Over 60% of urban India's sewage enters water bodies untreated: NGT

More than 60 per cent of sewage generated by urban India is untreated and enters water bodies like rivers, resulting in pollution and making it unfit for human consumption, the National Green Tribunal has said. The green panel said it is a matter of serious concern that compliance of environment norms is not satisfactory and results in large scale deaths and diseases and serious damage to air, water and earth. The observations were made by the tribunal on Monday while hearing a plea filed by V Manickam, alleging pollution of Thirumanimuthar river in Tamil Nadu due to discharge of effluents by the industries and release of municipal sewage. The tribunal directed Salem Municipal Corporation to deposit interim compensation of Rs 25 lakh with the Central Pollution Control Board within a month for the damage already caused to the environment. Woman commits suicide, twin baby girls survive

In an alleged suicide attempt, the body of a 23-year-old woman was found hanging at her rented house here but her twin baby girls, aged two and half years, were saved in the nick of time following intervention of local people, police said Tuesday. Though the woman died, the children, who were allegedly hanged by her before she hanged herself from the same rope, survived as they could be taken to hospital in time, they said. The deceased has been identified as Baby, belonging to Hosanagar in Shivamogga district, police said The family had shifted to Ujire near here two years ago and the womans husband was working in a salon. Ex-Cong district functionary in Kerala accused of raping tribal girl surrenders

A former Congress district functionary, booked for allegedly raping a 17-year-old tribal girl for nearly a year, surrendered before police on Tuesday, an official said. The ex-Congress committee general secretary of Wayanad district O M George, who was absconding, surrendered before police Tuesday noon and he was arrested, the official said. On the complaint of the girl's parents a case was registered against him under IPC Section 376 (rape), the SC/ST Act and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Delhi HC seeks ED's response on Talwar's plea challenging deportation from UAE

The Delhi High Court Tuesday sought ED's response on a plea by alleged lobbyist Deepak Talwar challenging his detention by Indian agencies after he was deported from the UAE last week in connection with a money laundering case. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has alleged that Talwar, who is in its custody, acted as middleman in negotiations to favour foreign private airlines causing the loss to national carrier Air India. A bench of Justices Siddharth Mridul and Sangita Dhingra Sehgal issued notice to the ED and directed it to file a response to the petition by February 11. The court listed the matter for further hearing on February 12. 74-year-old man, suffering from depression, commits suicide by shooting himself at Delhi home

A man in his seventies, who was suffering from depression, allegedly committed suicide on Tuesday by shooting himself at his home in southeast Delhi's Sundar Nagar area, police said. The man, identified as Yadav Nath Bhargava (74), was suffering from hard cough problem for the last six years and was in depression because of his illness, police said. Police officials, who found Bhargava's body lying in a pool of blood in his bathroom, have ruled out any foul play as of now. Hazrat Nizamuddin police station was informed regarding a suicide around 9 am. Initial investigations revealed that about 8.15 am, the victim's wife, Mamata Bhargava, heard a loud bang. Malegaon case: Bombay HC asks NIA if it sought permission to truncate documents

The Bombay High Court on Tuesday asked the National Investigation Agency (NIA) if it had sought permission to truncate the documents and witnesses' statements that were part of the 2008 Malegaon blast case charge sheet. A division bench of Justices A S Oka and Ajey Gadkari was hearing an application filed by one of the accused, Lt Col Prasad Purohit, seeking non-truncated copies of the documents and statements of witnesses. Purohit had earlier filed the application in the high court challenging the applicability of provisions of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) in the case. His advocate, Shrikant Shivade, told the court on Tuesday that when the first probe agency, the state Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS), filed its charge sheet in the case, several documents and witnesses' statements were truncated or masked. MP Police invoke NSA against 3 accused of cow slaughter

The National Security Act (NSA) was on Tuesday invoked against three persons accused of illegal cow slaughter in the communally sensitive Khandwa region, said the police."Police got the information three days earlier that some people are involved in cow slaughter near Moghat. When the police arrived, the accused ran away from the spot. But we found the cow carcass," SP Siddharth Bahuguna said.The incident took place on Friday in Khandwa. 'Hardcore criminal' detained under PSA in J-K's Samba

A "hardcore criminal" was detained under the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA) in Jammu and Kashmir's Samba district, police said Tuesday. Mohammad Irshad alias Shadu, a resident of Bari Brahmana, is named in nine FIRs registered between 2010 and 2018 in various police station and the charges against him include attempt to murder, rape and house-trespassing, a police spokesman said. He said the district magistrate, Samba, issued the warrant of his detention under the PSA recently, and accordingly a special police team managed to nab him from the Bari Brahmana area. The Pune Police told the Bombay High Court on Tuesday that it will not arrest activist Anand Teltumbde till February 12 midnight, even as the Dalit scholar termed the case a ploy to "humiliate" and "harass" him. The statement was made by the state's counsel Aruna Pai on behalf of the Pune Police before a bench of Justice N W Sambre. NGT slaps Rs 25 lk fine on UP govt for failing to stop dirty water discharge into Ganga Canal

Dumping of sewage in water bodies is an offence, the National Green Tribunal said Tuesday while slapping a penalty of Rs 25 lakh on the Uttar Pradesh government for its failure to stop discharge of dirty water into Upper Ganga canal. A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel said adequate steps have not been taken for proper waste management and its treatment. The green panel said that clean environment is a fundamental right and the apathy by the authorities has to be dealt with coercive action. It noted the submission of the state government that a sewage treatment plant at Niwari will be completed within six months and asked the urban development ministry to give an undertaking with a performance guarantee of 35 lakh.
