In a tragic incident, a six-year old boy was killed when a cement bench fell on him, police said here Friday. The boy was sitting and playing on the bench in their residential apartment complex when the accident occurred, the police said. The supporting stand of the cement bench had already been broken and nobody noticed it, they said. A case was registered following a complaint from the boy's father, they added.
The Mizoram police deported eight young Rohingya women, suspected to be victims of human trafficking, to neighbouring Assam on Friday after they were arrested near the border of the two states in Kolasib district a day ago, police said. The women, aged between 18-22, were arrested at the Vairengte police checkpoint on the Mizoram-Assam border while trying to enter the state without any valid travel documents on Thursday, the police said. The eight women were produced before a fast-track court, which fined them Rs 50 each and ordered that they should be pushed back to Assam. The state police handed them to the Young Muslim Association (YMA) of Bagha town in Assam's Cachar district. The women have been identified as Toyabah Begum, Tasim, Noorkayash, Atariza, Swaminara Begum, Rubina, Sanwara Begum and Serkhu. In a rare judgement, a CBI court here Friday awarded life imprisonment to six people, including a bank official, for fraudulently obtaining credit facility of over Rs 2.5 crore from Bank of India between 2000 and 2003. Special judge S R Tamboli awarded the life sentence to Bhagwanji Joshi, the then AGM of Bank of India's Mandvi branch, borrowers Manohar Lal Ahuja and his son Amit, and three others, Mahesh Bohra, Sandesh Nage and Shanti Lal Chauhan, who had played a role in forging documents. The judge held the accused guilty under IPC sections 420 (cheating), 467 (forgery of valuable security), and 120 B (criminal conspiracy), as well as under the Prevention of Corruption Act. While passing the order, judge Tamboli observed that three of the accused were habitual offenders and had cheated various nationalised banks. A special court for POCSO cases at Bharuch in Gujarat has sentenced a man to life imprisonment till death for raping a hearing-and-speech impaired girl. Ashok Vasava, 34, was convicted under IPC section 376 (rape) as well as under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act Thursday. Public prosecutor R J Desai said Vasava, father of three children, raped an 11-year-old girl who was deaf and mute at Jhagadiya in Bharuch district on December 6, 2016, when she stepped out of her house to answer nature's call. While the girl's testimony could not be recorded, the prosecution examined nine other witnesses including her mother and also produced medical evidence, Desai said. A 39-year old man has been arrested in Mysuru for alleged involvement in the killing of four members of RSS and its affiliate organisations in Karnataka in the past 11 years, police said Friday. Atique Ahmed Sharif alias Timber Atique, a resident of Lashkar Mohalla in Mysuru, was arrested Thursday by the Central Crime Branch and the local police. While he was arrested following investigation into the killing of Raju of Kyatamaranahalli in Mysuru in 2016, during interrogation his link to the fatal attack on three others came to light, police said. He is involved in four murder cases and one attempt to murder case, Mysuru Commissioner of Police K T Balakrishna told PTI. He however, refused to divulge further details, saying the investigation into the cases was at a crucial stage. Police sources said Atique had been targeting right wing outfit members here and was allegedly involved in the killings of three others between 2008 and 2009.
US authorities have opened a criminal probe into Ford's US emissions certification process, the automaker said Friday. Ford in February 2019 "voluntarily disclosed" to US and California regulators a "potential concern" with the program to certify the amount of pollutants emitted by its vehicles. The Gauhati High Court on Friday set aside the suspension of Nagaon district Deputy Superintendent of Police Sabita Das, as Assam authorities failed to frame charges against her within the stipulated time in an alleged bribery case. Justice N Kotiswar Singh reinstated the senior police official with her rank and post as the state government did not frame charges against Das within the three-month period. "The court set aside the suspension order. Her salary and other components will remain as earlier. The detailed judgement is being drafted," Additional Senior Government Advocate Dipankar Nath told PTI here. A Delhi court Friday said it will hear on May 1 a criminal complaint filed by AAP leader Atishi against former cricketer and BJP candidate Gautam Gambhir for allegedly enrolling as a voter in more than one constituency in violation of the Representation of the People Act (RPA). The Crime Branch have busted an inter-state drug syndicate and recovered around 25 kilograms of marijuana from them, police said Friday. Three people - Rajeev Kumar (28), Sanjay Ram (25) and Anil (22), who used run the syndicate under the garb of turmeric business were also arrested, police said. "The arrest was made following a tip off that the members of the syndicate would come in New Usmanpur area with a consignment of marijuana," said Ajit Kumar Singla, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime). Two of the accused, Sanjay Ram and Anil, were apprehended from New Usmanpur after a trap was laid for them and 25.600 kilograms of marijuana was recovered from them, he said. Investigations revealed that Rajeev Kumar was the mastermind of the syndicate. He was also traced and arrested on the same day. Kumar belongs to Sitamarhi district of Bihar. In what could spell trouble for BSP chief Mayawati, the CBI has started investigation into alleged irregularities in the sale of 21 state-owned sugar mills during her tenure as Uttar Pradesh chief minister. The sale of the mills during her tenure in 2011-12 had led to a loss of Rs 1,179 crore to the state exchequer, officials said. The agency has registered an FIR and six preliminary enquiries to probe the alleged irregularities, they said. The BJP government under Yogi Adityanath had recommended a CBI probe in the matter on April 12 last year. The agency has not named as accused any official of the Uttar Pradesh government or any politician of the state, the officials said. Seven private persons, who had allegedly submitted forged documents during the purchase of the UP State Sugar Corporation Ltd mills, have been booked by the agency, they said.
