The Enforcement Directorate on Monday told a Delhi court that it will need custodial interrogation of former union minister P Chidambaram and his son Karti in Aricel-Maxis deal case once the ongoing probe abroad brings forth evidence. Special Judge O P Saini extended the protection from arrest to father-son duo till May 30 after the defence cited their pending anticipatory bail petitions, and directed the agency to produce the case file to show what material is being collected. The BJP lodged a complaint against Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Monday for allegedly deploying two minor boys for campaigning in Uttar Pradesh's Balrampur district. In a statement, state BJP vice-president J P S Rathore said the complaint had been submitted to the state chief electoral officer that Yadav had deployed two minor boys, which on whose bodies campaign material of the SP and the Bahujan Samaj Party was written. Rathore said it amounted to violation of the model code of conduct, describing it as "inhuman" and "cruel". "Under the scorching sun, where adults find it difficult to stand, two innocent boys were forced to stand for a few bucks. This is the disgusting face of the SP and the BSP," he said. A 27-year-old man absconding for over three years after allegedly raping a minor girl was recently arrested by the Mumbai police from Delhi, an official said Monday. Mohammad Nisar Shamshad Khan had broken into a house in suburban Ghatkopar in March, 2016 and had allegedly raped the girl and fled with Rs 40,000 cash and gold worth Rs 60,000, an official said. A case of rape and theft was registered at Ghatkopar police station at the time and, as part of the probe, police had also visited Uttar Pradesh to nab Khan, he said. Mumbai Crime Branch's Unit VII, which was conducting parallel investigation in the case, recently got a tip-off that Khan was working at a bank in New Delhi. "A trap was laid and he was nabbed. He was brought to Mumbai and has been handed over to Ghatkopar police for further action," the official said.
Bahrain's supreme court Monday upheld death sentences for two Shiite activists and jail terms for dozens of others on terror-related charges and links to Iran, BNA state news agency reported. The court, whose rulings are final, also stripped 47 of the defendants of their Bahraini citizenship, said BNA, citing an official statement. The court upheld life terms for 19 convicts and sentenced 37 others to between five and 15 years in jail, the statement said. The men were charged of forming a "terror cell" that carried out a number of attacks, killing at least two policemen and wounding several others. They were also convicted of smuggling weapons by boat, attacking a prison and helping a number of inmates flee, and undergoing military training in Iraq and Iran. Thirty-six of those convicted, including the two sentenced to death, are being held in jail while the rest were sentenced in absentia. The agency has booked Francis CX posted as Customs Havildar at the Cochin International Airport for allegedly helping to smuggle the gold having a market value of Rs 1.01 crore which was brought from Dubai by one Adinan Khalid on a private airlines on the instructions of one Faisal P A, the officials said. Two motorcycle-borne men died after crashing into a dry fodder-laden stationary truck on the Khatoli-Etawa state highway here, police said Monday. The incident took place late Sunday night and the victims were identified as Sahab Babu (25), a resident of Kishanganj in Bihar, and Rafique (19), of Laxmangarh town in Alwar district, Khatoli police station SHO Rampal Sharma said. Sharma said the duo had themselves loaded dry fodder on the truck before leaving to get a cold drink for themselves. While they were returning on the motorcycle, they collided with the same parked truck allegedly because of the darkness and died on the spot, he said. The SHO said the truck has been seized but the driver was on the run. The bodies were handed over to the families after postmortem, he added. A case has been registered against the driver for negligence and the matter is being probed, Sharma said.
In a relief to German auto major Volkswagen, the Supreme Court on Monday restrained the Centre from taking any "coercive" step against it for non-submission of Rs 500 crore fine imposed by the National Green Tribunal for damaging environment through use of "cheat device" in its diesel cars in India. The court order came on the eve of the deadline set by the NGT for Volkswagen India Private Limited, Indian subsidiary of German auto major, to deposit the fine with the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). "Issue notice. In the meantime, no coercive steps shall be taken against the appellant viz., Volkswagen India Private Limited," a bench of justices S A Bobde and S Abdul Nazeer, said. A special bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said it had made it clear earlier that both the matters would be heard together but despite that, the contempt petition was not listed for hearing along with the review pleas on Monday. Pakistan's ailing former prime minister Nawaz Sharif will return to jail here in a procession of Pakistani workers on Tuesday to complete the remaining period of his seven years imprisonment in the Al-Azizia Mills corruption case. A notice by the office of Supreme Court Secretary General said the report of the Committee, headed by Justice S A Bobde, "is not liable to be made public". The committee, also comprising two woman judges of the apex court -- Justices Indu Malhotra and Indira Banerjee -- gave the report ex-parte as the woman had opted out of the inquiry on April 30 after participating for three days. A Delhi court has sentenced a man to three years in jail for subjecting his wife to cruelty to coerce her to meet his dowry demands, which forced her to commit suicide within one-and-a-half year of their marriage. Additional Sessions Judge Deepak Garg convicted 30-year-old Pradeep under section 498 A (husband or his relative subjecting wife to cruelty) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on him. "It is proved that Renu (wife) was being subjected to cruelty in her matrimonial house and she was harassed with a view to coerce her and her parents to meet the said unlawful demand of money... and hence accused Pradeep is convicted for the offence under section 498 A IPC," the court said. The court, however, acquitted Pradeep for the offence of dowry death. It also acquitted Renu's mother-in-law of all charges.
