Couple booked for cheating doctor of Rs 2 cr in Thane

A couple has been booked for allegedly duping a city-based doctor of over Rs 2 crore on the promise of helping him set up a hospital in Dubai, police said on Wednesday. The accused came to the victim, who runs an in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) centre in Thane city of Maharashtra, for some medical treatment in 2015-16. Due their interactions, the couple promised to help the doctor in setting up an IVF centre in Dubai and allegedly took Rs 2.15 crore from him, a Thane police spokesperson said. An estimated expenditure plan of Rs 3 crore was drawn for the project and the accused held several meetings with the victim till 2018 and also visited Dubai. The victim alleged that he made payments to the accused for interiors and other works to set up the hospital. However, when he went to Dubai last year, he came to know that the accused had not paid the money to the local agent to start the work, the police official said. Maharashtra: 14-year-old kills elder brother for Rs 40 in Aurangabad

A 14-year-old boy from Aurangabad on Wednesday killed his elder brother, who was born just an hour before him, over Rs 40.The two brothers had a tussle for money a day before the incident as well.The police said, that the younger brother has admitted of committing the crime.The deceased, on returning home in the afternoon from school had fallen asleep. Angry over their argument the previous day, the accused took a hammer and attacked him, the police added.The police have sent the elder brother's body for post-mortem and said that a further probe is underway.

Cardinal George Pell, who has been found guilty of sexually assaulting two choirboys, is no longer in charge of Vatican finances, it said Tuesday. "I can confirm that Cardinal George Pell is no longer the Prefect of the Secretariat for the Economy," Vatican spokesman Alessandro Gisotti tweeted about the third-most powerful position in the Vatican. Qnet scam: Cyberabad Police issues notice to Shahrukh Khan, others

Cyberabad Police has served notices to prominent Bollywood actors Shahrukh Khan, Vivek Oberoi, Jackie Shroff, Anil Kapoor, Boman Irani, and others for their alleged involvement in the multi-crore Qnet scam, according to sources.A notice was also served to cricketer Yuvraj Singh and Tollywood actors Allu Sirish and Pooja Hegde in connection with the case, the source added. According to sources, since last two days, Cyberabad Police has served notices to around 500 members in the Qnet scam registered in Cyberabad earlier. Vishakhapatnam: Congress leader found murdered at her residence

Former Congress party worker Bhogasamudram Vijaya Reddy was found brutally murdered at her residence, the police said on Tuesday.The murder occurred on Monday and according to police, gold jewellery was also stolen from the spot.On Monday, at around 11 AM, a text message was sent from Reddy's phone to her husband (Narayana) that she was moving elsewhere on work and later the phone was switched off, the police informed adding that the husband spent that night at a neighbour's house.Next day, when he returned to the locked home, he opened the door with another key which was with a relative. Uttarakhand: HC issues notice to former Bihar Chief Justice over contempt

In an unprecedented move, the Uttrakhand High Court issued a showcause notice to former Bihar Chief Justice and Central Administration Tribunal (CAT) chairman Narsimhan Reddy in connection with a contempt plea filed against him.The notice was issued to Reddy by a single judge bench of the court presided by Justice Sharad Kumar Sharma recently in a contempt plea filed against him by IFS officer and Ramon Magsaysay awardee Sanjeev Chaturvedi.The court has given four weeks time to Reddy to show that why the proceedings should not be drawn against him. Three more held in connection with NRI businessman's death

Three more people have been arrested in connection with the death of NRI businessman Jayaram Chigurupati, police said Tuesday. Early this month, the 55-year-old businessman was found dead in a parked car under mysterious circumstances on a highway in Krishna district in Andhra Pradesh. With this the total number of arrests in the case has gone up to five. Police had earlier arrested Kavakutla Rakesh Reddy and his aide Dunne Srinivas. Vislawath Vishal, Nenavath Nagesh and Lakshmireddy Subash Chandra Reddy were arrested on Tuesday in connection with the case, a police release said. HC orders disqualified MLA to refund salaries from 2006-11

The Madras High Court Tuesday ordered a Tamil Nadu MLA, who was disqualified by the Supreme Court, to refund Rs 21.58 lakh which included the salary and allowances received by him as a legislator. Justice V Parthiban gave the order dismissing a petition by P Veldurai against a notice issued by the state assembly secretary seeking refund of salary and allowances which he had received between 2006 and 2011 as an MLA and a penalty, totalling Rs 21.58 lakh. The judge directed the former MLA to refund the amount within four weeks. Veludurai, elected from Cheranmahadevi constituency in the 2006 assembly election, was disqualified as MLA by the Supreme Court in April 2011, on the ground that he was a government road contractor at the time of filing nomination and hence, barred from contesting polls.. London's black cab drivers on Tuesday lost their High Court battle to get Uber's licence to operate in the British capital revoked. The United Cabbies Group (UCG), which operate the city's metered taxis, had claimed the decision to give Uber a 15-month permit in June last year was "tainted by actual or apparent bias" of Chief Magistrate Emma Arbuthnot at Westminster Magistrates' Court in London. Justice (Retd) P S Teji has been appointed as the chairman of the Police Complaints Authority set up to look into complaints against erring policemen in the city, officials said Tuesday. The authority has started functioning on Vikas Bhawan in IP Estate under the chairmanship of Justice (Retd) Teji, they added. The other three members of the authority include former bureaucrats Nutan Guha Biswas and P Kamraj and Advocate Tinu Bajwa. Three East African nationals have been arrested here for allegedly selling ganja and one kg of the narcotic was seized from them, police said Tuesday. : A local Congress woman functionary was found murdered at her apartment here and a 200 gram gold chain and some ornaments stolen, police said. They said a man and a woman had reportedly contacted Bhogasamudram Vijaya Reddy over selling her flat for Rs 1.30 crore. On Monday morning, a text message was sent from Vijaya Reddy's phone to her husband, an employee in a private sector bank, that she was going to another place for work. Subsequently, her mobile phone was found switched off, police said. The husband returned home Monday evening and found the door to his flat locked from outside and so stayed at his neighbour's home for the night. SC transfers investigation of Kalburgi murder to SIT probing Gauri Lankesh case

The Supreme Court on Tuesday transferred the probe into the killing of rationalist M M Kalburgi to the SIT investigating the murder case of journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh after Karnataka government said there were common links in the two cases. Kalburgi, a former vice-chancellor of Hampi University and well-known epigraphist, was shot dead at his residence in Kalyan Nagar in Dharwad, Karnataka, on August 30, 2015. Born in 1938, he was a Sahitya Akademi award-winning writer of old Kannada literature. The state Crime Investigation Department was probing Kalburgi's killing and the SIT was investigating the murder of Lankesh in September 2017 in Bengaluru. During the hearing, the top court said the SIT probe into Kalburgi's killing will be monitored by the Dharwad bench of the Karnataka High Court.
