FBI 'looking into' Ryan Adams' interaction with underage fan

Following allegations of sexual abuse against singer-songwriter Ryan Adams, the F.B.I is "looking into" whether his sexually explicit communications with an underage fan amounted to criminal behaviour.The revelation comes from a law enforcement official cited by The New York Times, reported Variety.The fan, identified only as 'Ava', was between the ages of 14 and 16 when the interactions, which included nudity, took place.She is one of several women accusing the singer of sexually inappropriate behaviour in an article in the Times, published Wednesday.However, Adams, through his lawyer, Andrew B. Ukrainian official arrested over deadly acid attack

A Ukrainian court on Friday placed a high-ranking regional official in custody after he was charged with organising a deadly acid attack on an activist. Vladyslav Manger will be held until at least March 3, with bail of 2.5 million hryvnia (81,560 euros, $91,800,), press secretary for General Prosecutor Larysa Sargan told AFP. Manger, the head of the regional council in the southern region of Kherson, was charged with organising the attack on prominent anti-corruption activist Kateryna Gandzyuk. The 33-year-old was attacked in July and had a litre of acid poured on her. She died in November after months of treatment, including more than 10 operations. Maran brothers approach HC seeking to quash framing of charges

Former communications minister Dayanidhi Maran and his brother Kalanithi Maran have again approached the Madras High Court Friday seeking to quash the fresh charges framed against them by the trial court in the illegal telephone exchange case. They claimed that guidelines were not followed by the trial court at the time of framing charges in the case. When the matter came up before Justice Jagadish Chandira today, the judge directed the petitioners to approach Justice Anand Venkatesh who had passed orders in connection with the above matter on January 29. The CBI Special Court on January 30 framed fresh charges in the illegal telephone exchange case filed by the CBI against Maran brothers and others after a detailed order was passed by the high court. 5-yr-old girl raped by youth

A five-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a youth in the Fakharpur area here, police said Friday. The victim had come to attend a wedding in Fakharpur township. She was allegedly abducted by the youth when she was playing with other children Wednesday night, Superintendent of Police Gaurav Grover said. The youth, identified as Fahim, took her to his house and raped her there, he added. On a complaint of the family members of the girl, an FIR has been lodged and the accused has been taken into custody, the SP said. Police personnel have been deployed in the area to main law and order, he said.

BJP leader's daughter 'kidnapped' at gunpoint in West Bengal

A local BJP leader's daughter has been allegedly kidnapped at gunpoint from her residence by a gang of miscreants in West Bengal's Birbhum district, a senior police officer said Friday. One suspect has been detained for questioning in connection with the incident, Superintendent of Police Shyam Singh said. Suprabhat Batyabyal, who switched to the BJP from the TMC around five months ago, was not home when the miscreants broke into his house at Labhpur area in the district and kidnapped his 22-year-old daughter, according to his brother. Before joining the TMC, Batyabal was a district committee member of the CPI(M). "Five miscreants barged into the house around 8pm, on finding out that Suprabhat was not home. "First, they confined us in a room and locked it from outside. Then, at gunpoint, they dragged my niece out and forced her into a car, which was parked near our home, and drove off," Sujit Batyabal said. SC stays execution of MP teacher in minor rape case

The Supreme Court on Friday stayed the execution of Mahendra Singh Gond, a school teacher who was awarded death sentence for raping a minor.Gond (28) was given death sentence by a district court for raping a four-year-old girl at Satna in Madhya Pradesh. Myanmar court sentences 2 to death for killing Suu Kyi aide

A court in Myanmar has sentenced two men to death for the killing of a prominent Muslim lawyer who was a close adviser to the country's top leader, Aung San Suu Kyi. The court found the gunman, Kyi Lin, guilty of premeditated murder and illegal weapons possession for the Jan. 29, 2017 shooting of Ko Ni in broad daylight at the Yangon airport. An accomplice involved in planning the killing was also sentenced to death, and two other men involved in the crime received prison sentences. A fifth suspect thought to be the crime's mastermind remains at large. Ko Ni advised Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy on ways to get around articles in the army-imposed constitution that give the military wide powers even after Myanmar transitioned to democracy.

