Two unidentified men allegedly snatched an iPhone worth nearly Rs one lakh from a student here, police said today. Aman Singhal, a student of a private university here, was talking on his 'iPhone X' when two men on a motorcycle snatched it, the Knowledge Park police station in-charge, Hansraj Bhadoria, said. A wife is entitled to visit her parents and it cannot be a reason for the husband to complain, the Delhi High Court has said, dismissing a plea of a man seeking divorce on grounds of cruelty. The man had claimed that the frequent visits of his wife to her parental home without intimating him and his family members has caused him mental pain and anguish and also levelled several other allegations against her. A bench of Justices Hima Kohli and Deepa Sharma, however, brushed aside his contention and said, "A wife is certainly entitled to visit her parents' home and such a visit per se, cannot be the reason for a husband to complain." The city police today told the Delhi High Court that it proposed to bring in a new system of forwarding the FIRs related to sexual violence against minors to the Delhi State Legal Services Authority (DSLSA) to ensure that the victims got the necessary legal aid. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar was also informed that a display board was installed at all the police stations with phone numbers and e-mail addresses of those concerned in this regard. The Delhi police counsel further submitted that the legal aid counsel would be available round-the-clock and that the victims as well the accused could avail of his services. Noting that such FIRs should be sent to the DSLSA within 24 hours, the bench said the police should work on a mechanism, under which the same could be sent immediately. An RSS worker was attacked by some unidentified persons at Kathirur in Kannur district tonight, police said. The incident took place around 7.15 pm, they said. Praveen, who was travelling on his motorcycle, was returning home when he was waylaid and assaulted by some persons. He suffered injuries on his left hand, right eye and back of his head, police said, adding, he has been admitted to the Kozhikode medical college hospital.
A 17-year-old boy, riding pillion, was killed today when a speeding bus allegedly hit his motorcycle near Garhi Chokhandi crossing here, police said. The deceased has been identified as Osama. The accident took place when Osama and Roin were going on motorcycle from Garhi Chokhandi to Shramik Kunj. Near Garhi Chowkhndi crossing, a speeding bus hit their motorcycle. Osama, who was riding pillion on the bike, fell down and was mowed down by the bus. Roin sustained minor injuries. The driver of the bus tried to flee the scene. But people standing nearby the accident site managed to nab him. The bus driver, identified as Pradip, was thrashed before being handed over to police. The police have arrested the accused driver and seized the bus. The body of the victim has been sent for post mortem.

Hinting at possible violence on Tihar inmates by the jail staff, a three-member committee appointed by the Delhi High Court today informed it that they have "materials" in connection with the November 21 incident, but needed more time to arrive at a conclusion. The high court had termed "very disturbing" the alleged attack on inmates lodged in a high-risk ward in Jail No. 1 of the central jail. It then appointed the panel to look into the matter. The fact-finding panel headed by a district judge was to enquire into the incident in which 18 inmates were allegedly beaten up. The committee today sought an extension from the court to conclude its probe. The committee, in its report, has said the inmates were beaten up without any justifiable reason. A Shanghai court today convicted a foreigner of delaying wages to employees and sentenced him to five months in detention with a fine of 40,000 yuan (about USD 6,050). It was the first time a foreigner has been convicted of the crime in Shanghai. The foreigner, owner of clothing firm Mingxin Fashion Clothes (Shanghai), was found to have held back the wages of its 158 employees totalling 600,000 yuan, according to Shanghai Qingpu District Court. The foreigner's identity and nationality were withheld by the authorities. He was arrested in northeast China's Liaoning Province in August after having left the country for seven months, state-run Xinhua news agency reported. The municipal government said it places importance on resolving issues of delayed wages and has cleared up defaults of 537 million yuan in the first three quarters this year. A man and his nephew were today arrested allegedly for demanding extortion money of Rs 20 lakh from a trader, while another man was held for providing SIM cards, used to place the extortion calls, on fake documents. According to DSP Nishant Sharma, the trader, Sushil, had lodged an FIR against some unidentified persons who had called