Crime Branch takes over probe, 7 held in connection with Youth
The Crime Branch Thursday took over the investigation into the killing of two Youth Congress workers, as the total number of arrests in the case climbed to seven with five more people being arrested, police said. The arrest of K M Suresh, K Anil Kumar, M Ashwin, Sreerag and G Sreejan was recorded Thursday, they said. Local CPI(M) leader, A Peethambaran and Saji George were arrested in the last two days. A police press release said the case relating to the killings has been handed over to the Crime branch as per the direction of the DGP Loknath Behera. In a setback to the ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist), its local committee member Peethambaran was arrested on Tuesday in connection with the killings of Youth Congress activists Kripesh (24) and Sarath Lal (21) on Sunday night. SC commutes death sentence for 'unexplained delay' in forwarding mercy petition
The Supreme Court on Thursday commuted the death sentence of a man who murdered his wife and five children after rapping the Madhya Pradesh government for it "unexplained" delay of four years in forwarding his mercy petition to the Centre, leading to almost five years in deciding it.

Man involved in 113 criminal cases arrested in Delhi
A man allegedly involved in more than 113 cases of murder, dacoity and robbery, was arrested in Kapashera following a brief exchange of fire with the police, a senior officer said on Thursday. Raju alias Hakla was involved in more than 113 cases of murder, attempt to murder, dacoity, robbery, snatching, among others. Officials of several police stations were searching for him, the officer said. Acting on a tip off, a Crime Branch team laid a trap near the expected place of his arrival in the early hours on Wednesday. The accused's car was intercepted and he was instructed to surrender, police said. Instead of doing so, he fired upon the police party and tried to flee, they added. He fired at a head constable, but missed. In retaliation a policeman also fired a round in the air from his service pistol and the police team manage to overpower the accused from Pushpanjali Farm House in Kapashera, they said.
Sweeper held for sexually assaulting minor girl in Gurgaon school
A sweeper at a private school was Thursday arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a three-year-old girl, the police said. Komal, employed with the preparatory school here, was arrested from his residence in Gurgaon. He was booked under Section 6 (aggravated penetrative sexual assault) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. According to the Gurgaon Police PRO, the incident took place inside the school toilet on Wednesday when Komal saw the victim alone. It came to light when the girl returned home and complained of pain in her private parts. Her parents approached the school management and Komal was identified by the girl as the perpetrator. "The victim's parents lodged a complaint against the accused following which he was arrested," the police said.

Court issues summons to Rahul Gandhi, Yechury over comments after Lankesh murder
A metropolitan magistrate's court here has issued summons to Congress chief Rahul Gandhi and CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury after a defamation complaint was filed by an RSS worker for allegedly linking journalist Gauri Lankesh's murder with "BJP-RSS ideology". RSS worker and lawyer Dhrutiman Joshi had filed a private complaint in the court in 2017 against Rahul Gandhi, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, the CPI (M) and its general secretary Yechury. Magistrate P K Deshpande on February 18 ordered that "process be issued" against Rahul Gandhi and Yechury. He, however, dismissed the complaint against Sonia Gandhi and the CPI(M), saying a party cannot be held liable for comments made by individuals. The matter was set for further hearing on March 25. Arrested Cong MLA brought to Bengaluru from Gujarat, jailed
Congress MLA J N Ganesh was Thursday flown here from Gujarat, a day after being arrested for allegedly assaulting another lawmaker from his party. He was produced before the Ramanagara district court, which remanded him to judicial custody for 14 days. The Kampli MLA from Ballari district has been lodged in the Parappana Agrahara jail. Ganesh was arrested near a restaurant in Somnath, weeks after he was declared absconding for allegedly thrashing Anand Singh during a brawl at a resort on city outskirts during the recent political turmoil in the state. The police recorded his "voluntary" statement and took him to a hospital for medical check-up, Ramanagara Superintendent of police Ramesh Bhanot told reporters. Delhi Police nabs 2 sharpshooters of Neeraj Bawana gang
Delhi Police arrested two sharpshooters belonging to the national capital's infamous Neeraj Bawana Gang.The accused have been identified as 23-year-old Vikrant alias Chatanki and 22-year-old Akshay alias Goli. Two pistols along with live cartridges were recovered from their possession. Medical board conducts post-mortem on Pak prisoner killed in jail
A three-member medical board Thursday carried out a post-mortem on the body of the Pakistani prisoner who was allegedly killed by fellow inmates at the Central Jail here. Dr Nand Lal, who was part of the board of doctors from the government-run Sawai Man Singh Hospital, said the examination was conducted under the supervision of a judicial magistrate. The post-mortem report will be submitted to the magistrate, he said. The body of Lashkar-e-Taiba operative who was serving a life sentence is kept at the mortuary and may be handed over to the Pakistan High Commission if it asks for it, police officials said. On Wednesday, Pakistan had expressed concern over media reports on Shakrullah's murder. Couple among 5 detained for gold robbery
: Five people, including a couple, have been detained for interrogation in connection with the robbery of Rs 2.50 crore worth of gold and diamonds from a worker of a parcel service firm, police said Thursday. The robbery occurred early this month when Prithvi Singh was taking the parcel of jewels on a motorycle to the airport here, when he was waylaid by a gang. Based on the CCTV footage near the parcel office, the five were picked up for questioning, city Police Commissioner Sumit Saran told reporters here. Three of those secured had been watching the movement of the staff and visitors in the parcel office before the heist, he said. This led to the conclusion that the woman in the office and her husband had planned the robbery, he said. Kolkata Police summons CBI Joint Director in extortion case
Kolkata Police on Thursday summoned Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Joint Director Pankaj Srivastava in connection with an extortion case.The Kolkata Police has directed Srivastava to mark his presence before the Bhowanipore Police Station within one week for questioning in connection pertaining to an extortion case of Rs 45 lakh from a Kolkata based businessman.Earlier this month, Srivastava was summoned by the Kolkata Police. Delhi court dismisses bail plea of alleged middleman in EC bribery case
A Delhi court has dismissed a bail plea of an alleged middleman in the Election Commission bribery case involving AIADMK (Amma) faction leader T T V Dhinakaran. Special Judge Arun Bhardwaj rejected the bail plea of Sukesh Chandrashekhar, who was arrested on April 16, 2017, saying he was not entitled to relief at this stage as charges have already been framed against him. SC appoints Lt Gen Ravi Thodge as 3rd member of CoA for BCCI
The Supreme Court Thursday appointed Lieutenant General Ravi Thodge as the third member of the Committee of Administrators (CoA) for BCCI. A bench of Justices S A Bobde and A M Sapre appointed Lt Gen Thodge as a member of CoA after senior advocate P S Narasimha, assisting the court as an amicus curiae in the BCCI matter, told the apex court that two members of the CoA have resigned. "Having regard to the importance of the said Committee of Administrators for administrating the BCCI, we consider it appropriate to appoint Lt Gen Ravi Thodge, PVSM, to act as a third member of the aforesaid Committee of Administrators for BCCI," the bench said in its order. The apex court has fixed the BCCI matter for further hearing on March 14. In 2017, the apex court had appointed a four-member CoA, headed by former Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) Vinod Rai, to run the affairs of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and implement the court-approved recommendations of the Justice .
