knew each other. They were given a codeword -- a pass phrase -- on the day of delivery of gold by their handlers, the officials said. Muzaffarpur shelter home case: SC directs CBI to complete probe on alleged murders by June 3

The Supreme Court Monday directed the CBI to complete by June 3 its probe into the alleged murder of 11 girls at a shelter home in Bihar's Muzaffarpur and asked the agency to file a status report. A bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Deepak Gupta said that since the matter was "urgent", it would be heard by a vacation bench on June 3. "Office to list the matter on June 3 before the vacation bench of this court. In the meantime, the ongoing investigation, as stated in the reply of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), be completed and all necessary actions in accordance with law, including filing of status report before this court, be also completed," the bench said in its order. Estranged partners McDonald's and Vikram Bakshi Monday told the NCLAT that they are working towards an out-of-court settlement to end their over five-year-old dispute. Counsels for McDonald's India Pvt Ltd and Vikram Bakshi told a two-member National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) bench, headed by Chairperson S J Mukhopadhyay, that they are trying to work out a settlement. IMA demands review, repeal and re-conception of PCPNDT

The IMA has demanded a major overhaul of the Pre-conception and Pre-natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act, saying the legislation in its present form has led to "harassment" of obstetricians and radiologists and has "miserably failed" in restoring the sex ratio of the country. Accused of selling beef, Bengal man arrested in Himachal Pradesh

A man from West Bengal, accused of selling beef in Himachal Pradesh's Baddi district, has been arrested after he surrendered before police, officials said Monday. Rubil Shaikh of Murshidabad district was on the run after a case was lodged against him last October for allegedly selling beef at Bangla Basti in Barotiwala area of Baddi district, Superintendent of Police Rohit Malpan said. Multiple places were raided a few weeks ago in West Bengal to nab Shaikh but police had failed to trace him, he said. 137 cases of unfair means in CBSE class X exam, over five times more than last year

A total of 137 cases of students using unfair means were reported this year in the CBSE class 10 examination, five times more than last year, senior officials said. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) announced the results of class 10 examination on Monday, with 91 per cent candidates clearing the exam. In 2019, a total of 137 cases of unfair means were found as against last year's 26. "The maximum unfair means cases were from Ajmer region (59) followed by Chennai (30) and Panchkula (22)," a senior board official said. Trivandrum region which has the best pass percentage in both class 10 and 12 examinations did not report any such incidents. While two cases of unfair means were reported from Delhi, five were from Bhubaneshwar, six from Guwahati, four from Prayagraj, one from Patna and eight from Dehradun region. Man shot dead by bike-borne assailants in Delhi

A 30-year-old man was shot dead allegedly by two unidentified bike-borne assailants in south Delhi's Saket on Monday afternoon, police said. The victim, Prince, was on his way to a mall in Saket along with his friends after attending a court hearing at around 3 PM when the accused opened fire at him. "The injured was rushed to the hospital by his friends in an auto rickshaw where he later succumbed to his injuries," Deputy Commissioner of Police (south) Vijay Kumar said. A case has been registered and an investigation is underway, he said. During an inquiry, it was learnt that Prince was a bad character of Malviya Nagar police station area and was involved in multiple criminal cases, Kumar said. The victim had an ongoing enmity with another bad character of Aya Nagar police station area, he said.
