US man executed for double murder

A man convicted of murdering two people was executed on Thursday in the US state of Georgia. Scotty Morrow, 52, was put to death by lethal injection at 9:38 pm (0138 GMT) at a prison in Jackson, the Georgia Department of Corrections said in a statement. Shortly after Christmas 1994, Morrow broke into his ex-girlfriend's house, where she was with two friends and her children. Morrow shot the three women, killing two of them, including his former girlfriend, in front of her five-year-old son. He was convicted of the double murder and sentenced to death in 1999, but the decision was overturned in 2011 on the grounds that his trial defense was poor because his lawyers had failed to note he had been abused and raped as a child. The Georgia Supreme Court then reversed that decision, confirming the original verdict from 1999. On Wednesday, the Georgia State Board of Pardons and Paroles dismissed a clemency request from supporters, who claimed he had become a model prisoner who was sorry for

A Vietnamese woman who stood trial for the assassination of the North Korean leader's half-brother was freed from prison Friday, bringing down the final legal curtain on a dramatic and often bizarre two-year murder mystery. Kim Jong Nam, the estranged relative of Kim Jong Un and once seen as heir apparent to the North's leadership, died in agony after having his face smeared with a banned nerve agent as he waited at Kuala Lumpur airport in February, 2017. The sensational killing made headlines around the world, and sparked a furious diplomatic row as Seoul accused Pyongyang of an elaborate plot to murder a figure who had spent years in exile and been critical of his family's rule. Doan Thi Huong from Vietnam and Indonesian Siti Aisyah were arrested after being spotted on CCTV approaching Kim but always denied murder. The women insisted they were tricked into carrying out the hit by North Korean agents who said it was a reality TV show prank and fled Malaysia after the killing. They ...

HC seeks responses of Delhi govt, LG on plea challenging new jail manual

The Delhi High Court has sought the responses of the AAP government in the national capital and the Lieutenant Governor on a plea challenging the constitutional validity of the new jail manual and alleging that the LG was not kept in the loop. A bench of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice A J Bhambhani issued notice to the authorities and listed the matter for further hearing on September 2. The court was hearing a petition filed by social activist and advocate Amit Sahni, who said the Delhi government had not sought the approval of the LG before giving effect to the Delhi Prison Rules (DPR), 2018, which made those "unconstitutional" and liable to be set aside. "Unlike previous rules, neither the beginning lines of DPR, 2018 mention about any approval sought from the LG nor do they refer to anything that the rules shall become operative after notifications to be issued by the LG, in future, in this regard," the plea claimed. It said by virtue of the DPR, 2018, the Delhi ...