him and demanded the extortion money. The number used for calling Sushil was registered in the name of a Chitehra resident Mukesh Bhati. The arrested accused have been identified as Sirajuddin and Javed. During the course of investigation, it was found that the phone call was made from Jewar area. On interrogation, the two accused revealed before the police about their relationship. The Delhi Police today received a dressing down from the high court for lodging a stalking case against a woman lawyer and allegedly dragging her out of her residence to arrest her despite the court's order against any coercive action. The alleged assault on the woman lawyer by the police prompted the Delhi High Court Bar Association to call for a post-lunch strike today. A bench of justices Siddharth Mridul and Deepa Sharma directed the Home Ministry and the Delhi government to "forthwith" take action in accordance with the law against the "delinquent officers" and file a report before the next hearing on January 5. The Orissa High Court today granted bail to Prashant Dash, CMD of Seashore Group of Companies, in three chit fund related cases. The bench of Justice C R Dash granted conditional bail to Prashant in the cases registered in Jajpur, Nawarangpur and Titlagarh police stations. He was earlier granted bail in three cases registered in Koraput and one in Ganjam. As many as 47 newly-elected members of the Gujarat Assembly have criminal cases pending against them as per their election affidavits, according to a study conducted by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Gujarat Election Watch. It said that 18 (18 per cent) out of 99 BJP MLAs and 25 (32 per cent) out of 77 Congress MLAs have declared criminal cases pending against them. ADR and GEW, which work for electoral reforms, analysed the self-sworn affidavits of all the 182 newly-elected MLAs. Results of the elections were declared yesterday. The study said that while the number of MLAs facing criminal cases decreased as compared to 2012, the number of 'crorepati' MLAs (those with assets of Rs 1 crore or more) has increased. Average assets of newly-elected MLAs are Rs 8.46 crore, the study said. A Police Sub-Inspector (PSI) was today arrested for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 10,000, a senior Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) official said. Narendra Munde, attached with Dhanora Police Station, had demanded Rs 20,000 as bribe for not arresting a man in a case which was registered at the police station, the officer said. The man lodged a complaint with the ACB, following which a trap was laid and one Mustak Qureshi, was apprehended for accepting the bribe on Munde's behalf, he said. Later Munde was arrested, the officer said, adding a case under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act was registered.
The Enforcement Directorate said today it has attached assets worth Rs 58 crore of a Mumbai- based diamond firm in connection with a money laundering probe launched after demonetisation of high-value currency in Nov. last year. The case involves Rs 1,478 crore funds and more than 500 alleged shell company accounts. The agency said it has issued a provisional order, under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), attaching 10 immovable properties, gold jewellery and diamonds worth Rs 58.16 crore in the case against Ms. Rajeshwar Exports. "These properties belong to Ritesh Jain and Amritlal Jain," an agency statement said. The case emerged after the ED booked Ritesh Jain, a Mumbai-based diamond trader, for "opening bank accounts in the name of dummy companies for affecting illegal transactions" post demonetisation, and subsequently indulging in alleged illegal import of diamonds using a maze of bank accounts and layering. Two persons from Bhiwandi in the district were today arrested for allegedly repeatedly raping a minor girl, police said. Women Police Sub-Inspector Ashwini Raut of Bhiwandi police station said the 13-year-old victim and the accused knew each other. On November 5, one of the accused Vijay Yadav (19), an auto driver, took her to his room in Anjurphata area and raped her, Raut said. He threatened her of dire consequences if she narrated her ordeal. On November 12, he again took her to his room and raped her, the officer added. Later one of Vijay friend's Sandeep Patil (30) came to know about the incident when he had visited Vijay's house, she said. Miscreants shot dead a homeguard posted at a jail in Bihar's Siwan district this morning, police said. The 45-year-old homeguard was gunned down near his native Jodkan village when he was on his way to the Siwan Mandal Kara jail to report for duty, Sub-divisional Police Officer of Siwan Sadar, Kartikey Sharma said. The man was rushed to the Siwan sadar hospital where he was declared brought dead, he said. Police investigations are on to identify and nab the culprits, he added.