Ex-Goldman banker facing 1MDB charges agrees to US extradition

An ex-Goldman Sachs banker accused of involvement in the multi-billion-dollar 1MDB scandal has agreed to be extradited from Malaysia to the United States to face charges, his lawyers said Friday. Huge sums of public money were purportedly stolen from Malaysian state fund 1MDB and used to buy everything from yachts to art in a scheme that allegedly involved former premier Najib Razak and contributed to his government's election defeat. Goldman's role is under scrutiny as the Wall Street titan helped arrange $6.5 billion in bonds for 1MDB. Authorities in Malaysia and the US accuse former employees of charges ranging from bribery to stealing billions of dollars, and investigators believe cash was laundered through the US financial system. HC judge orders installation of CCTV in his chamber, recommends same measure at govt offices

Quoting Mahatma Gandhi's dictum that practice is better than preaching, a Madras High Court judge has ordered installation of CCTV camera in his chamber while recommending the same for offices of all highly-placed Tamil Nadu government officials to tackle sexual harassment at work places. Justice S M Subramaniam directed the court registry to install CCTV camera in his chamber within two weeks, while disposing of petitions from IPS officer S Murugan and a woman police superintendent who had made sexual harassment charges against the senior police official. In his order, the judge referred to Gandhiji's quote "An ounce of practice is worth more than tons of preaching", and gave the go ahead for a probe by an Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) and the CB-CID which had registered an FIR on the woman officer's complaint. Maha: Man gets 112 days in jail for ferrying gutkha

A court in Dahanu in Palghar district has sentenced a 24-year-old man to 112 days in jail for transporting gutkha, a substance banned in Maharashtra. District Judge S A Mulik, in a recent order, also fined the accused, Abdul Kadir Khan, Rs 1,02,200, said Additional Public Prosecutor RB Valvi. Khan was arrested after police, acting on a tip-off, found gutkha worth Rs 2.21 lakh in his car on December 11, 2015, Valvi said. MP: Man gets 10 years in jail for ferrying poppy husk

A special court in Madhya Pradesh's Mandsaur district Thursday sentenced the owner of a multi-utility vehicle to ten years in jail for possessing and transporting poppy husk. Bhanvarlal Vishnoi (35), a resident of neighbouring Rajasthan, was also fined Rs 1 lakh by special judge (NDPS) Rupesh Kumar Gupta, according to deputy director, prosecution, Bapusingh Thakur. On June 3, 2010, acting on a tip-off, police had intercepted the vehicle and seized 2.96 quintal poppy husk from it, he said. The driver escaped but the police, based on the vehicle's registration number and other documents, zeroed in on Vishnoi, said Thakur. Vishnoi was charged under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act 1985, he said.

Maha: Minor son held for gold theft, father commits suicide

A man allegedly committed suicide after his minor son was held in a gold theft case at the house of a municipal corporator where he worked, Nashik police said Friday. Shripad Tukaram Mhaske (52) consumed poison late Wednesday night near Bhagur bus-stand area here, an official said. "Mhaske used to work in the bungalow of architect Shivajirao Patil, who is father-in-law of Congress corporator Hemlata Patil. His minor son would also help out at the bungalow located in Tilakwadi area here," said Inspector Ashok Bhagat of Sarkarwada police station. "Five gold biscuits of ten tola (10 grams) each valued at Rs 15 lakh and Rs 10,000 in cash were stolen from the bungalow last month. The family noticed the theft on Tuesday and told police that they suspected Mhaske's minor son," he said. Suspected member of Naveen Bhati gang arrested: Police

A suspected member of the Naveen Bhati gang, who was allegedly planning to kill the members of a rival gang, was arrested from Dwarka, police said on Thursday. The accused, identified as Ravi alias Chiru (25), was a resident of Pochanpur, Dwarka, they said, adding that he was wanted in a recent murder case lodged at the Palam village police station and was carrying a reward of Rs 50,000. Three men were arrested for allegedly duping a retired West Bengal police officer on the pretext of high returns, police said Thursday.
